Naomi briefly explained the mission and learned that Six was a fourth-grader at this very Hope Primary School.
The school cafeteria had designated seats. Six said there were two empty spots next to her and limped ahead, leading Naomi and her group forward.
Lunch was simple but nutritionally considered for the children: an eggplant dish with a few shreds of pork and a hard-boiled egg. The rice and congee were self-serve. If that wasn't enough, they could go to the front and ask the cafeteria ladies for another bowl, with a limit of three bowls total.
Naomi had just finished peeling an egg for Ian when she heard Six say she was already full.
Six's tray was spotless. She tucked the egg into her pocket as if it were a precious treasure, murmuring, "I'll save this for Mom..."
Naomi passed her own untouched egg over. "Here, take this one, too."
Six shook her head. "I can't. You need your nutrients too, Fairy Sister."
