"Lord Fermillion. I insist on you finding proper hunters to deal with this issue." Keisuke said trying to reason with me.
He had followed me into my study and stood at the edge of the room as I wrote instructions and made plans for the zone raid. It was not even dawn yet, but there was no sleeping for me. The appearance of a Miasma zone couldn't have been better timing! Had I not overheard the rude night call, Keisuke would have likely dealt with the situation himself. After all, it was the law that every Lord is to deal with any Miasma Zone or dungeon that appears in their territory as soon as possible.
There was a slight tremble in Keisuke's voice and his posture was weaker than normal for him. While the situation was happening, I was filled with anticipation, excitement and slight annoyance at his caution. Looking back though, I was probably too hard on him. After all, Keisuke didn't know how strong and capable I was, hell, I wasn't even sure at this point in time. That's why I wanted to clear the Miasma zone myself. It was to test my new abilities.
"I appreciate your concern Keisuke, but this is something I can deal with."
Keisuke gave me a look and folded his arms in front of himself.
"You're not a hunter, Lord Fermillion."
"Not yet. But I will be, besides that, I won't be alone. I'll be taking William with me. If things get too dangerous, he'll be the first to know." I explained, failing to mention my own dormant hunting instincts.
"Miasma zones are a dangerous thing. Your life is important my Lord, not because you're special, but because you have so many people relying on you."
"That's the thing Keisuke. I don't think anyone relies on me, and if they do, they really don't need to."
"I'm not sure it's so much they need you as it is that they want you. The servants trust you now. Your mother and sisters lost a husband and father. I know you've been fighting them, but if you were to die in such a pathetic way, I'm sure it would bother them to their core."
"I'm going Keisuke! That's final! I'll come back! I promise."
Keisuke stood silent, then let out a slow forced sigh. I wanted to call him a coward, unloyal, all sorts of things that he didn't deserve, but his concern looked too genuine when I tried to make eye contact, so keeping eye contact with him– it just felt weighty. It's clear nothing I said would make him feel any better, so I just needed to prove myself and come back.
"Who is to succeed you in the event of your demise?" He asked his voice barely above a whisper.
He really was taking this a lot more seriously than he needed to, but I can't blame him. People die trying to take on Miasma Zones and Dungeons all the time.
"Kate." I answered.
"Not Joshua?" he asked.
"No, because Joshua is coming with me." I said firmly.
"Very well. I'll leave you to your vices then my Lord." he said nodding his head.
He then left the room leaving me very frustrated and very tired. After all, I hadn't gotten any sleep because I'd fucked Liza so late into the night. If I wasn't up this late though, I would have missed that late night call and Keisuke would have taken care of the situation behind my back. That isn't to say that Keisuke would have intentionally did something I would have disapproved of, but there was a regular process when it came to Miasma zones, and there's no doubt Keisuke knew it.
Normally you were supposed to pay out a bounty to welcome any hunting parties to try and clear it out, but there were all sorts of goods to be found in Miasma zones that could be sold for large sums of money. The experience gained from the monsters in those zones was also nothing to scoff at, and I was getting antsy for some action.
When I returned to my room I found Liza still asleep in my bed. I laid beside her and nuzzled my head into her bosom. She started to stir a bit– then went still again. Her soft warm body was tantalizing, it was the kind of trap a weak man could easily fall for and get lost in for his entire lifetime. After a few more minutes– probably about fifteen of twenty of them, she started to stir again and this time opened her eyes.
Her eyes widened and she startled back like she had done something unforgivable. I sat up and she pulled the blankets up to cover herself.
"Lord Fermillion! I'm sorry– I didn't mean to–!"
"Sleeping in bed with me every so often is fine with me."
"It isn't proper or right though. As a maid, I should be gone before morning light just in case someone comes in."
"I appreciate your professionalism."
I crawled over and brushed hair away from her face with two fingers. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
"Thank you Lord Wayne… for last night. It's because of you I was able to have a good first experience."
"First of many. You can go if you want to."
"I think it would be best, but maybe next time… I'll stay just a bit longer." She said right before sighing.
The next moment, she was climbing out of the bed and redressing herself. She gave me one last look before she exited out the door with a smile. I forced myself to lay in my bed and shut my eyes in an effort to get some rest before heading out with William and Joshua to take care of the Miasma zone.
A few hours later, I was woken up by Heather for the regular morning routine. With a determined stride, I found Joshua, told Beth to get him ready for travel, and then sought out William to ask for his assistance. William didn't agree immediately, but didn't even attempt to reject the request. It looked like it was something mildly interesting to him, kind of like everything new that I was doing was mildly interesting.
