Aiden Shaw got out of the car, opened an umbrella, and walked around to open the passenger door, taking Laura Lowell's hand as she stepped out.
"The ground's slippery. Be careful."
They had only taken a few steps when they saw Hannah Hale get out of her car. "What took you so long?"
Hannah Hale had messaged Laura Lowell twenty minutes earlier, asking when she would arrive. She'd been waiting in her car so long she was about to fall asleep.
"I rushed over as soon as my engagement was finished. Why didn't you go on in?"
Laura Lowell gathered the hem of her dress, shivering slightly in the cold.
"I hate mingling. I'd rather sit in the car and get some rest."
In the dim light, Hannah Hale's lowered lashes perfectly concealed the complex expression in her eyes.
Aiden Shaw pulled the trembling Laura Lowell tightly into his embrace, his steps quickening involuntarily.
