Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 : Return to Normal

The whispers started before I reached the front doors.

"That's him. Donovan's brother." "His sister ran away on Halloween." "I heard she was doing drugs again." "Probably dead in a ditch somewhere."

I kept my expression neutral and walked through the hallways like I couldn't hear every word. Caroline stayed close, her hand finding mine, her presence a shield against the curious stares.

"Ignore them," she murmured. "They'll find something else to gossip about by Friday."

"I know."

But ignoring them was harder than it should have been. Every whisper felt like salt in the wound. They didn't know Vicki was dead. They didn't know I'd held her body as she turned to ash. They just saw a scandal, a story, something to break up the monotony of high school.

I made it to my locker before Elena found me.

She looked as exhausted as I felt—dark circles under her eyes, shoulders hunched, the particular tension of someone who'd witnessed something they couldn't process. Stefan wasn't with her, which meant she was here to talk without vampire supervision.

"Matt. Can we—" She glanced at Caroline. "Talk? Alone?"

Caroline stiffened. "Whatever you have to say—"

"It's okay." I squeezed Caroline's hand. "Give us a minute?"

She didn't like it, but she nodded. "I'll get us coffee. Your usual?"

"Extra sugar."

She kissed my cheek and headed toward the cafeteria, shooting Elena a look that promised consequences if she made things worse.

Elena pulled me into an empty classroom, checking the hallway before closing the door.

"What ARE you?" The question burst out like she'd been holding it for days. "At Halloween—I saw you. The blood moving like it was alive. The weapons forming out of nothing. And Vicki, she was—" She pressed her hands against her eyes. "She was really a vampire, wasn't she?"

"Yes."

"And Stefan killed her to save me."

"Yes."

"And you were trying to save her, and I—" Elena's voice broke. "I'm so sorry. You were trying so hard, and I didn't understand, and now she's—"

"Dead." I finished the sentence she couldn't. "Vicki is dead. Stefan did what he had to do. And I don't blame you for any of it."

"But you have powers. Actual supernatural powers. How—why—"

"I don't know." The same answer I'd given Stefan in the cemetery, weeks ago. Still true. "I woke up one day and could do things with blood. Control it. Shape it. Heal with it. I've been training all summer, trying to prepare for..." I gestured vaguely. "This. All of this."

Elena processed that. I could see the questions forming—dozens of them, probably—but she held most of them back.

"Stefan says I can trust you. That you've been protecting people—vervain in the food at the Grill, the bracelet you made Caroline."

"Yeah."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

The question hit harder than she probably intended. I leaned against a desk, suddenly exhausted despite sixteen hours of sleep.

"Because I didn't know who to trust. Because people with powers get used or killed or both. Because I thought I could handle it alone." I met her eyes. "I was wrong about the last part."

"Stefan trusts you. That means something."

"Stefan staked my sister. That means something too."

The silence that followed was thick with everything neither of us could say. Finally, Elena spoke.

"I won't tell anyone. About your abilities." She hesitated. "In return, I need you to keep helping. Protecting people. Bonnie's grandmother—Grams—she's been saying things. That more supernatural stuff is coming. That Mystic Falls is some kind of... convergence point."

I thought about the tomb under Fell's Church. Twenty-six starving vampires, waiting for Damon to find a way to free them.

"She's right," I said. "More is coming. A lot more."

"Then we need allies. People who know what's really happening." Elena extended her hand. "Truce? Partnership? Whatever you want to call it."

I shook her hand. Her grip was firmer than I expected—the doppelganger had steel beneath the surface.

"Partnership," I agreed. "But we do this my way. No reckless hero moments. No confronting vampires without backup. And no telling Bonnie or anyone else until we're sure they can handle it."

"Deal."

The bell rang, signaling the end of our stolen moment. Elena headed for the door, then paused.

"For what it's worth... I'm sorry about Vicki. Stefan told me how hard you fought to save her."

"It wasn't enough."

"It was everything you had. That matters."

She slipped out, leaving me alone with the echoes of her words.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. Classes I couldn't focus on. Conversations I couldn't remember. The constant weight of grief pressing against my chest, demanding attention I refused to give it.

Between periods, Caroline found me with coffee—made exactly how I liked it, extra sugar, the warmth of the cup grounding me in the present. She'd memorized my order. Such a small thing, but it cracked something open in my chest.

"Thank you." I kissed her forehead. "For everything. For yesterday. For being here."

"Always." She smiled, and for a moment, the grief receded. "That's what girlfriends are for."

At lunch, I caught Bonnie staring at me.

Not suspicious. Not hostile. Just... curious. Like she was seeing something in me that wasn't visible to normal eyes.

Grams had already told her to watch me.

I finished my food, avoiding her gaze, and started planning my next move. I needed to rebuild my blood supply. Needed to research how to advance to Stage 2. Needed to approach Grams about what she knew.

Most of all, I needed to become strong enough that next time—because there would be a next time—I wouldn't fail.

The war wasn't over. Vicki's death had just been the first battle.

I intended to win the rest.
