Chapter 89: Kaer Morhen Arrival
The fortress emerged from mountain mist like a promise kept.
Kaer Morhen's restored walls rose against the autumn sky—stone that had stood for centuries, repaired through the guild investment I'd negotiated three years ago. The eastern section that had been crumbling during my first visit now stood solid, battlements restored, gates functional.
"It's beautiful," Ciri breathed, her first genuine expression of wonder since we'd begun traveling. "I didn't expect it to be beautiful."
"It's old," Geralt said. "And cold. And drafty. But safe."
"The restoration has progressed well," I observed, Resource Scanner confirming structural improvements that matched my investment. "The walls are defensible now. They weren't when I first visited."
"Your guild's money at work." Geralt's tone was neutral—acknowledging the contribution without expressing gratitude. "Vesemir will be pleased to see the results holding up."
The gates opened as we approached, figures emerging to greet our arrival. Vesemir led—the ancient Witcher's face showing something like relief beneath its weathered composure. Behind him, Eskel and Lambert watched with the professional attention of men evaluating potential threats.
"Geralt. And the child surprise." Vesemir's voice carried warmth that Witchers rarely displayed. "We've been expecting you since we heard about Cintra."
"I would have been here sooner. Got delayed tracking her down after the city fell." Geralt dismounted, guiding Ciri forward. "This is Cirilla. Ciri. My—"
"Your destiny," Vesemir finished. "I remember. The Law of Surprise." His eyes moved to me. "And the guild master who apparently reached her first."
"I had intelligence advantages." I dismounted, offering the formal nod of greeting that our alliance protocols specified. "The rescue was coordinated with my team. We transferred protection to Geralt as soon as he arrived."
"Transferred." Vesemir's expression held knowing skepticism. "I'm sure that was a smooth process."
"It was functional. That's what mattered."
Lambert appeared beside us, his customary sardonic edge present despite the serious circumstances. "The kid who buys Witcher schools is now collecting princesses. What's next—building a kingdom?"
"Just protecting someone who needed protection." I refused to rise to his baiting. "The guild's resources supplemented what the Witchers provide. Cooperation rather than competition."
"Very diplomatic."
"I've had practice."
The fortress interior was warm despite autumn chill—fires burning in the great hall, the restored structure holding heat better than the drafty ruin I'd first encountered.
Vesemir, Geralt, and I gathered in the planning room while Ciri settled into quarters that Eskel had prepared. The security discussion required coordination that couldn't happen with her present.
"She stays in the interior keep," Geralt said, indicating positions on the fortress schematic. "Multiple exits, reinforced walls, sight lines to the main gate."
"Witcher protection as primary layer," Vesemir added. "Between the four of us, someone is always within response distance. Combat capability is not a concern."
"The guild provides support infrastructure." I traced logistics routes on the map. "Supply deliveries via teleportation—I can bring provisions directly, avoiding road-based transport that could be tracked. Intelligence about external threats, early warning if Nilfgaard extends search this far north."
"You think they will?"
"Eventually. Ciri is valuable enough that they won't stop searching until they're certain she's dead or captured." I met Geralt's eyes. "The prophecies surrounding her—White Flame, Elder Blood—Nilfgaard knows at least some of what she represents. They'll keep hunting."
"Then we keep hiding her."
"And training her." I pulled out documents I'd prepared during the journey. "Ciri asked to learn from both of you and from me. Combat training from Witchers, strategic thinking from guild methods. The combination makes her more capable of surviving whatever comes next."
"You want to train her?"
"I want her to be prepared for threats you can't protect her from. Combat skill matters, but so does understanding how enemies think, how organizations operate, how to recognize danger before it becomes immediate."
Vesemir considered this with the patience of someone who'd taught generations of Witcher trainees.
"The girl has potential. I've seen it already—sharp, focused, hungry to learn." He nodded slowly. "Diverse training serves her better than narrow focus. If Geralt agrees..."
"I agree she should learn everything useful." Geralt's voice carried reluctance beneath the acceptance. "Including whatever you can teach her that we can't."
"Then we coordinate. Witcher training as foundation, guild methods as supplement. She decides what she wants to pursue as she develops."
