Chapter 164 - CHAPTER 164

Footsteps in the corridor grew clearer.

Not just a small team.

The rhythm was dense.

Orderly.

Approaching at a speed that left little time to think.

Richard Blackwood stood in front of the door, his body slightly angled to block part of the entryway. Weapon raised, breathing steady.

Leonard Graves took the left side, leaning against the wall with an open line of fire. His gaze swept the corridor, measuring distance, estimating entry points.

Daniel was at the back, near a small panel beside the door. His hands moved quickly, trying to make sense of the makeshift system.

"We can partially close this door," he said softly. "Won't hold long, but enough to slow them down."

Richard nodded briefly.

"Do it."

Inside the room.

The child still sat.

But their demeanor had shifted.

The cables around them trembled more actively. Some even lifted slightly from the floor, as if responding to something only they understood.

Their gaze was no longer empty.

There was focus there.

Direction.

"There's another path," they said suddenly.

Daniel turned quickly.

"Where?"

The child slowly raised their hand. The cables moved, forming faint patterns in the air, like a map drawn with living lines.

"Below," they continued.

Leonard glanced briefly.

"Secret under the floor. Classic."

Richard didn't turn around.

"How far?"

The child replied,

"Enough to get us out of their path… but not out of the network."

Daniel sighed.

"That's enough."

The sound of grinding metal came from outside.

They were getting closer.

Richard raised his hand.

"Ready."

Daniel pressed the final commands. The panel flickered, then the metal door shifted partially, leaving a narrow gap.

"This'll hold for a few seconds," he said.

Leonard smiled faintly.

"Sometimes a few seconds is more than enough."

The child slowly stood up.

Their movements were unsteady at first.

But the cables supported them, adjusting like extensions of their body.

Daniel watched anxiously.

"Can you walk?"

The child didn't answer.

But they took a step.

One step.

Then another.

Not perfect.

But enough.

Richard glanced back briefly.

"He's coming with us."

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"We're carrying extra cargo now?"

Richard replied flatly,

"He's the key."

No argument followed.

Because everyone felt the same.

The child wasn't just a victim.

They were part of something bigger.

And perhaps

the way out.

The sounds from outside grew closer.

Shadows began to show through the door gap.

Richard raised his weapon.

Leonard tensed.

Daniel stepped back slightly.

"Now or never," he murmured.

Richard gestured.

"Move."

Daniel immediately pressed another panel.

The floor in the middle of the room trembled.

Faint lines appeared.

Then it opened.

A downward access shaft.

Narrow metal stairs leading below.

Leonard let out a short laugh.

"I'm getting tired of underground places."

Richard didn't respond.

He made way.

"Go down."

Daniel helped the child move toward the access shaft.

But before they could move

the door behind them

SHATTERED.

A small explosion blew open a larger gap.

Armed forces poured in immediately.

The first shots were fired.

Leonard returned fire.

Richard moved forward.

Holding the entryway.

"Get down now!" he shouted.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

He helped the child down the stairs.

The cables followed, adjusting to the tight space.

Leonard retreated slowly, still firing accurately.

One enemy fell.

Then another.

But their numbers were too great.

Richard stayed at the front.

Every movement efficient.

Nothing wasted.

"Leonard!" he called out.

Leonard stepped back.

"Yeah, I know."

He leaped backward, dropping down the stairs.

Richard waited a split second.

Just long enough to make sure everyone was below.

Then he followed.

Daniel pressed the panel from below.

The floor above closed again.

Locking the entry path.

The sound of gunfire was muffled.

But not completely gone.

They were in a narrow corridor.

Darker.

Lower.

The air felt damp.

Daniel switched on a portable light.

Faint glow illuminated the path ahead.

The child stood in the middle.

Their cables were now attached to the walls.

As if searching for something.

"This way," they said softly.

Richard nodded.

"Lead the way."

They moved.

Quick steps.

But careful.

The corridor curved.

Descended deeper.

Some sections were nearly collapsed.

Others looked like old paths long out of use.

Leonard scanned the surroundings.

"This place is like a maze."

Daniel replied,

"And we don't have a map."

The child stopped suddenly.

Everyone went quiet at once.

Richard moved closer.

"What is it?"

The child turned slightly.

Their gaze sharp.

"They're not only coming from above."

Silence fell.

Leonard sighed.

"Of course."

Daniel looked back.

"Is there another way?"

The child nodded slightly.

"They'll try to cut us off."

Richard thought quickly.

"Fastest way out?"

The child raised their hand.

The cables moved again.

Forming a new direction.

"Turn right… then go down further."

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"Deeper still. Wonderful."

But they had no choice.

They resumed their steps.

Speed increased.

Tension rose.

And at the core of it all.

Ethan felt every bit of it.

Every step.

Every decision.

Every approaching threat.

He saw their path.

Saw the intercept points.

Saw the possibility of failure.

The pulse within him quickened.

He tried to shift the flow of energy.

Disrupt enemy signals.

Create small interference.

The corridor lights flickered.

Sensors went dead for a moment.

Enough to give them space.

But something held back.

Something within the network

fought back.

Not the main system.

But another part.

Wilder.

More uncontrolled.

Ethan realized.

It wasn't Helios.

It was… something else.

The child's signal.

Or perhaps

something connected to them.

In the lower corridor

the child stopped again.

Their body trembled slightly.

Daniel moved close at once.

"What's happening?"

The child stared ahead.

But not toward the path.

Farther than that.

"He sees us."

The silence turned cold instantly.

Leonard narrowed his eyes.

"Who?"

The child replied softly,

"The other one."

Richard raised his weapon.

His gaze sharp.

"We don't stop."

They started moving again.

But this time

faster.

More tense.

Because they knew

the path they had chosen

was no longer just an escape.

But a doorway to something bigger.

And perhaps

more dangerous.
