Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Yeti

Alex stared up at the cavern's vaulted ceiling, momentarily ignoring the monster's deafening roars. The vibrations from the impacts were causing fractures in the ancient ice to spread above their heads like a deadly spiderweb.

"It's not the giant ape I'm worried about, it's those cracks," Alex commented, keeping his eyes glued to the jagged stalactites threatening to break loose. "I don't really feel like getting squashed into a giant popsicle."

Valentina, who was leaning back in the saddle of her Mecha-beast right next to him, shot him a sideways glance. Despite the chaos and imminent danger surrounding them, a small, mischievous smile played on her lips.

"Popsicles are pretty fun to lick," Val purred, her tone subtle but unmistakably flirtatious, leaving the phrase hanging in the freezing air.

Alex slowly turned his head toward her and raised an eyebrow, completely thrown off. Did he seriously just hear a sexual innuendo in the middle of a disaster zone? He opened his mouth to reply, but the roar of heavy artillery dragged him right back to reality.

A few yards away, the Hooligang was firing blindly like a bunch of trigger-happy morons. Billy and his goons were emptying their blasters with zero strategy, launching minor explosives and ice projectiles that only managed to piss the Yeti off even more. Worse still, since it was an elemental beast, the monster simply absorbed every single impact, increasing its muscle mass and size at a terrifying rate.

Suddenly, the cave let out a deep, structural groan that didn't come from the beast, but from the cavern itself.

"Watch out!" Eli Shane's voice echoed from across the theater.

The weakest part of the entrance finally gave way. Tons of solid ice and rubble came crashing down with an apocalyptic roar, kicking up a massive curtain of frost and dust. When the visibility cleared, reality hit them like a freight train: the exit was completely blocked by an impenetrable wall of debris.

They were trapped. The Shane Gang, the Hooligan idiots, Alex, Valentina, and a thoroughly enraged Cave Yeti.

Alex coughed, dusting the powder off his face, and looked over at Billy, who was still screaming useless orders at his gang as they backed away in terror.

"Hey, Val... is this Billy guy naturally this stupid?" Alex asked, crossing his arms and not losing an ounce of his cool. "Are you seriously telling me this guy worked for Dr. Blakk at some point?"

Valentina let out a heavy sigh of pure mental exhaustion and started rubbing her temples, as if Billy's mere existence was giving her a physical migraine.

"I don't know. I genuinely don't remember; low-level mercenaries don't usually last long in my files," Val replied, narrowing her eyes as she watched the Yeti absorb another stray shot and grow a few more inches. "But yes, he is completely incompetent. Has the idiot not noticed that attacking it only makes it bigger?"

The Yeti, now a monstrous titan, unleashed a bellow that rattled their Mecha-beasts, locking its glowing eyes directly on the two Commanders.

"Right, well then... what's the plan?" Alex said, his joking tone vanishing as he slipped into his trademark tactical coldness. "Should we take this thing down ourselves before these idiots get us all killed?"

Valentina drew her custom blaster with a lethal flick of her wrist, checking the chamber. "Got any bright ideas on how to beat a living mountain?" she challenged, giving him an expectant look.

Alex smirked, his dark eyes gleaming with that arrogant confidence that defined him on the battlefield. "I can think of at least three different ways to immobilize it," Alex replied, patting the handlebars of his Tiger. "And in my playbook, immobilizing a target that size is just as good as beating it. Ready for the show?"

"Let's use Lavalynx slugs! We'll bury that ape in the ice!" Alex yelled, peeling away from Valentina and gunning his Bengal Tiger to flank the monster.

Catching onto the strategy instantly, Val whipped her mechanical horse around. As the two Commanders circled the colossal Yeti at top speed, creating a dizzying ring of confusion, they simultaneously loaded a Lavalynx into their respective weapons.

They fired in perfect sync. The magma projectiles didn't hit the beast; they struck the ground right at its feet. The cavern's ancient ice, already compromised by the tremors, instantly gave way to the extreme heat of the concentrated lava pools.

The Yeti let out a roar of surprise as the floor vanished beneath its weight. It crashed heavily into the deep, smoking crater. Before it could even react, the melted water surrounding it flash-froze due to the cavern's natural freezing temperatures, trapping the monster from the waist down in a block of solid ice.

