Howard was a little surprised, but he had come today to confess something important to Ashley Bowen.
He'd been building up to this for a long time. He lowered his gaze.
He said nothing, and the atmosphere in the room instantly grew awkward. Ashley Bowen sat as still as a wooden doll. They weren't far from each other, just sitting there in silence.

"Mm, go ahead," Ashley Bowen said, blinking. Her fan-like lashes cast a shadow, obscuring what little light reached her eyes.
The lights were off, so the room was lit only by the faint glow of the moon. The environment, paradoxically, made Howard feel more at ease.
