Chapter 155 - The Empress Awakens

Air Groove's skill activated with that familiar sharpening of vision as blurred shapes crystallized into perfect clarity. She could see every detail of Silence Suzuka's form ahead, the slight tension in her shoulders and the way her breathing had deepened, small signs of fatigue that weren't dramatic but were there.

"I can catch her," Air Groove thought with growing confidence. "I know I can."

Eight and a half lengths, then eight.

The track opened up ahead as they came out of the third turn with one thousand meters left. The final straight is still a ways off, but close enough to feel it approaching, and Silence Suzuka glanced back, for just a moment, their eyes met.

Silence Suzuka felt something she hadn't felt since the Tulip Sho, real pressure of the kind that made doubt creep in at the edges. Air Groove was closing, actually closing, and Silence Suzuka could feel her own stamina starting to show cracks as her speed dropped just slightly, just enough that the gap stopped growing and started shrinking instead.

Seven and a half lengths, then seven.

"No," Silence Suzuka whispered to herself. "Not again..."

The Tulip Sho flashed through her mind with Air Groove chasing her down in that desperate final sprint where she'd barely held on, and the way doubt had crept in and made everything harder. She couldn't let that happen again, but her legs felt heavy, heavier than they should at this point, since the early pace was catching up with her. Two thousand four hundred meters was long, longer than she'd run all out before, and maybe Air Groove was right that distance changed everything.

Seven lengths, then six and a half.

"SILENCE SUZUKA'S PACE IS DROPPING! AIR GROOVE IS CLOSING FAST! SIX AND A HALF LENGTHS AND FALLING!"

The crowd noise reached a fever pitch, and even through her ear cover Silence Suzuka could feel the vibration from sixty thousand people screaming. The pressure of it pressed down hard while the gap kept closing.

Six lengths.

Then from somewhere deep inside, a voice spoke, not her voice but Hayato's. A memory from training, standing at the track after a brutal session with her legs shaking and body exhausted, ready to give up on the Great Escape strategy because everyone kept telling her it wouldn't work in distance races.

"You're the uma musume most suited to this running style," Hayato had said with a voice calm and absolute trust Silence Suzuka can do it.

"Not because you're the fastest, but because you love it more than anyone else. You love that view from the front, that silence where it's just you and the track. Don't let anyone take that from you."

The doubt cracked inside her chest.

"He's right," Suzuka thought with sudden clarity. "This is my running style, my way of racing, and I'm not giving it up for anyone."

Something shifted inside her chest, not breaking but breaking free, as golden light erupted around her body. Brilliant and blinding, it made the afternoon sun look dim by comparison while the fatigue didn't disappear but got pushed back, held at bay by sheer force of will and skill activation. Her stride lengthened again as power flooded back into legs that had started to flag.

Her skill evolved in that moment, grew beyond what it had been into something more.

With All My Soul! : When positioned toward the front mid-race, slightly increase the velocity and minimally decrease the velocity of runners behind the skill user. (Medium)

Not just running fast or taking the lead, but refusing to let anyone take it back and refusing to let doubt poison what she loved most. The golden glow pulsed once, twice, then settled into steady radiance around her form.

"I'm sorry, Air Groove-senpai," Suzuka said with a voice carrying steel beneath the politeness. "Even against you, I can't lose. Even if the whole world says this running style won't work, I'll prove them wrong, because this is who I am."

The gap stopped shrinking as six lengths stayed six lengths, then impossibly it started growing again to six and a half, then seven.

"WHAT?! SUZUKA IS ACCELERATING AGAIN! SHE'S PULLING AWAY FROM AIR GROOVE!"

Air Groove's eyes widened in disbelief. "No, that's not possible!"

She pushed harder with legs pumping and skill still active, vision still sharp, but the gap kept growing anyway to seven and a half lengths, then eight.

"How?!" Air Groove's breathing came harder now as the smooth control started to crack. "How can you still accelerate?!"

Behind them, Fight Gulliver watched the golden light flare and felt something cold settle in her stomach. She'd been waiting patiently, saving her stamina for the final three hundred meters like she'd planned while watching Suzuka and Air Groove battle and waiting for them to tire each other out.

But that golden glow wasn't the light of someone getting tired, that was someone breaking through their limits.

"Damn it, she still has that speed even after the uphill section?!" Fight Gulliver muttered under her breath.

A thousand meters left, and Silence Suzuka's golden glow held steady with speed maintained in that impossible pace that shouldn't be sustainable but somehow was. Air Groove refused to give up as she kept pushing and kept chasing, but the gap wouldn't close at eight lengths, solid and unmovable.

Her lungs burned while her legs started to feel heavy. She'd timed her acceleration well and had plenty of stamina left, but Silence Suzuka's response had thrown everything off, and the realization hit hard: "I can't catch her like this, not with just speed. I need something more."

Eight hundred meters remaining.

The fourth turn approached as the final corner before the home stretch, and after this, it was just straight running to the finish. Silence Suzuka swept into it first with body leaning and form perfect, golden light trailing behind her like a comet's tail, while Air Groove entered the turn eight lengths back with jaw clenched and mind racing.

She'd been called the Empress since her debut, the name given by others as an expectation she'd spent her whole career trying to live up to. But right now, chasing Silence Suzuka's impossible back, something crystallized inside her with absolute clarity.

The title wasn't something to chase, it was something to become.

"I am the Empress," she thought, and the words carried weight and authority. "Not because someone called me that, but because I claim it."

Purple energy flickered around her body, faint at first, then growing stronger. Not a hunting ground like Fight Gulliver's golden zone or pastoral dreams like Suzuka's blue-green mist, this was something different entirely. Authority and dominion, the presence of someone who commanded rather than asked, and the air around Air Groove grew heavy and thick with royal pressure.

Purple light coiled and twisted while forming shapes that looked almost like flowing robes and a crown that existed only in perception.

Her Zone erupted.

Not from desperation but from acceptance, finally understanding what she'd been denying her whole career. She wasn't chasing the title of empress because she was the empress, had always been, and just needed to stop doubting and claim it.

"WHAT'S HAPPENING?! AIR GROOVE'S SPEED JUST SKYROCKETED! THIS IS WAY BEYOND HER PREVIOUS PACE—I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS FROM HER RACE!"

The purple Zone pulsed outward with heavy oppressive weight that made the uma musume around her stumble slightly from the sheer presence. Air Groove's eyes changed to something still focused but different, colder and more certain, the gaze of someone who'd never needed to beg for anything.

"Silence Suzuka," she said with a voice carrying across the distance. "You're not the only one who refuses to lose!"