The beast thrashed wildly, snarling and trying to break free, but the thick blocks of refrozen ice kept it firmly pinned in place.

Alex skidded his Mecha-beast to a halt, lowered his blaster, and let out a triumphant whistle. "See, Val? Told you that monkey wouldn't be a problem," Alex bragged, leaning his weight casually over his handlebars.

Valentina braked next to him, shaking a few drops of water off her uniform with a look of pure skepticism. "Please... I saw you looking pretty worried five minutes ago when it almost flattened you," she countered, raising an ironic eyebrow.

The Commanders' relaxed banter was abruptly cut short by the unmistakable high-pitched whistle of a slug being fired from the other side of the room.

CRASH!

A Ramstone slug hit the Yeti dead-on mid-transformation. The kinetic impact shattered the ice prison into a million pieces. And, exactly as expected, the beast absorbed the kinetic force, grew another ten feet, and broke free from its trap with a wall-shaking roar.

Alex whipped his head around so fast he almost gave himself whiplash. He tracked the source of the shot, his dark eyes locking onto Billy, who was still holding his smoking blaster with a smug, arrogant grin.

Alex didn't think twice. He launched his Mecha-beast like a heat-seeking missile, tearing across the ruined theater until he slammed on the brakes mere inches from the gang leader's kneecaps. He leaped off his Tiger and got right in his face.

"What the hell is wrong with you?! Do you have sawdust for brains?!" Alex roared, invading his personal space, absolutely livid. "It was already immobilized! Why the hell did you free it?!"

Billy took a step back, intimidated by the Blakk officer's rage, but his absurd ego forced him to defend himself. "Why do you assume it's my fault?!" Billy stammered, pointing his blaster defensively. "I was just trying to land the finishing blow!"

Alex dragged a hand down his face, looking at the kid with genuine, profound pity. He simply couldn't believe anyone could be this stupid. It was a medical miracle this guy remembered how to breathe.

"Fighting among ourselves isn't going to solve anything right now," Trixie intervened reluctantly, stepping up with her weapon raised, her eyes never leaving the Yeti, which was now ripping massive chunks of ice from the floor to use as projectiles. "We need to figure out how to actually beat it and get out of here."

Eli Shane stood beside his friend. His posture was steady, but the glare he shot Alex was loaded with undisguised hostility. "Trixie's right. And as much as I hate the idea of us working together... it's the only way we're making it out of this cave alive," Eli said, measuring every word.

Alex caught the kid's tense tone and let out a short laugh, crossing his arms. "Come on, fearless leader, are you still holding a grudge? I knocked you out with a Tazerling a few days ago, I didn't cut off your arm. Don't be so petty, 'hero,'" Alex mocked, brushing off his recent betrayal at the mall like it was nothing.

Before Eli could snap back, a trembling voice piped up from behind some rubble. "The... the only way to beat an enraged Cave Yeti is with a Slyren slug!" squeaked the Molenoid projectionist, still shaking after nearly being crushed. "Its song is the only thing that can put them to sleep!"

Alex glanced at the Molenoid for a second, then shook his head, a calculating smirk forming on his lips. "Not necessary. I don't have a Slyren on me, but I've got a much better plan," Alex announced. He turned his head and shot Billy a death glare. "A plan that I'm kindly asking certain idiots not to ruin this time."

Without waiting for approval, Alex pivoted toward the center of the room and cupped his hands over his mouth to amplify his voice. "Hey, Val! How are you holding up over there?!" Alex yelled, leaning over to check the action.

On the other side of the theater, the scene was absolute pandemonium. Valentina was sprinting desperately through the rubble, dodging fridge-sized blocks of ice and vaulting over the remains of the concession stand while the colossal Yeti chased her down, destroying everything in its path.

"How do you think I'm holding up?! You left me alone to fight a mutant ape!" Val screamed back, panting heavily as she slid under a fallen pillar right before the Yeti's fist smashed it to dust.

"You're doing great, keep it up!" Alex cheered from a safe distance, giving her a thumbs-up to buy time to set up his strategy.

"I'M DOING EVERYTHING AND I'M GOING TO KILL YOU WHEN I'M DONE WITH THIS!" Val roared, her eyes bloodshot with pure corporate fury, firing a Phosphoro slug as a flashbang to buy herself a few extra yards.

