Chapter 177 - Chapter 177: Chronal Shift

After some thought, Anser decided to multiclass into a Wizard.

A psion's spellcasting ability was far inferior to that of a Wizard, and even its most distinctive psionic powers could be obtained through other means—such as the Fighter subclass Psi Warrior, the Rogue subclass Soulknife, or certain Feats.

Jack of all trades was inferior to specializing in spellcasting.

Wizard and Sorcerer magic shared a common foundation. In terms of spellcasting, they could reference and complement each other, greatly improving his casting techniques.

Anser didn't consider himself a top student, nor did he think he had the perseverance for deep research. But with the help of the dice, he could "learn" and master two spells per level, including their theoretical knowledge. This ensured his baseline—at the very least, he wouldn't be incompetent.

Even if he were a bit lazy, it wouldn't matter. The future was long; with steady accumulation, he wouldn't fall behind.

'I just so happen to have a Wizard Tower, and I also happen to possess a Legendary-grade spellbook…' Even he felt it was a bit too coincidental, but not choosing Wizard would be a waste of resources.

'Could it be that the Great Reader foresaw that I would multiclass into Wizard?'

However, his way of multiclassing was different from that of ordinary adventurers.

What truly made him change his mind was time magic. It could manipulate time, rewriting the flow of reality according to one's will.

At level 14, one could grasp the ability "Converging Future": seeing through all possible futures and guiding one of them to manifest in surrounding events, ensuring outcomes unfold as desired.

Divination saw omens—but time magic could turn one possibility into reality.

Anser didn't know the full extent of time magic's capabilities, but he was willing to gamble. It had to be better than the psion's enhanced telekinesis, teleportation, and confusion effects.

He summoned the dice, tapped the vague humanoid silhouette representing Multiclass, and selected Wizard from the ring of class phantoms.

In the next instant, all the images vanished.

His mind trembled, and in a daze, he felt as though he had returned to his youth—studying arcane knowledge in a vaguely familiar Wizard Tower.

The mentor had many students and wasn't particularly attentive, but who cared? He was a genius—he learned everything at a glance.

Meditation, sensing magic and the Weave, guiding and gathering magical energy, preparing spells, copying scrolls, foundational spell models, arcane formations…

He gradually came to understand Wizards as a group. Being a Wizard was not synonymous with being a scholar. As long as one met the Intelligence requirement and was willing to learn, one could become a Wizard.

They varied widely in personality—some obsessed over theoretical foundations, others pursued lost civilizations, some loved combat and adventure, and others simply sought magical power.

He didn't know how much time had passed before Anser suddenly awakened.

...

Arcane Recovery: By studying your spellbook, you can restore magical energy.

After a short rest, you recover some expended magic, up to half your total capacity. Once per day.

...

'It feels like I just lived through a brief simulated life,' he sighed.

In that dream, he had chosen exactly these spells—especially Find Familiar, which he had long desired.

None of these spells were offensive, but all were highly practical.

True Strike was a Divination cantrip. After casting it, he would gain a momentary magical insight, allowing him to make a weapon attack using his spellcasting ability for both the Attack Roll and Damage Roll. On a hit, he could convert the damage into radiant damage.

This could compensate for his lack of Strength, ensuring he wouldn't miss in close combat.

Comprehend Languages was a 1st-level Divination spell, allowing the caster to understand the literal meaning of spoken or written language for one hour—essential for travel.

Mage Armor was also a 1st-level abjuration spell. It required no concentration and granted a magical armor to an unarmored creature, increasing Armor Class by +3 for 8 hours.

Find Familiar allowed him to summon a familiar of celestial, fey, or fiend type. It shared a telepathic link with its master, could assist in combat and scouting, and could be dismissed into a pocket dimension when needed.

Tenser's Floating Disk created a disk-shaped horizontal force field that floated three feet above the ground and followed the caster—mainly used for carrying items.

Anser opened his Wizard character sheet, rapidly selected class options, chose the Time Magic subclass, and watched as experience points drained from his pool like flowing water.

...

[Level Up: Wizard Level 4!]

[You gain new class feature: Scholar]

[You gain Time Magic features: Chronal Shift, Temporal Awareness]

[You gain two new Feats. You can learn six new spells, three Evocation spells, and one cantrip.]

...

'So many spells!'

A Wizard learned two spells per level. At level 3, that meant six spells—two 1st-level and four 2nd-level—offering a wide range of choices.

Spells varied in difficulty, form, and function. Spell level did not determine everything. There were no useless spells—only incompetent spellcasters.

Anser first reviewed his class features.

Scholar: In addition to learning spells, you have studied an academic field. Choose one skill: Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion. You gain expertise in that skill.

He didn't hesitate and chose Arcana.

Arcana represented a caster's knowledge of spells, magical items, and planar lore, tied to Intelligence and widely applicable.

Next came the two powerful Time Magic features.

Chronal Shift: You gain partial insight into the mysteries of time and can use predictable arcane energy to exert limited control over the flow of time around a creature—including acceleration, deceleration, stasis, and rewind—twice per day.

For example, when a target makes an Attack Roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can interfere with the time flow around them, affecting their reaction and action.

This feature was extremely powerful—borderline broken.

Imagine in the heat of battle: an enemy narrowly dodges a fatal blow, only for time to rewind by a fraction of a second. Such a situation would be nearly impossible to react to.

The same applied to spells—forcing an enemy to make a saving throw again. It wasn't a matter of whether they could resist; it was something completely beyond expectation. Both mind and body would be unprepared.

However, Chronal Shift had a very small range and limited control over time. At the beginning, it could only rewind by a fraction of a second.

Temporal Awareness: You possess a sensitivity to time far beyond ordinary people, granting perception that transcends the current timeline.

Your initiative rolls gain a bonus equal to your Intelligence modifier, currently +5.

This was a passive ability, akin to instant precognition. In combat, he would always act first, and it was also effective against ambushes.

The essence: striking first!

'Controlling time… what kind of feeling would that be?' Anser imagined.

This was only the beginning. As his Wizard level increased, time magic would grow stronger, eventually revealing extraordinary power in the hands of a high-level Wizard.
