Vera Xavier took one look at Susan Caldwell and knew she'd managed to sweep the matter concerning Trellis under the rug again. Vera had to admit, she was actually quite impressed by Susan's ability in this regard—to be able to say such things against her conscience at a time like this.
But this was the first time Vera and Winter Sullivan had met, so there was no need to say too much. After all, they were still strangers, and saying more would only be counterproductive. It was better to stop after making her point. Besides, she was in Veridia now; there would be plenty of opportunities later.
Scaring her a little today was enough.

Though she didn't finish her sentence, Susan Caldwell could read her meaning: 'Whether this is over, and how it will end, isn't your call to make. It's mine.'