"Anyway, the plan is simple," Alex announced, raising his voice to be heard over the earth-shattering roars. "We're doing a combo shot. Everyone together, same time, same target, so the kinetic impact is devastating enough to melt Mr. Icy Personality over there before he wrecks the whole place."

Trixie crossed her arms, glaring at him. Just the thought of coordinating with this Blakk officer again made her stomach turn. "What kind of combo shot exactly?" the redhead asked suspiciously. "This better not be another trap."

"Basic physics, Cherry. A thermal death trap," Alex explained, using his hands to illustrate the concept. "We use Tornadox and Phosphoro slugs.

"The Tornadoxes will create a closed vacuum cyclone that will suffocate the Yeti and trap it in the center. The Phosphoros will illuminate and superheat the air, but we need a lethal core..."

Alex turned his head and pointed dead at Eli. "That's where you come in, Shane. Use your Infurnus slug. Word on the street is that little beast of yours packs some serious heat. If we fire it right into the eye of the cyclone, the tornado's oxygen will feed the flames, and we'll create a spinning inferno that will melt that ape in seconds."

Eli looked down at his Infurnus (Burpy), who was already bouncing on his shoulder, ready for action. The young hero then locked his blue eyes on Alex, his brow deeply furrowed. "Just this once, we'll work together again to save everyone," Eli conceded, his voice hard and uncompromising. "But let's get one thing straight: I haven't forgotten what you pulled at the mall."

Alex clutched a hand to his chest in mock offense, a sarcastic grin plastered across his face. "Ouch... And here I thought we were going to be besties after this. You're breaking my heart, leader."

"Hey, hold on a second!" Billy interrupted, stomping his foot with childish indignation. "Why the hell should my gang and I work with the stupid Shane Gang?! We're the heroes here, not them!"

Alex's mocking smirk vanished in a millisecond. All the fake friendliness evaporated, revealing the lethal, ruthless Commander of Blakk Industries underneath.

In the blink of an eye, Alex closed the distance, grabbed Billy by the collar of his black jacket, and pulled him in until their noses were almost touching.

"I'll tell you exactly why you're going to work with them, trash," Alex whispered, his voice so dangerously cold it made all the color drain from the gang banger's face. "Because if you don't, I will break every bone in your arms, rip that blaster out of your hands, and fire your damn slugs myself. Are we crystal clear, or do you need me to draw you a picture?"

Billy, trembling and breaking out in a cold sweat, nodded frantically. Alex released him with utter disdain, letting him stumble back onto his own two feet.

"Positions!" Alex barked, spinning back to the group.

The metallic clack-clack of chambers opening and closing filled the air. Alex pulled a vial from his bandolier and loaded a Tornadox from his own arsenal. Eli nodded to Burpy, who leaped determinately into his blaster's barrel.

Trixie, Kord, Pronto, and the terrified members of the Hooligang mixed their ammo between Tornadox and Phosphoro slugs.

An entire arsenal, all aimed at a single point. All they needed was the bait.

Alex stepped forward, cupped his hands like a megaphone, and screamed at the top of his lungs across the ruined theater. "HEY, VALENTINA! RUN OVER HERE! WE'VE GOT THE PLAN READY!"

In the distance, emerging from a thick cloud of dust and debris, the Intelligence Commander appeared. Valentina was sprinting for her life at Olympic speeds, hurdling over chunks of ice as the Yeti's colossal, monstrous hand smashed into the floor mere inches behind her heels.

Hearing Alex's shout and seeing the firing squad of blasters pointed in her direction, Valentina pushed herself even faster.

"YOU BETTER NOT ROAST ME, ALEX!" Val screamed at the top of her lungs as she sprinted desperately toward the firing line. "BECAUSE IF YOU SINGE A SINGLE HAIR ON MY HEAD, I WILL THROW YOU INTO A MAGMA LAKE MYSELF!"

"Just run and duck when I tell you!" Alex yelled back, narrowing his eyes as he calculated the distance, timing, and speed of the monster bearing down on her.

The massive Yeti roared, raising both of its icy fists high into the air, ready to flatten the Commander into the ground. It was exactly where they wanted it.
