Vera Xavier recalled that if Susan Caldwell hadn't screamed, Aaron Cheney wouldn't have been knocked out, and her own life wouldn't have been hanging by a thread. 'There's no way I'm letting this go! This score has to be settled, here and now!'

Susan Caldwell's eyes darkened at her words. She cursed Vera Xavier in her heart. 'What a damn shame. Even that wasn't enough to kill her. But it's fine. I have other tricks up my sleeve.'
Susan Caldwell glanced at the pile of stones out of the corner of her eye, her hand unconsciously clenching into a fist.
The sudden intrusion of the robbers had cut their bet short. Now, looking at Vera Xavier's expression, it was obvious she intended to settle the score.