The arrangement was formalized without ceremony—three organizations cooperating to protect and train one fourteen-year-old girl. The complexity of the alliance would have seemed impossible three years ago, when I'd started with nothing except determination and impossible knowledge.
Mira found me in the restored library, reviewing reports while the others settled into fortress accommodations.
"The team is ready to return to regular operations," she said. "Marcus and Kell want to check on their families in Redania—the war has everyone worried about relatives."
"Approved. They've earned rest time." I set down the intelligence summary I'd been studying. "You're asking something else."
"I'm asking if you're staying here. At Kaer Morhen."
"No. I need to return to continental operations. The war isn't over because Ciri is safe—there are thousands of refugees who need help, dozens of operations requiring coordination." I stood, moving to the window that overlooked the fortress courtyard. "But I'll visit regularly. The teleportation grid makes it possible."
"You care about her. Personally." The observation wasn't accusation—just statement of something she'd concluded through years of watching me.
"She's important. Strategically and personally." I didn't deny what couldn't be denied. "I've invested years in preparing for her survival. Seeing her safe feels like... accomplishment. Completion of something I started before I fully understood what I was starting."
"And Geralt? He's protective in ways that look like more than duty."
"He's bound to her through destiny. The Law of Surprise connected them before she was born. What he feels for her is complicated—responsibility, connection, something like parental concern developing as they spend time together."
"Complicated dynamics. You, Geralt, Ciri. The triangle is obvious."
"It's not—" I stopped, recognizing that denial would be dishonest. "It's not romantic. She's fourteen, and I'm not... that's not what this is. But caring? Connection? Wanting to be part of her future? Yes. Those exist."
"Just be careful. Princesses have complicated lives. People who care about them get caught in complications."
"I've been caught in complications since I founded this guild. One more won't kill me."
The dark humor earned a slight smile from Mira—acknowledgment of the absurdity that had defined my existence since arriving in this world.
Before leaving, I found Ciri in her new quarters.
The room was small but comfortable—stone walls hung with tapestries that provided warmth, a bed with actual mattress rather than travel bedrolls, a window overlooking the training courtyard. She was unpacking the few possessions she'd carried through the flight from Cintra.
"You're leaving." Statement rather than question—she'd noticed my preparations.
"The guild needs coordination. The war creates demands that don't stop because you're safe." I reached into my inventory, producing items I'd prepared for this moment. "But I wanted to give you these before I go."
The emergency beacon was first—improved design, better range, more reliable activation. "Better than the original. If you need me—for any reason—break it and I'll know where you are."
She accepted the beacon with solemn attention, understanding its significance.
The skill books followed—two Rare-tier combat manuals that had cost two thousand GP I couldn't easily spare.
[ITEMS PROVIDED:]
[- Advanced Emergency Beacon (500 GP)]
[- Blade Mastery Manual - Rare Tier (1,000 GP)]
[- Tactical Awareness Manual - Rare Tier (1,000 GP)]
[GP Balance: 150 (severely depleted)]
"These will help your training. The combat manual complements what Geralt teaches. The tactical awareness... that's what I mentioned before. Pattern recognition, threat assessment, strategic thinking."
"You're giving me more gifts."
"I'm investing in your capability. Different framing, same result." I smiled slightly. "Keep learning. Stay alive. I'll visit when I can."
She hugged me—unexpected, the first time she'd initiated physical contact since the nekker attack. The embrace was genuine affection, not just gratitude.
"Thank you. For everything."
"Thank yourself. You survived when survival was nearly impossible. I just helped at the end."
She released me, stepping back with expression that mixed sadness at parting with determination that had characterized her since I'd first met her.
"Come back soon."
"As often as I can."
Geralt stood in the corridor outside her door, watching the interaction with expression I couldn't fully interpret. The complexity of his feelings was visible—gratitude for the rescue, resentment of my involvement, uncertainty about what my relationship with Ciri meant for his own role.
I nodded to him as I passed—acknowledgment without challenge, respect without submission.
"Take care of her."
"I always will."
"I know. That's why I'm comfortable leaving."
