Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Quite Before The Spark

Chapter 9: The Quiet Before the Spark

Night fell slowly over Konoha.

Lantern light flickered along the streets, warm and gentle, painting the village in gold. Laughter drifted from open restaurants. The smell of grilled meat and miso soup hung in the air.

Everything felt so peaceful.

Almost deceptively so.

Inside his home, Kenzo sat alone. The cup of water in his hand had long since gone untouched.

He wasn't meditating, nor was he thinking deeply.

He was simply… observing his surroundings, taking in the night's atmosphere within Konoha.

At the surface, of course.

But in reality, he was checking for chakra signatures.

As he focused, he caught it.

Faint threads of foreign chakra were embedded in his walls, pulsing at steady intervals.

Whoever placed them was a professional at his work. The signatures were controlled, masked carefully beneath the village's normal everyday chakra flow.

One thing was certain — they weren't amateurs.

Which meant this wasn't some casual surveillance.

It was high-level surveillance.

Meaning there were at least multiple Jonin present, maybe even elite Jonin.

Kenzo's eyes darkened slightly.

With such a tight watch on him, he would truly have trouble doing anything in private.

Like if they saw his abnormal growth rate.

His eyes darkened even further at the thought of that.

Before settling into an eternal calm.

Kenzo set the cup down gently, showing none of his previous irritation.

It seemed he would have no choice but to become a rogue ninja.

Kenzo let out a quiet sigh in his mind.

He hadn't even arrived in this world for a proper day before he was forced to consider becoming a rogue ninja.

Without further delay, he went to his tatami mat and lay down to sleep. His body demanded rest right now.

He had been running around for almost a full day. He needed proper rest for tomorrow.

With a small yawn, he closed his eyes.

He knew that Hiruzen wouldn't make a move inside the village itself.

That would be practically political suicide for him.

Besides, he wasn't some weakling who could be killed with a single strike.

Of course, he still set up some simple traps around the house, not caring whether the surveillance outside noticed them or not.

Let them see.

It would only reinforce caution.

The morning arrived with a pale gray light slipping through his windows.

The village slowly stirred to life.

Merchants opened there stalls.

Training grounds beginning to echo with early strikes.

Kenzo opened his eyes calmly.

Another day in Konoha had begun.

And the tension beneath its peaceful surface had only grown thicker.

Meanwhile…

Deep into the night.

Deep beneath the Naka Shrine, torches burned low against the ancient stone walls. The underground chamber was silent except for the faint crackle of flame.

The Uchiha elders stood in a half-circle.

At the center stood Fugaku Uchiha.

His posture was straight. His expression unreadable.

"The surveillance has increased again," one of the elders spoke quietly. "Our patrol routes are being watched more closely now."

Another added, "Even the younger members report being followed."

A ripple of restrained anger moved through the chamber.

As everyone began discussing their grievances, voices layered over one another.

Midway through the murmurs, Fugaku raised his hand.

Silence instantly followed.

"This was expected," he said calmly.

A younger shinobi stepped forward, unable to hide his frustration.

"Expected? They treat us like prisoners inside our own village.

And we are expected to endure this?"

Fugaku's gaze shifted toward him.

"And what would you suggest?"

The young man hesitated.

Before he could speak further—

"Emotion is not strategy."

Fugaku continued his words calmly.

Instantly, the chamber grew quiet again.

"The Hokage fears instability," Fugaku continued. "Danzo fears what he cannot control. The Uchiha have always represented both for them."

An elder narrowed his eyes.

"Then perhaps it is time we stop allowing ourselves to be controlled by others."

The implication was clear.

The word coup did not need to be spoken aloud.

But everyone understood the meaning behind those words.

Fugaku did not respond immediately.

Instead, he looked at everyone carefully, reading the determination in their eyes.

"We move when success is certain," he said at last. "Not when we are angry."

Understood.

Many of the clan members nodded slightly.

Then another elder spoke.

"There is another matter."

Fugaku glanced toward him.

"The boy named Kenzo."

"Who's that?" one of the younger clan members asked his friend in a whispering tone.

"No idea," another similarly young clan member shook his head. "I don't know myself."

The elder continued, not caring about the whispers of the younger clan members.

"Root and ANBU elites are monitoring him twenty-four seven.

I don't know what he has done to gain such attention from the Hokage and his adviser.

But he is still a member of our clan.

Shouldn't we intervene, at least a little?"

"That's enough. We will not be discussing this matter any further."

Fugaku said this in a very stern tone.

Did Fugaku not know?

Of course he knew.

He simply chose not to intervene in this matter.

Right now, the Uchiha clan needed stability.

They needed to sharpen their knife in secret so they could strike back at the Hokage when the time was right.

And claim victory in a single sweep, finally pulling the Uchiha clan out of this mess.

He was not going to clash with the Hokage over a single clan member—

One who wasn't even important in the grand scheme of things.
