Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Something in the Frame

The next evening felt unusually peaceful.

No tension.

No strange interruptions.

Just a quiet, golden sunset spreading across the campus.

Samantha's dorm was lively again.

"Okay, this time we do it properly," Alex said, standing in the middle of the room like a director on set. "No mistakes."

Chloe snorted. "You said that last time."

"And this time I mean it."

Nathan leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "You always mean it."

Ariel laughed softly.

Samantha sat on the edge of her desk, watching them with a small smile.

"Alright," she said, "what's the plan this time?"

Alex turned dramatically.

"We improve the film."

Nathan groaned.

"Why am I still involved in this?"

"Because," Alex said, pointing at him, "you are the main character."

"I never agreed to that."

"You didn't need to."

Chloe clapped her hands.

"I'm still the villain, right?"

"Obviously," Alex said.

Ariel raised her hand slightly.

"What about me?"

"You're still the assistant."

Ariel smiled, satisfied.

Alex turned to Samantha.

"And you…"

He paused.

"You're the strategist."

Samantha raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds serious."

"It is," Alex said. "You guide the hero."

Nathan sighed.

"I don't like where this is going."

"Too late," Chloe said.

Filming began again.

This time, they used more of Samantha's equipment.

Better lighting.

Better angles.

Even the drone helped capture aerial shots.

At one point, Nathan stood in the center of the room while Chloe dramatically circled him.

"You cannot defeat me!" she declared.

Nathan blinked.

"…I don't even know what we're doing anymore."

"JUST FIGHT BACK!" Chloe shouted.

Ariel burst into laughter.

Samantha covered her mouth, trying not to laugh too.

Alex, however, was fully serious.

"This is cinema."

Nathan deadpanned.

"This is chaos."

Later, after multiple retakes, they gathered around Alex's phone to watch what they had filmed.

"Okay…" Alex said, scrolling through the footage. "This one is actually good."

Everyone leaned in.

The video played.

Nathan stood confidently.

Chloe delivered her dramatic villain speech.

Ariel ran into frame at the wrong time.

"Pause," Chloe said. "Why am I actually good at this?"

"You're naturally dramatic," Samantha replied.

"Thank you."

They continued watching.

Then something strange happened.

The video flickered.

Just for a second.

Alex frowned.

"…Did you see that?"

Nathan's expression changed slightly.

"Go back."

Alex rewound the clip.

They watched again.

Everything looked normal.

Chloe groaned. "Probably just your terrible editing."

"Hey," Alex protested.

But Nathan wasn't convinced.

"Play it again."

Alex sighed but replayed it.

This time…

They all saw it.

For a single frame—

Something stood behind Nathan.

A shape.

Distorted.

Tall.

Not human.

Then it was gone.

Silence filled the room.

Ariel spoke first, her voice small.

"…Was that part of the video?"

"No," Alex said slowly.

Chloe leaned closer.

"Pause it."

Alex froze the frame.

They zoomed in.

Nothing.

Empty background.

Samantha frowned.

"That's weird."

Nathan stared at the screen.

His eyes narrowed.

"I saw something like that yesterday."

Everyone looked at him.

"At the window," he added.

Chloe waved it off.

"You're both overthinking it. It's probably just a glitch."

But her voice wasn't as confident as usual.

Samantha looked at the screen again.

Something about it felt wrong.

Like the image itself didn't want to be understood.

Ariel shifted closer to Nathan.

"Hey…" she said softly. "You okay?"

Nathan nodded.

"Yeah."

Chloe noticed immediately.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Then she leaned against the table casually.

"Relax, Ariel. He's not going to disappear."

Ariel looked at her.

"I wasn't worried about that."

"Sure you weren't."

Samantha quickly stepped in.

"Alright, enough. It's probably nothing."

Alex forced a laugh.

"Yeah. Just a glitch. Happens all the time."

But even he didn't sound convinced.

Later that night…

The group began to leave.

Ariel waved goodbye to Nathan, her smile lingering a little longer than necessary.

Chloe watched the entire exchange.

Arms crossed.

Unimpressed.

Alex stretched as he stepped into the hallway.

"That was fun. We should do it again."

"We will," Samantha said.

Nathan paused at the door.

He looked back at the room.

At the screen.

At the exact spot where the figure had appeared.

For a moment…

He felt it again.

That same presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then he turned and left.

Much later…

When the dorm was finally quiet…

Samantha sat alone at her desk.

She stared at the paused video on the screen.

That single frame.

She zoomed in again.

Still nothing.

But her instincts told her something was there.

Something they couldn't see.

Her device suddenly flickered.

Just once.

Then a message appeared briefly on the screen.

So fast she almost missed it.

"You're getting closer."

Samantha froze.

"…What?"

The screen went back to normal.

Her heart began to beat faster.

Far away…

In a dark room filled with glowing monitors…

The Masked man watched everything.

The video.

The reaction.

The confusion.

His fingers tapped slowly against the desk.

"They noticed."

He smiled.

"Good."

The screen shifted to Nathan's face.

Then Samantha's.

Then Alex.

"Let's make it more interesting."

Behind him, dozens of screens flickered.

Each showing a different angle.

A different perspective.

A different version of reality.

And in every single one…

The same shadow stood behind them.

Watching.

Waiting.

Smiling.

The game had begun.
