He had really gone to great lengths just to get Mr. Joyce and Hannah Hale some time alone together.

Hannah Hale looked at Morgan Joyce, whose face was still pale, and nodded helplessly. "This won't do. I'd better take tomorrow off. I just have a feeling you'll do a terrible job taking care of him."
Before Morgan Joyce could say a word, Mr. Lorell jumped in. "Oh, thank you so, so much, Dr. Hale! I'm so clumsy and inexperienced, I was honestly worried I wouldn't be able to take proper care of Mr. Joyce. This is wonderful. Thank you, a million times, thank you."
The more Laura Lowell watched Morgan Joyce's assistant, the more she thought, 'He's such a slick operator... no, he's a total drama queen.'
