Beckett Nathan stated decisively, "You're my wife. Who would dare to bully you?"
Brooke Mitchell found his words pleasing enough, but then Beckett Nathan added, "But you have to trust Nathaniel's judgment, too! That kid has always had a good eye for people."
"That's not exactly true," Brooke Mitchell said. After thinking hard, she finally managed to come up with a flimsy reason: "This situation is different. Women are the best at deception, and the prettier they are, the better they are at it. Nathaniel has hardly spent any time with girls before, so how could he possibly tell the difference!"
"Nathaniel's all grown up. We haven't taught him that much, so what hasn't he learned on his own?" Beckett Nathan consoled her. "He's an adult now; he knows what he's doing. Don't be so anxious. We'll have him bring the girl over later. If she's really no good, I won't approve of her joining our family either."
