The villager instantly grew tense. Like a startled rabbit, he immediately looked around in a panic.
He saw that, for the moment, no one else in the village had noticed the situation here.
So he hurriedly backed away, preparing to shut the door.
He wanted to keep these uninvited guests out, as if simply closing the door could keep the danger outside.
Just then, a blood-curdling scream, sharp as a dagger,
tore through the night sky from the other side of the village.
It sounded especially abrupt and terrifying in the silent night.
The sound was like the roar of a demon from the depths of Hell,
filled with pain, despair, and terror.
Caught completely off guard, the young men and women all flinched at the sudden scream.
Some of the more timid girls even let out a shriek of their own,
their cries echoing in the night sky and sparking even more panic.
