Shane Caldwell stood there, holding a bottle of water, at a loss for words. After all, he had just admitted he was there to see the rainbow. Anything else he said now would seem strange.
He couldn't help but call out, "Vera!"
Vera turned to look at him, her gaze pure and clear. "Yes?"
Shane had wanted to comfort her. After all, what had happened to her family was a major ordeal, one that someone less strong-willed might not be able to handle. But aside from the faint dark circles under her eyes, she acted as if nothing was wrong.
But he'd been coddled his whole life and was terrible at comforting people. The words that tumbled out were: "I'm going to score better than you on the college entrance exam. If you don't get into Veridia University, don't say it's because I picked on you!"
Vera gave him a smile. "Mr. President, you really should do something about that narcissistic streak. Be careful, or you might end up eating your own words."
With that, she turned and walked away.
