Chapter 54 - Unexpected vows

[Ten Months After Wedding - Prison]

Dr. Wanchai called Rain unexpectedly. "I'm sorry to contact you, but I thought you should know. Phayu has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Stage four. He has maybe six months."

Rain felt his world tilt. "What?"

"He didn't want me to tell you. But I felt you deserved to know. He's being transferred to a hospice facility."

After hanging up, Rain sat in shock. Phayu was dying.

He told Prapai that evening. "I don't know how to feel. Part of me thinks he deserves it. Part of me feels... sad? Guilty for feeling sad?"

"All of those feelings are valid," Prapai said. "He hurt you terribly. But he's still human. It's okay to feel complicated things."

"He wrote me those letters. He seemed genuinely sorry. And now he's dying." Rain's voice cracked. "Should I visit him? One last time?"

"Do you want to?"

"I don't know. Maybe? For closure? Or am I just torturing myself?"

They talked late into the night, weighing options.

[One Week Later - Hospice Facility]

Rain decided to visit, Prapai waiting outside.

Phayu looked terrible—gaunt, pale, connected to machines. When he saw Rain, tears filled his eyes.

"You came."

"Dr. Wanchai told me." Rain sat down carefully. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I'm dying." Phayu's laugh was weak.

"Rain, I'm so sorry you felt obligated to come."

"I'm not obligated. I chose to." Rain studied him. "Why didn't you want me to know?"

"Because you've moved on. You're happy. I didn't want to drag you back into my mess."

Rain was surprised by the selflessness.

"That's... growth."

"Too little, too late." Phayu's voice was bitter. "I spent two years changing, and now I'm dying. Cosmic justice, I guess."

"I don't think you deserve to die," Rain said honestly. "I think you deserve to live with what you did, to continue helping others not become what you were."

"Thank you. That means more than you know."

They talked for an hour—about Phayu's treatment, his regrets, his hope that Rain was happy.

"Are you?" Phayu asked. "Happy?"

"Yes. I'm married. Building a career. Healing."

"Good." Phayu's smile was genuine. "That's all I wanted. Rain, I know I have no right to ask, but... can you forgive me? Not for me—I don't deserve it. But for you. So you can let go completely."

Rain considered. "I don't forgive what you did. But I forgive who you were—a sick person who didn't know how to love. And I hope you find peace."

"Thank you," Phayu whispered.

Rain left feeling lighter somehow.
