Chapter 173 - CHAPTER 173

The city lights did not welcome them.

They flickered.

Unsteady.

Like a heartbeat unsure whether to pulse or stop.

Their vehicle slowed as they entered the main road. Buildings grew dense, store signs half-lit, some completely dark. Not many people were visible only a few silhouettes on the sidewalk moving quickly, as if avoiding something with no clear form yet.

Daniel stared out the window.

"Something's wrong here…"

Leonard Graves leaned back in the front seat.

"I'd be shocked if everything was normal."

Richard Blackwood did not lose focus.

His eyes scanned every corner.

Every alley.

Every window.

The place felt… alive.

But not in the right way.

The child in the back seat stared straight ahead.

Not blinking.

His body was still weak.

But his consciousness.

Was too sharp.

"He has started…" he whispered.

Daniel turned quickly.

"What do you mean?"

The child lifted his hand slightly.

The wires on his body trembled softly.

Like antennas picking up something beyond human hearing.

"He is no longer spreading aimlessly…"

He paused for a moment.

His breath was slow.

"…he is gathering."

Leonard sighed.

"Of course he's gathering."

Richard turned the vehicle onto a wider street.

Ahead.

A large intersection.

Traffic lights flashed yellow.

No other vehicles were moving.

But something made them all fall silent.

A group of people stood in the middle of the road.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Only… standing.

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

"What are they… doing there?"

Leonard leaned forward.

"This is the part where I say don't stop."

But Richard had already slowed down.

Not out of hesitation.

But to observe.

Those people.

Did not react to the vehicle.

Did not turn their heads.

Did not move.

Like… they were waiting.

The child tensed up.

"Don't get close…"

Daniel spoke immediately,

"Richard.."

But it was too late.

One of them moved.

Slowly.

Their head turned.

Staring straight at the vehicle.

Their eyes.

Empty.

No expression.

But there was something inside them.

A moment later.

The others moved too.

One by one.

Turning.

Staring.

Leonard muttered under his breath.

"I hate this."

Richard spun the steering wheel at once.

Avoiding the crowd.

But they.

Started walking.

Not fast.

But steady.

Heading for the vehicle.

Daniel felt his heart beat faster.

"They're not normal…"

The child whispered,

"They've been touched…"

The silence immediately turned tense.

Leonard raised his weapon.

"If they get close.."

Richard cut him off,

"We don't shoot civilians."

Leonard glanced slightly.

"What if they're no longer civilians?"

The question hung in the air.

No quick answer came.

Because they all knew.

The line had blurred.

The people drew closer.

Their steps in unison.

Not rushed.

But unstopping.

Daniel looked at their eyes again.

And for a split second.

He saw something moving inside them.

Like small shadows.

Alive.

"Ethan…" he whispered.

The voice came at once.

Faint.

But clear.

"…they… are connected…"

Daniel swallowed hard.

"Connected how?!"

The answer came with a pause.

"…not controlled… but influenced…"

The child nodded slowly.

"He's learning to use them…"

Leonard let out a long breath.

"Great. So now we have humans as intermediaries."

Richard accelerated the vehicle.

Pulling away from the crowd.

But in the rearview mirror.

They were still visible.

Not chasing.

But standing.

Staring.

As if they knew.

This was not over.

A few blocks later.

Richard stopped the vehicle on a quieter side street.

The buildings around looked empty.

Some windows were broken.

Some doors stood open.

Daniel got out immediately.

Helping the child out.

Leonard secured the area.

Richard stood in the middle of the road.

Staring toward the city center.

"This is the core," he said softly.

Daniel nodded.

"Energy is thickest here."

The child stared at a tall building in the distance.

One of the few still lit.

Its lights were bright.

Different from the rest.

"That…"

Everyone turned.

The building stood alone.

Taller.

Brighter.

As if it were the focus of everything.

"He is there," the child continued.

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"Of course he picks the most noticeable spot."

Richard observed the building.

"Distance?"

Daniel checked his device.

"About one kilometer."

Silence fell.

But the decision was clear.

Richard spoke briefly,

"We walk."

Leonard sighed.

"I'm starting to miss plans that involve rest."

But he still followed.

Daniel helped the child walk.

Their steps led toward the building.

Toward the new core.

Toward something that was growing.

Inside.

Ethan felt everything.

Clearer than before.

Network fragments gathered.

Leading to one point.

The city.

The building.

And at the center of it all.

Something was taking shape.

No longer small traces.

But something more whole.

More conscious.

More… dangerous.

"…he is making a new core…" he whispered.

Daniel reacted at once,

"Ethan says he's making a new core!"

Leonard stared ahead.

"Great. We're back to the start, but worse."

The child stared at the building.

His gaze shifted.

Not just fear.

But… recognition.

"Not an ordinary core…"

He whispered.

"This… is where he learns to become something else."

Silence fell.

But their steps did not stop.

Because they knew.

If they were too late.

Whatever was forming there.

Would no longer be stoppable.

And at the top of the building.

Behind glass that reflected the city lights.

Something stood.

Watching.

Waiting.

No longer hidden.

No longer hesitant.

It had found its place.

And now.

It waited for them to come.

Their steps drew closer to the city center.

