Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

If you can't figure it out, stop forcing it.

Rimo leaned back against the wall and let his thoughts settle.

Anyway, one thing was certain.

Unlike Kurapika, whose Emperor Time consumes one hour of lifespan per second of activation, or Gon, who sacrificed all of his future potential in his rage against Neferpitou, Rimo would never face the problem of "running out" of vitality.

So in theory, staking life force should not be dangerous for him.

He began summarizing the known examples of Conditions and Oaths.

First, Kurapika.

Second, Gon Freecss.

Looking at both cases, it was not difficult to identify a common denominator.

Overwhelming emotion.

Kurapika's hatred toward the Phantom Troupe, born from the massacre of the Kurta Clan.

Gon's fury and despair after confirming Kite's death at the hands of Pitou.

Those emotions were not momentary impulses.

They had fermented over time.

Kurapika's rage existed from the moment he saw the scarlet eyes of his people sold like merchandise.

Gon's resentment began the instant he realized his own helplessness in front of Pitou's overwhelming aura.

When the emotional pressure reached its peak, the vow became real.

Kurapika gained Chain Jail, which forces targets into Zetsu if they are members of the Phantom Troupe.

He also gained Emperor Time, allowing 100 percent efficiency across all Nen categories while his Scarlet Eyes are active.

Gon, in a single terrifying surge, gained power that rivaled a Royal Guard.

Even if it appeared instantaneous, that transformation was built on accumulated emotion.

Then there was Franklin Bordeau.

It was never explicitly stated that he used a Condition and Oath for his Double Machine Gun ability.

But the fact that he severed his own fingertips to enhance the power and stability of his Nen bullets strongly implied a self-imposed restriction.

He sacrificed part of his body in exchange for greater destructive output.

No hatred.

But a clear pursuit of power.

And finally, Chairman Isaac Netero.

The Poor Man's Rose implanted in his body detonated upon his death during the battle with Meruem.

While not a Nen vow in the strictest sense, it embodied the same principle.

Resolve.

Sacrifice.

No hesitation.

Combining these examples, Rimo gradually formed a conclusion.

There were two primary emotional catalysts.

The pursuit of power.

Or extreme hatred toward a specific target.

Hatred tends to create highly specialized, even "bug-like" abilities against that target.

Pure pursuit of strength tends to produce self-amplifying power at a cost.

Kurapika's Chain Jail only works on the Phantom Troupe.

Gon's transformation targeted Pitou.

Franklin's sacrifice enhanced raw output without specificity.

In Rimo's case, there was no specific enemy.

No singular object of hatred.

Therefore, his path could only be the pursuit of power.

But whether hatred or ambition, one prerequisite remained constant.

Intense emotion.

"…So that's the missing piece."

He finally understood.

No matter how many times he swore before, nothing happened because he felt no genuine dissatisfaction.

Deep down, he was extremely satisfied with Unlimited Spell.

In fact, he was proud of it.

He thought it was brilliant.

And Nen responds to conviction.

Consider Shizuku Murasaki and her vacuum Blinky.

According to her explanation, Blinky can only suck up inanimate objects.

Yet scientifically speaking, blood contains living cells.

Toxins are composed of organic compounds.

But if Shizuku defines something as "non-living," then for her ability, it becomes so.

Nen obeys the user's perception.

Rimo's problem was similar.

If he subconsciously believed that Unlimited Spell was already excellent and that life-cost was trivial, then the vow had no weight.

There was no true risk.

No emotional trigger.

No amplification.

Sometimes he was genuinely grateful that he had studied psychology.

All of his abilities were intertwined with self-perception.

If he did not understand self-suggestion and emotional construction, his growth would stagnate.

He closed his eyes.

And began to build.

He searched for frustration.

Powerlessness.

Areas where he had failed repeatedly.

Slowly, he linked those emotions to his current limitation.

The inability to expand Unlimited Spell beyond a meter without exponential aura drain.

The gap between conceptual perfection and practical restriction.

He magnified that dissatisfaction.

He sharpened it.

Until it felt real.

Until it stung.

Then, with absolute focus, he spoke inwardly.

"I, Rimo, swear upon my life. From this moment forward, whenever I use Unlimited Spell, it will consume my life force. The stronger the effect, the greater the life consumed. I accept this without exception."

Hum—

A subtle vibration spread through his entire body.

Not external.

Internal.

His aura shifted.

Compressed.

Then stabilized.

Rimo instinctively understood.

Something had changed.

A thought moved.

Nen — Unlimited Spell.

Activated.

Previously, the spatial distortion barely extended a palm's width.

Now, the distortion expanded outward and enveloped his entire body.

The compressed space in front of him stretched far beyond one meter.

And more importantly, it felt stable.

Extendable.

He sensed that if necessary, he could widen it further without the previous exponential instability.

As for vitality consumption?

He felt nothing.

With endless life force, even massive expenditure registered as negligible.

"Success."

A flicker of satisfaction crossed his eyes.

He had anticipated this outcome after analyzing the emotional trigger requirement.

Still, seeing the result firsthand was gratifying.

"Ugh…"

He stretched lazily and collapsed backward onto the bed.

Physically, he was not tired.

But the emotional excavation, analysis, and self-hypnosis had drained him mentally.

"Just a short rest…"

He closed his eyes.

Sleep came instantly.

He did not know how much time passed.

When he awoke, he glanced at the clock on the bedside table.

15:23.

He sat up and stretched.

The previous mental fatigue had vanished.

Sleep truly was the simplest reset.

Creak—

As he opened the door, he saw Uvogin sitting against the wall beside it.

The large Enhancer sprang up immediately.

"Rimo! You're out!"

"Uvogin? What are you doing here?" Rimo asked in mild surprise.

Uvogin scratched his head.

"My shift."

Rimo instantly understood.

To ensure no interruption during his vow formulation, they must have arranged rotations guarding his door.

His chest warmed slightly.

They had taken his words seriously.

Uvogin's shout echoed down the hall.

Moments later, footsteps approached at high speed.

Machi Komacine and Nobunaga Hazama arrived almost simultaneously, clearly having rushed over the moment they heard his voice.
