Chapter 52 - Theory in Blood and Steel

The early morning sun broke through the misty valley, painting the central courtyard of the Infinite Archive in pale, cold gold.

Mokshit, Rohan, Meera, and Nikhil stood side by side in a tight, balanced line. Their limbs felt like lead and their eyes were still slightly bloodshot from seven grueling days of nineteen-hour study cycles, but their stances were remarkably firm. Standing twenty paces across from them were their three tutors—Brook, Jessy, and Misty—each holding weighted wooden practice weapons.

Master Satoshi and Master Serena sat atop the elevated stone dais overlooking the court, watching closely. Standing near the doorway of the medical pavilion just behind them was the recovered, silent teenage girl and her small brother. Her left leg was wrapped in clean, tight bandages. Her eyes remained guarded, her lips sealed tight about her name or past, but her sharp, analytical gaze never left the training field.

"The Sovereign Summit made one thing abundantly clear," Satoshi announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. "Raw power without control is dead weight. You've crammed seven days of high-level literature into your heads. Now show me if you can translate text into live combat. Brook, Jessy, Misty—don't hold back."

"Begin!" Serena called out, her hand cutting through the air.

In a fraction of a second, Jessy blurred forward. Her wind-infused speed whipped up a violent gust of air as she lunged straight toward Rohan, her wooden saber whistling toward his neck.

Instead of panicking or retreating, Rohan's eyes flared with intense focus. In his mind, the exact section from Hearth-Fire Thermodynamics he had memorized on day four surfaced instantly: Do not meet rapid friction with force—read the thermal vector. He pivoted sharply on his heel, letting Jessy's blade graze millimeters past his shoulder. Channeling a sudden, ultra-compressed burst of thermal energy into his open palm, he struck sideways against her wrist, deflecting her arm and ruining her momentum.

"Nice reaction!" Jessy grinned, twisting mid-air like an acrobat to reset her balance.

Simultaneously, Misty flicked her fingers, launching four high-speed water-arrows directly at Meera's blind spots. Meera took a deep, rhythmic breath, applying her newly refined understanding of the Zero-Beat. She paused for a micro-second, reading the precise delay in Misty's spell trajectory, before stepping fluidly through the narrow opening between the arrows without taking a single hit.

Meanwhile, Brook stepped toward Mokshit and Nikhil, his heavy wooden longsword swinging down in a crushing arc.

"Spatial compression on the left!" Nikhil warned, instantly calculating the coordinate plane.

"Got the node," Mokshit muttered. Utilizing his Verdant Logic, Mokshit didn't try to block Brook's swing directly. Instead, he slammed his palm onto the stone, sprouting a precise network of dense, reinforced vine-roots right at the exact fulcrum of Brook's front foot, throwing the senior tutor's footing off by a fraction of an inch and forcing him to check his strike.

Satoshi chuckled softly from the dais. "Not bad. They aren't just swinging blindly anymore—they're actually reading the flow."

Before the mock battle could escalate any further, the perimeter wards surrounding the Archive suddenly shrieked with a high-pitched, vibrating hum.

The brass danger-sense gem at Brook's belt shattered into fine gray dust.

From the tree line bordering the mist-heavy forest, three dark, shadowy figures materialized out of thin air. Draped in tattered grey cloaks with mask-covered faces, they exuded a cold, predatory aura. They ignored the masters entirely, their piercing eyes locking directly onto the wounded teenage girl standing near the medical wing.

"Target located," one of the shadowy pursuers rasped, drawing twin jagged daggers. "Hand over the runaways, Archive, or face immediate elimination."

"Trackers..." Serena whispered, her sharp eyes narrowing as her aura began to flare.

"Wait, Masters!" Brook called out, stepping back from his students and sheathing his wooden sword. He looked up toward Satoshi with a cold, competitive glint in his eye. "Let the kids handle this. Consider it their unscripted practical exam."

Satoshi smirked, folding his arms across his chest. "You heard him. Mokshit, Rohan, Meera, Nikhil—these uninvited shadow guests came to crash your test. Put your books to work, protect the children, and clean up our courtyard!"

Mokshit shifted his stance, green mana flickering around his hands as his eyes locked onto the lead pursuer. "You heard the Master. Let's see if those nineteen hours of reading were worth it."
