Vera Xavier's indifferent expression infuriated Wesley Kane. He took a deep breath and said, "Vera Xavier, don't forget you're my wife. How dare you speak to me like that!"
Vera Xavier thought his memory must be terrible. She felt it was necessary to remind him, "Mr. Kane, have you forgotten? Our wedding was canceled, and we never got a marriage license."
"That doesn't change the fact that you're my wife!" Wesley Kane declared, full of self-righteous indignation. "As long as you obediently come home with me right now, I'm willing to overlook the fact that you ran out on our wedding day."
After he spoke, he lifted his chin slightly, as if his willingness to not hold a grudge was some great act of charity on his part.
Vera Xavier was almost impressed by his convoluted logic. She said coolly, "Is that so? Well then, I'd rather you hold it against me, because there's no way I'm going home with you."
