"Why is Ms. Spann learning to speak like a foreigner? Does she want to go to a foreign country?" Nan Thorne asked innocently.

But she told everyone that her father, Vernon Spann, had been her first English tutor, and that she was self-taught from then on. She claimed the same for her other subjects, like math and literature, never once mentioning Old Master Tate.
