The more Adrian Quincy looked, the more his heart ached. "I'm sorry. It's my fault."
"It's fine. I can bear it for a few days. When my dad used to hit me, I'd just wear long pants. I'm used to it."
The words were spoken casually, but he took them to heart.

Overcome with guilt, Adrian Quincy said in a deep voice, "Claire, from now on, no matter what you ask of me, I will never give you a hard time again. I would go through hell and high water for you. Let this be my lesson."

'He didn't have to make that kind of declaration, did he?'
"If I fail, I'll be at your mercy," Adrian Quincy added.
