"Alright, you two have a seat outside. It'll be ready in a jiffy," the owner said with a hospitable smile, then turned and got to work.
Ten minutes later, a steaming, fragrant bowl of rice noodles was brought over. The owner had also brought two small bowls and even threw in a couple of extra eggs for them.
"These are from our own hens. Give them a try. They're on the house."
"Thank you, sir. You're too kind." Joan Shaw smiled as she took the two eggs, nodding repeatedly.
The owner glanced at them, gave a small smile, and walked away.
One large bowl, two pairs of chopsticks. Joan Shaw picked up her chopsticks, intending to scoop half of the rice noodles into her own bowl, but Miles Xavier stopped her.
"You feed me. Let's just eat from the one bowl," he wheedled, acting surprisingly coy.
Joan Shaw's chopsticks froze. She looked mortified. "The owner is still in there. Have you no shame?"
"I don't care. If you don't feed me, I'm just going to sit here and not leave."