In a matter of a few hours, we were on horses headed north-east in the direction the miasma zone was reported. It was supposedly a valley type area that the Miasma zone had appeared in, and like other Miasma zones, animals were fleeing from that location to find safer places.
When the zone finally came into view a wave of memories hit me all at once. It was a little cathartic for me being able to see one after so long, but for William, he looked a little nervous– Joshua looked outright scared, but not terrified.
"It's been awhile." William stated.
"Since you last cleared a Miasma zone?" I asked.
"Yeah. I remember this smell, and the pressure in the air." He answered.
"How strong of a Miasma zone can you handle?" I inquired.
"I'm not sure. Maybe a knight rank?" William suggested.
"Ah. That's pretty good from what I understand."
"How does… how does a knight rank measure to the others Wayne?" Joshua asked with a slight quiver.
"Well there are eight ranks and knight measures at number five. The hardest, at number eight, is God Rank, and the easiest one at number one is Beginner Rank."
"How high is this one?" Joshua asked.
"I don't know for sure… but this amount of pressure makes me guess that it's probably low guard rank."
"I'm surprised you know that." William remarked.
"Let's just get in and see if we can clear it. Once we know how difficult it actually is we can set up a proper clearing campaign"
"Alright. Lead the way."
We found the closest tree we could and tied the horses to it, because anyone who's had any experience clearing a miasma zone or dungeon knows horses are not built for the kinds of dangers hidden in these places. Horses were strong, they were fast, but they didn't have the ability to strike back, only to run.
There were horses that were trained for Miasma zones and dungeons, horses that had many enchantments cast on them and that were fitted with expensive adornments and armor, but the ones we brought with us weren't that kind. They were the kind you took an afternoon trip with. They were the kind that were quite cheap, the kind that just about everyone with money had.
If I had to describe what a Miasma zone looked like, it would be this. It was an area with a fog over it, sometimes thin and sometimes thick. The fog always had a tint to it, and this one was green. Eerie noises would come out of the zone in echoes, and there was a chill in the air that became dense the closer you got to it.
Depending on the rank of the zone, it could be hard to breathe, that's why it was important to build up your stamina if you planned to be a hunter. Running for extended periods of time for long distances was pretty effective for that. That was one of the perks of my territory in particular. It was mostly flat, so I didn't have the issue of having to train on a lot of bad inclines and depressions.
The first thing we ran into was a black Hemiptera that immediately saw us as a threat. William went into defense mode, but as for me, I went for it. I knew what these things were and was ready to get my hands dirty. With a slash and a dodge, a block and a few stabs, the hemiptera fell to the ground, its green blood splattered on the ground.
"That was a bit brash." William remarked.
"Eh, this wasn't really a problem though." I responded.
"Alright. Just don't approach the next one so quickly. Some monsters are hard to tell just how dangerous they are."
"Thanks for the advice…" I said trying to mask my annoyance as much as I could.
The monster I just killed was called an Eshkalrak. The things were common for low guard rank Zones, so we probably guessed its rank correctly. Still, it was better to do some more exploring before we decided for sure. As we pushed further in, we ran into more Eshkalraks. I took care of some of them, and William took care of others. It wasn't until towards the end of the day that Joshua got to help William kill one.
I really wanted to be the one to help Joshua take one on, but William insisted on me staying out of it. At the time I thought William was annoyed by my enjoyment of the combat, but I would later find out it was for other reasons. I hadn't really known a whole lot about who William was at the time, so all I could do was guess based on my previous interactions with him.
Once our light started to fade out, a decision was made to turn back. I would have stayed in the zone until it was clear, but William wouldn't turn back without me, and I really couldn't let Joshua go back alone. Joshua didn't have the same experience as me or William, so we made our way out of the zone and back to the horses. When we got to the manor and stepped back inside, I saw Keisuke let out a sigh of relief and horror. We were speckled in dirt and blood, so his reaction was pretty warranted.
"See? I made it back safe and sound." I exclaimed.
"Did you at least try to hold him back William?" Keisuke asked him.
"Tch! Don't get mad at me! I tried to keep him away from harm, but he wouldn't stop rushing in!" William snapped.
Is William mad at me? Keisuke gave me a murderous gaze. You two need to back the fuck off! I can take care of myself just fine! Fuck. I keep forgetting I'm just some useless Lord who took a random interest in Hunting. If only I could make them understand!
"I have to train on something! You can't get experience by swinging at the air all day Keisuke!"
Keisuke rolled his eyes and folded his arms.
"Do you want me to prepare your things for bed?" Keisuke asked.
"You can tell Heather to get those things ready."
