Chapter 20 - What Remains

The observatory was quiet. Too quiet.

Dust hung in the air, shimmering faintly in the last rays of the sun. Broken walls, shattered equipment, and scorched ground told the story of what had just happened. Seven girls lay scattered across the floor, their GeneShift forms faded but their bodies bruised, bloodied, and trembling.

Ava was the first to move. Slowly, painfully, she pushed herself to her knees. Her crystalline armor had cracked in multiple places, leaving jagged shards digging into her skin. She looked up, wide-eyed.

"He… he picked me first," she whispered. Her voice broke. "He said I was the weakest… and I"

Nyra, still on the ground a few feet away, clenched her fists. Her psychic field had collapsed completely. Her golden eyes flickered faintly with residual energy, but her lips were pressed tight, holding back panic.

"It wasn't just you, Ava," Nyra said softly. "He… he can stop any of us at any time."

Luna sat against the wall, her speed form flickering weakly. She hugged her knees. "We can't even touch him. I'm… I'm not fast enough. Nothing we tried worked."

Mira sat beside her, head bowed. Golden energy still lingered faintly on her hands, but it was nothing. "We trained… we thought we were ready. And we… we lost."

The words hung in the room like a heavy weight.

Riven stood in the middle, her transformation gone, but the bruises on her face and the blood at the corner of her mouth were reminders of the raw force they had faced. She didn't speak. She just looked at each of them, her jaw tight, eyes dark. The silence from her was worse than shouting.

Ava whimpered softly. "What… what do we do now? We can't beat him. He… he's unstoppable."

Nyra shook her head, trying to regain composure. "We don't know that. We don't know the limits yet."

"Limits?" Ava laughed bitterly, a trembling, hollow sound. "We already hit them. He proved it. We're nothing. We're… not ready."

Riven finally moved. Her voice was calm, but carried the weight of command. "We survived. Barely. But we're still here. That means we can do more."

Luna looked up at her, eyes wide. "Do more? Riven, we just got thrown across the room. How do you expect us to do more?"

Riven stepped closer to them. Her bruised body, battered and tired, seemed smaller, but the intensity in her eyes was sharper than ever.

"We train," she said simply. "We get stronger. And we find a way to unlock every single form this GeneShift can give us. Every last one. And then… we fight back."

Nyra finally spoke, voice steady. "The GeneShift… it's not finished. It's evolving. There are forms we haven't even touched. Forms that could" She paused, swallowing hard. "…forms that could stop him."

Mira's eyes widened. "Stop him? You mean, like, actually?"

Nyra nodded. "But only if we learn control… synchronization… and we evolve faster than it unlocks by itself."

Ava looked between them, fear and determination clashing on her face. "So… we have to risk our lives over and over just to unlock new forms?"

Riven's gaze softened slightly, but her voice didn't waver. "Yes. Because if we don't, we die. And if we die… then the world loses its chance to fight back."

Luna gripped her knees tighter, whispering, "We can do that?"

Riven knelt in front of her. "We will do that. All of us. Together."

The room was silent again. But this time, it was different. It wasn't heavy with defeat. It was heavy with determination.

Nyra's bracelet pulsed faintly once more. "If we evolve… we won't be caught off guard again. We'll be ready for him next time."

Ava clenched her fists. "Next time… we'll win."

Riven's eyes darkened with focus. "Not maybe. Not hopefully. Next time, we win."

The observatory, broken and scarred, felt different. The battle had taken everything from them energy, pride, innocence but it had also left them one thing: clarity.

They were no longer just seven girls with powers. They were survivors. Warriors in training. And they had a purpose now.

Riven stood in the center of the room, looking at the group. "Starting tomorrow… the real training begins. We don't just fight. We evolve. We unlock every form. And we become stronger… faster… better. So that next time…"

Her voice dropped to a whisper, but it carried like steel.

"…we don't lose."

Outside, the wind shifted. Somewhere distant, a faint red glow pulsed in the shadows.

Rooder had already noted their survival. And he would be back.

But this time, the girls weren't just waiting to react.

This time… they were planning to fight back.