The asphalt underfoot felt warmer not from temperature but from invisible energy. Every streetlight they passed flickered erratically, as if adjusting to something new that had arrived.

Daniel stared at the screen in his hand.

The signal grew denser.

No longer random.

Starting… to form patterns.

"He's not just gathering," he murmured softly. "He's building something."

Leonard glanced briefly.

"Like a puzzle?"

Daniel shook his head.

"More like… a neural network."

Silence fell.

Because that meant one thing.

It was not just a system.

But something that was starting… to think.

The child stopped suddenly.

His steps halted in the middle of the cracked sidewalk.

Richard stopped immediately too.

"What is it?"

The child stared ahead.

Toward the tall building.

Not just seeing.

He was feeling.

"He knows we're coming."

Leonard sighed.

"Yeah, I'm starting to think we were never subtle."

But his tone was not casual.

There was real tension.

Daniel swallowed hard.

"Ethan…?"

The voice came again.

Farther away.

Heavier.

"…he sees you… through them…"

Daniel spun around quickly.

The street looked empty.

But not truly.

Behind windows.

At alley ends.

On building rooftops.

There were silhouettes.

Not always clear.

But enough to be felt.

They were being watched.

"Great…" Leonard muttered. "I've always liked being the center of attention."

Richard did not waste time.

"Don't stop for too long."

They resumed walking.

But now.

Faster.

More tense.

Every corner felt like a trap.

Every silhouette felt like an eye.

They entered a small plaza area in front of the building.

Marble floors were cracked in places.

The fountain in the middle was no longer running.

But its surface.

Was churning.

Even though there was no wind.

Daniel watched closely.

"It's… moving on its own…"

The child stared at it.

His face was slightly pale.

"Don't get close…"

Leonard raised an eyebrow.

"I wasn't planning on taking a swim in there."

Richard walked straight ahead.

Toward the building's main entrance.

The large glass doors.

Were closed.

But not locked.

He pushed them slowly.

And.

They opened.

A soft scraping sound echoed.

Empty.

Quiet.

But not dead.

The building's lobby was spacious.

Lights were partially on.

Partially off.

The reception desk was empty.

But the screen behind it was still active.

Displaying data that kept changing.

Fast.

Illegible.

Daniel stepped closer slightly.

His eyes narrowed.

"That's not a normal system…"

Leonard stood beside him.

"I'd be shocked if it was normal."

The child stepped inside.

Slowly.

As if drawn in.

The wires on his body started moving again.

More active.

More alive.

"He's upstairs…" he whispered.

Richard looked immediately at the elevator.

Doors closed.

Indicator light off.

"Can't be used."

Leonard pointed to the emergency stairs.

"Classic option."

Richard nodded.

"We go up."

But before they could move.

The screen behind the reception desk.

Changed.

All data disappeared.

Replaced by one thing.

Black.

Then.

A line appeared.

Vertical.

Like a crack.

Daniel tensed up.

"That.."

The line moved.

Slowly.

Opening.

And from inside it.

Something emerged.

Not a complete form.

But a shadow.

Unlike the ones before.

More stable.

Clearer.

Leonard raised his weapon at once.

"I guess we're not going up peacefully."

Richard did not wait.

"Take positions."

The child stood at the front.

Not because he was weak.

But because he knew.

This would happen.

The shadow came out of the screen.

As if breaking through boundaries.

The floor beneath did not crack.

Did not change.

But the air around them.

Was heavy.

As if gravity had increased.

Daniel almost lost his balance.

"What is this…"

The child whispered,

"It's no longer a small fragment…"

He stared at the creature.

"…it's an envoy."

Silence fell.

But not for long.

Because the creature moved.

Immediately.

Fast.

Faster than any before.

Richard fired.

Bullets hit their mark.

The creature stopped for a moment.

But did not retreat.

Leonard fired too.

Sparks appeared.

Distortion occurred.

But the creature.

Remained.

Ethan felt its presence.

Clearer than before.

Closer.

"…it's directly connected…" his voice was tense.

Daniel shouted,

"Directly to the core!"

The child nodded.

"He sent part of himself here…"

Leonard sighed.

"Great. So this is the upgraded version."

The creature raised something.

That looked like a hand.

But not entirely.

And as it moved.

The air in front of them split.

Not physically.

But it was felt.

Richard pushed Daniel aside immediately.

The attack passed them by.

And the wall behind.

Cracked.

Not from impact.

But because… its reality was disrupted.

Daniel stared in horror.

"It can damage space…"

The child whispered,

"Because he's not fully from here…"

Silence turned to full tension.

Richard stood up again.

His gaze sharper.

"If that's the case…"

He raised his weapon.

"…we force him to be from here."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"I like that plan."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Richard stared at the creature.

"The more stable he is… the more he can be attacked."

The child understood at once.

"Force him to hold one form…"

Daniel stared at his device.

"I can help with frequencies…"

Leonard readied himself.

"And I'll help the old-fashioned way."

The creature moved again.

But this time.

They were ready.

The battle inside the building.

Had only just begun.

And above.

On a higher floor.

Something waited.

Watching.

Learning.

And for the first time.

Smiled without a face.
