Yan Feifan's main role in the guinea pig's phalloplasty was to graft the nerves and blood vessels and fill in the muscle tissue.
The remaining portion of the guinea pig's original penis would be detached and transplanted to the very tip, serving as the enlarged and highly sensitive head of the reconstructed penis.
Yan Feifan was primarily responsible for creating the extended section, which involved filling it with and connecting the necessary tissues.
First was the extension of the urethra.
An adult male's urethra is about twenty centimeters long and is quite elastic.
Four to five centimeters of the guinea pig's urethra had been removed, but the remaining part could be stretched and treated, making it just barely long enough.
This part of the job was relatively simple.
However, the nerves and blood vessels couldn't be stretched seven or eight centimeters. Instead, suitable nerves and vessels had to be harvested from other parts of the guinea pig's body for grafting.
