Chapter 170 - CHAPTER 170

Darkness was no longer just the absence of light.

It had become something alive.

Moving.

Watching.

The portable lamp in Daniel's hand trembled slightly, its light reflecting off the metal walls that now felt more cramped than before. Distortions appeared at various points, like ripples on an invisible water surface.

One to the left.

Two ahead.

Three… behind.

Leonard Graves raised his weapon, his breathing heavier than usual.

"Great. Now we're surrounded by something we can't shoot. This is fun."

Richard Blackwood did not respond.

He stood slightly ahead, his body blocking part of the path.

His eyes were sharp.

Watching every small movement.

"Don't panic," he said in a low voice.

Daniel swallowed.

"I'm not panicking… I'm just.."

One of the distortions moved.

Fast.

Not attacking.

But approaching.

The air around them trembled more strongly.

Daniel stepped back on instinct.

The child beside him tensed up.

"Don't move fast…" he whispered.

Leonard glanced over briefly.

"Got a better idea?"

The child stared toward the distortion.

His gaze shifted.

More focused.

Deeper.

"They're not stable yet…"

Richard immediately caught his meaning.

"What does that mean?"

The child replied softly,

"They're not fully here yet."

Silence.

But the meaning was clear.

There was a gap.

There was a chance.

Ethan

at the core

felt those points like disturbances in the network he controlled.

Not part of the system.

Yet still connected.

Like clinging parasites.

He tried to read their patterns.

But every time he got close

the pattern changed.

Not fixed.

Not logical.

But one thing was certain

they were learning.

"Don't let them touch you…" his voice echoed in Daniel's head.

Daniel spoke immediately,

"Ethan says don't let them touch us!"

Leonard smirked slightly.

"Very helpful advice."

But he wasn't entirely joking.

Because one of the distortions

began to stretch out.

Like a hand formed from darkness.

Richard moved faster.

He kicked a piece of metal on the floor toward the distortion.

The object passed through it

but created ripples.

A small reaction.

But enough.

"Disturb them," he said.

Leonard followed at once.

Firing bullets at the floor around the distortion.

Not to hit it.

But to create vibrations.

Sparks.

Change.

The distortion trembled.

Stepped back slightly.

Daniel understood.

"They're sensitive to environmental changes!"

The child nodded quickly.

"Because they're not fully anchored yet!"

Richard gave a short command,

"Create distractions. Move forward."

They began to move.

Slowly.

Coordinated.

Leonard shot to the left side.

Sparks flew up.

The distortion there trembled.

Stepped back.

Richard pushed ahead.

Daniel followed, still protecting the child.

But the distortions behind them

did not stay still.

One suddenly shot forward.

Faster than before.

Straight toward Daniel.

"Daniel!" Leonard shouted.

Daniel turned around.

Too late.

The distortion was almost touching him

but the child moved.

Fast.

Faster than he should have been able to in that condition.

He raised his hand.

The wires on his body moved wildly.

Forming a barrier.

The distortion hit it

and bounced off.

As if striking something invisible.

The child jolted.

His body almost fell.

Daniel caught him at once.

"You.."

The child shook his head.

"Don't stop…"

Richard did not look back.

"Keep moving forward."

Their steps grew faster.

The distortions began to react more aggressively.

No longer just watching.

But trying to reach out.

To catch.

The air around them felt heavier.

Every movement became harder.

Ethan felt the pressure building.

If this continued

they would not get out.

He made a decision.

Risky.

But necessary.

He diverted some energy from the core.

Creating a small surge in the network around them.

The lights in the corridor

suddenly turned on.

Bright.

Dazzling.

The distortions reacted immediately.

Their vibrations became chaotic.

Some even disappeared for a moment.

Daniel was shocked.

"What was that.."

"Use it!" Ethan's voice sounded weaker.

Richard seized the moment at once.

"Run!"

No more careful movements.

They ran.

Full out.

Leonard shot behind them.

Keeping them at bay.

Daniel pulled the child along.

Richard cleared the way ahead.

The distortions began to recover.

But more slowly.

The light disturbed them.

But did not stop them completely.

The corridor ahead

looked brighter.

The exit.

Only a few dozen meters away.

"Just a little more!" Daniel shouted.

But at that moment

the floor in front of them

cracked.

Not from damage.

But because something from below

was pushing up.

Richard stopped immediately.

Pulling Daniel back.

"Don't!"

The floor opened up.

And from within it

another distortion emerged.

Bigger.

Denser.

Unlike the others.

This one

was more stable.

Leonard muttered under his breath.

"We're not going to make it if this keeps up."

The child stared at the creature.

His eyes widened.

"That… is the core…"

Daniel turned quickly.

"Core of what?!"

The child did not answer.

But his body tensed up.

As if feeling something far deeper.

The creature moved.

Not fast.

But steady.

Each step made the air tremble.

Richard raised his weapon.

But did not fire.

He knew

it would not be enough.

Ethan felt the creature.

More clearly than the others.

Stronger.

More… real.

"That one… is different…" he whispered.

Daniel heard him.

"Yeah, we can see that too!"

A brief silence.

Then

Ethan said,

"I'll open a path."

Richard did not ask questions.

"Do it."

The energy around them shifted.

The network under the floor activated.

Panels on the corridor walls opened.

Sparks of electricity appeared.

A major disturbance.

The smaller distortions were immediately disrupted.

But the creature ahead

only paused for a moment.

Then kept moving.

Unfazed.

Daniel panicked.

"It's not stopping!"

Ethan replied,

"Because it's fully here now."

Silence.

But time did not stop.

Richard made a decision.

Fast.

Without hesitation.

"We destroy it."

Leonard grinned.

"Finally, I like this plan."

Richard pointed at the structure above.

"The supports."

Daniel understood at once.

"We bring down the ceiling."

The child stared at the creature.

His eyes full of tension.

"That won't kill it…"

Richard replied,

"We don't need to. Just hold it back."

Leonard was already moving.

Shooting at structural points.

Metal screeched.

Cracks appeared.

Daniel helped with his device.

Disrupting the support system.

The creature drew closer.

Faster now.

As if realizing what they were doing.

"Now!" Richard shouted.

Leonard fired one more shot.

and

COLLAPSE.

The ceiling above them caved in.

Stone.

Metal.

Dust.

Everything fell

crashing onto the creature.

A loud impact echoed out.

The corridor was partially blocked.

Daniel took a heavy breath.

"We have to go!"

Richard did not wait.

"Move!"

They ran again.

Past the remains of the corridor.

Toward the light ahead.

And finally

they got out.

The emergency door was open.

Fresh air hit their faces.

They stopped a few meters from the door.

Breathing heavily.

Bodies tense.

But

they were safe.

For now.

Leonard looked back.

The corridor was dark now.

Quiet.

But not empty.

He exhaled.

"I don't think that's the last we'll see of them."

Richard stared straight ahead.

His gaze cold.

"No."

Daniel looked at the child.

"And we're not done with it either."

The child did not answer.

But his eyes

were still looking in the same direction.

Inward.

To where something

that should not exist

was already looking for its next way out.
