But Vera Xavier sniffled and said, "What about me?"
She looked up at him after she spoke, her bright eyes brimming with indignation. "You're a terrible boyfriend! You didn't even take me to register for school! You have no idea—because you weren't there, I almost got bullied today!"
"Who would dare bully you?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.
Vera Xavier pouted. "Susan Caldwell, of course! You should have seen it today. She actually teamed up with Wesley Kane to come after me!"
"What happened?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.
Vera Xavier immediately recounted the whole story of how Wesley Kane had come to cause trouble for her. At the end, the corners of her lips tilted up, and she said with a sly look, "Luckily, I'm quick-witted. I managed to defuse the situation by pretending we were just running lines for a play. Otherwise, my reputation would have been completely ruined today!"
