Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: What We Hide

That evening Sam and Alex met on the rooftop, and Alex didn't tell her.

Not yet.

He had the chance.

More than once.

The words sat at the edge of his mind heavy, urgent, necessary.

But every time he looked at Samantha…

He stopped.

Because the moment he told her

Everything would change.

So instead…

He did something else At noon, Samantha found a message waiting for her.

"Meet me at the rooftop. 7PM."

No explanation.

No context.

Just that

When she arrived

She paused.

The rooftop had been transformed.

Soft lights hung along the edges, glowing gently against the night sky. A small table sat at the center, set simply but carefully. The city lights stretched endlessly beyond them, painting the background in gold and silver.

And there

Alex stood.

Waiting.

Samantha blinked.

"…You did all this?"

Alex smiled.

"Maybe."

She stepped closer, taking it in.

"This isn't your usual style."

"Maybe I'm trying something new."

She raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…I like it."

They sat.

Talked.

Laughed.

For a while

It felt normal.

Easy.

Like nothing else existed beyond that rooftop.

But beneath it

Alex's thoughts never stopped moving.

His father.

Samantha.

He watched her as she spoke.

The way she smiled.

The way she thought before answering.

And for a moment

He hated the situation.

Because whatever this was…

Whatever was coming…

He knew it would reach her eventually.

"Hey," Samantha said softly.

He blinked.

"…Yeah?"

"You drifted off."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Just thinking."

"About?"

He hesitated.

Then shook his head.

"Nothing important."

Samantha studied him for a moment.

Like she didn't fully believe that.

But she let it go.

For now.

"Thank you for this," she said quietly.

Alex looked at her.

"For what?"

"This," she gestured lightly around them. "It's… nice."

He smiled.

"You deserve nice things."

There was a pause.

Then Samantha said

"You're doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Deflecting."

Alex laughed softly.

"Am I that obvious?"

"A little."

Their eyes met.

And just like that

The distance between them disappeared again.

This time

It wasn't hesitant.

It wasn't uncertain.

It was familiar.

They leaned in.

Closer.

Slower.

When their lips met

It lingered.

Longer than before.

Warmer.

Deeper.

Samantha's hand rested lightly against his chest.

Alex's fingers brushed against her arm, pulling her just a little closer.

Time blurred.

The world faded.

And for that moment

Nothing else mattered.

When they finally pulled back, their foreheads rested together.

Breathing slightly uneven.

"…You're distracting," Samantha murmured.

Alex smiled.

"Good."

They stayed there for a while.

Talking.

Laughing.

Closing the space between them again and again.

But even in that warmth

Alex made a silent decision.

Not yet.

Meanwhile…

Chloe had noticed.

Not the date.

Not the rooftop.

But Samantha.

The way her attention shifted.

The way her eyes followed someone else lately.

Esther.

It didn't sit right with her.

So one afternoon

Chloe followed.

She wasn't as subtle as Samantha.

But she didn't need to be.

She watched from a distance as Samantha moved carefully, deliberately, tracking Esther's movements across campus.

Waiting.

Observing.

"…What are you doing?" Chloe muttered under her breath.

Later

She didn't wait.

She confronted her.

Samantha had just closed her laptop when Chloe stepped in front of her.

Arms crossed.

Expression serious.

"Alright," Chloe said. "What's going on?"

Samantha looked up.

Calm.

Too calm.

"…What do you mean?"

"Don't do that," Chloe replied. "You've been watching Esther like she's about to commit a crime."

Samantha didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

Chloe's eyes narrowed.

"…Sam."

A pause.

Then

Samantha exhaled slowly.

"I think something's wrong."

That changed the tone instantly.

Chloe uncrossed her arms slightly.

"…Explain."

Samantha leaned back.

Thinking.

Choosing her words carefully.

"I don't trust her," she said.

Chloe frowned.

"That's not new."

"It's more than that."

Samantha looked at her directly now.

Focused.

Serious.

"I think she's hiding something. Something big."

Chloe's expression shifted.

"…Like what?"

Samantha hesitated.

Then said it.

"I think she might be working for an organization."

Silence.

"What kind of organization?" Chloe asked slowly.

Samantha's eyes didn't leave hers.

"…A dangerous one."

Another pause.

Then

"Phantom."

The name hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unfamiliar.

But serious.

Chloe blinked.

"…You're serious?"

"Yes."

Chloe stepped back slightly.

Processing.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked.

Her voice sharper now.

Samantha didn't hesitate.

"Because of you."

That hit.

Chloe frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Samantha stood.

Stepped closer.

"You act first," she said calmly. "You don't always think things through when you're angry."

Chloe's expression hardened slightly.

"I do think."

"You do," Samantha said. "But not when it matters most."

Silence.

That stung.

"…So you didn't trust me," Chloe said quietly.

Samantha shook her head.

"It's not that."

She softened slightly.

"I trust you to fight," she said.

"But I need you to think."

Another pause.

Chloe looked away.

Jaw tight.

Because deep down

She knew it was true.

"…I would've confronted her," Chloe admitted.

"Yes," Samantha said.

"And that's exactly what we can't do right now."

Chloe exhaled slowly.

Frustration fading.

Replacing itself with understanding.

"…So what's the plan?" she asked.

Samantha's expression shifted again.

Calm.

Focused.

Strategic.

"We watch," she said.

"We wait."

"We learn everything we can."

Chloe nodded slowly.

"…And then?"

Samantha's eyes darkened slightly.

"…Then we act."

And just like that

The game changed again.

Because now

Samantha wasn't just reacting anymore.

She was planning.
