Chapter 31 - Chapter 29: The Misunderstanding II

I was in the yard trying not to be part of the drama when Phil appeared beside me with an expression of misguided determination.

"Leo," he said quietly. "I need you."

"For what?"

"To help fix this. Gloria's locked in her room. Claire's in the kitchen crying. Jay's in the living room pretending he doesn't care. And I..." He paused. "I'm the only one who can talk to both of them. But I need someone to watch my back."

"Watch your back?"

"I need you to come with me in case Gloria gets violent. I've seen her kick down a door before."

I didn't know whether to laugh or be worried, but before I could respond, Phil was already dragging me toward the house.

We climbed the stairs in silence. On the second floor, Jay was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, with an expression of defeat.

"She doesn't want to talk to anyone," he said.

"She'll talk to me," Phil replied with a confidence his eyes didn't reflect.

He knocked on the door. "Gloria? It's Phil. Can I come in?"

From inside, silence.

"Gloria, please. I just want to talk."

Silence. And then, the door opened.

Gloria stood in the doorway, arms crossed, with an expression of pure contained fury. Her eyes were red, but there were no tears. Only fire.

"What do you want?" she asked, her voice sharp.

"I want to help you," Phil said. "Claire feels terrible. She knows she was wrong. She wants to apologize."

"Apologize?" Gloria let out a bitter laugh. "After a year of calling me a gold digger behind my back. You think an 'I'm sorry' fixes that?"

"That's why I'm here. To listen. To have you tell me what needs to happen for you to forgive her."

Gloria looked at him. She looked at him for a long time. And then, with a movement I didn't expect, she opened the door fully.

"Come in," she said, gesturing into the room.

Phil entered. I hesitated for a second, but he signaled for me to follow.

Gloria's room was an oasis of order in the midst of the house's chaos. Clothes carefully hung in the closet, shoes lined up in perfect rows, a photo of her and Jay on the nightstand. And on the floor, right in front of the bed, a portable drying rack full of colorful lingerie.

Gloria sat on the edge of the bed, arms crossed. Phil stood in front of her, hands in his pockets, trying to find the words.

"Look," he said finally. "I don't know what it feels like to be called a gold digger. But I know what it feels like when Claire's family doesn't accept you. When Jay first looked at me, he didn't say 'welcome to the family.' He asked me how much I made. He asked me if I thought I could support his daughter in the lifestyle she was used to. If I was up to it."

Gloria looked at him for a second, her fury seeming to waver.

"And what did you do?" she asked.

"I proved I was. For sixteen years. Every day. Until finally, a few weeks ago, he told me he liked me." Phil smiled. "It took sixteen years. But I did it."

"I don't want to wait sixteen years," Gloria said, her voice breaking. "I want them to accept me now. To love me now. Not to think I'm with Jay for his money."

"And they will accept you," Phil said. "Claire already accepts you. She just doesn't know how to say it. She doesn't know how to apologize."

"Then let her jump in the pool," Gloria said, with a flash of her old fire. "With her clothes on, in front of everyone. Then I'll know she's really sorry."

Phil looked at her. And then, without a word, he took a step back.

And tripped over the drying rack.

It was in slow motion. His feet tangled in the sheets, his body tilted backward, his arms spun in the air like a juggler who'd lost control. I tried to grab him, but he pulled me with him, and the two of us fell to the floor in a whirlwind of soft fabric and bright colors.

For a moment, everything was confusion. The world became a whirlwind of lace and silk. A pair of pink panties landed on my head like an absurd cap. A electric blue bra hung from Phil's shoulder like a haute couture shoulder pad. And on the floor between us, a pair of black lace panties had gotten tangled in the robotic arm I had, for some reason, brought with me.

The silence was total.

Gloria looked at us from the bed, eyes wide. Phil and I looked at each other from the floor, covered in lingerie, not knowing what to say.

And then Gloria laughed.

It wasn't a kind laugh. It wasn't an understanding laugh. It was a laugh that came from deep within her, that made her double over, that made her clutch her stomach as she pointed at our absurd figures.

"Look," she said between laughs. "Look at yourselves. You look like two clowns in a lingerie store."

Phil sat up, the blue bra still hanging from his shoulder. "This isn't funny," he said, but he was already smiling.

"Yes, it is," Gloria said, wiping away tears of laughter. "It's very funny. And you two are idiots."

"We're idiots," Phil admitted. "But we're idiots who want to help you."

Gloria looked at him. She looked at him, and then she looked at me, with the robotic arm still in my hand and the black panties tangled in its gripper.

"What is that?" she asked, pointing at the arm.

"A robotics project," I replied, feeling my cheeks burn. "I was fixing it."

"Fixing it?" Gloria took the arm, examined it with curiosity. "And what's it for?"

"To learn. To understand how things work. And... to build."

Gloria nodded with an expression I couldn't tell was approval or surprise. "My father also fixed things," she said. "In the village, he was the only one who knew how to repair radios. People came from everywhere for him to fix their appliances. And he always said that fixing things was like fixing people. That you had to understand how they worked first, before you could repair them."

Phil and I fell silent. Gloria set the arm on the bed beside the photo of her and Jay.

"Claire isn't bad," she said, her voice softer. "She's just afraid of her father getting hurt again. Afraid I won't be enough for him. Afraid her family will break."

"And you," Phil said. "What do you want?"