It wasn't until I was in bed after a good bath that my body broke down. I may have pushed myself a little too much too early. This body wasn't used to Zone clearing, and this was still my first zone in this timeline. I fell asleep quicker than I planned to and woke up feeling like I had done something horribly wrong to myself. The soreness I felt was enough to tell me that yeah, I probably pushed it way too hard yesterday, and I probably would have pushed even harder if William wasn't there to hold me back.
The next day was all about planning and supply gathering. Since it was a low guard rank zone, we would probably spend about 4-10 days clearing it at the level we were at. If we were stronger, it would take about a day. The whole time Keisuke and William tried to talk me out of it to no avail. It had been years since I was able to clear out a zone as easy as this one, despite my aching muscles and shaking nerves.
I had a new fix for that though, something I never could have had in my old life. That fix was a maid named Liza sucking my cock while I sat in my office. It really was a lot easier to get her to do it than I even planned for. She wasn't eager, but she certainly wasn't casual about it either. The sight of her trying to hold back a smile as she swept her lips along my shaft was a tickling sight to say the least.
"Make sure you cum on my face, Lord Wayne." She instructed.
"Won't it get in your hair?"
"So?"
"Isn't it really hard to get it out of your hair?"
"So?"
Liza was definitely different from any other girl I'd met. Even Sybil, as slutty as she was, always threw a fit anytime Seiji got cum in her hair. Liza really was raised different. Liza really was a cut above other girls. Maybe I need to start thinking of ways I can grow closer to her and ways I can make more use of her. I wonder if she would be any good at what Keisuke does… something like a head maid. If nothing else, I definitely need to be paying her more.
I didn't have time to argue with her because she pushed me to the edge, so as requested, I blasted her face with white substance, and like I predicted, no small amount ended up in her hair. I groaned.
"See? I told you it would get in your hair!"
"And I told you it was what I wanted."
"Liza. You're different. In a good way."
"I just want to do a good job and please my Lord. I do wonder why you decided to be a hunter though. From what I know, Lords don't do that kind of thing."
"You're not wrong. I'm a special case I suppose, but I'm not the only one even within this kingdom."
"You're not?"
"No. There's a few others I know of. For one, there's a lot of Hunters among the Armrests, Lewells and Haberlys. In fact, some of them are commissioned by the crown themselves for special hunting forces. All the ones who aren't end up in the royal army which requires much of the same skills as hunters."
"What would you say the difference is between hunters and soldiers?" Liza pressed.
"Their ability to preserve materials and assess artifacts. It's pretty much believed that only commoners can be hunters, but I found some really old books that suggest otherwise."
"You did?"
"Yeah. There's a personal account of someone who lived three hundred years ago and they just so happened to be a lesser known member of the Nomarion family. His name was Andrew Nomarion, and he was a third cousin of the reigning king at the time. From that account alone I was able to piece together rumored accounts of other nobles that may have been hunters.
"This is all to say, I'm pretty sure the popular belief that nobles can't be hunters is one rooted in some indisputable arguments rather than biological fact. Nobles just simply don't have the same physical work ethic that commoners do, and that alone makes it difficult for them to train to be proper hunters. But that's more of a recent development as the lifestyles of Nobles have gotten cozier in the last century."
"So you trained based on a hunch?"
"Yeah. I think it's more than a hunch though at this point."
"But why put yourself in so much danger?"
"The excitement for one thing. Another thing is to become stronger. Hunters tend to have status and connections that are impossible to get otherwise. You can surround yourself with more powerful people when you know how to invest into them, that's why it's more popular to just sponsor commoners to be hunters rather than do the work yourself. But for me, I'd rather just do the work myself. It just feels better to me that way."
Liza wiped her face with a handkerchief then looked at me with a glowing respect I wasn't used to seeing.
"I think it's admirable you want to work so hard, Lord Wayne. I think I understand you more now, and if you need me to help you in any way I will." she assured me. I smiled.
"Just being able to get off was already a big help. Don't get too lonely. We're going to go back in, and this time, we're going to try and clear it. It may take us a couple of days so hang tight until I get back." I explained. Liza gave me a nod.
"Be careful. I'm starting to like taking care of your special needs very much, Lord Wayne. I'll be sure to serve you well when you return."
"I do have one request." I mentioned.
"What would that be?" she asked curious what kind of request I would have for her.
"Could you train the other girls while I'm gone? For sexual needs I mean."
"Train them?" she asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yes. I want to get a chance to fuck all my maids when I get back, so if you need someone for them to practice on, just use Jay and Marv."
"I'm sure they'll cooperate." she added.
"I'll leave special instructions for Keisuke to make sure that they do."
