With the roar of war echoing throughout the city, the civilians remaining safe in the shelters prayed that whoever won would spare them and keep them out of harm's way.
Sasori stood atop the roof of an old inn, his Suna robes billowing heavily. His reddish-brown eyes did not stray from the reptilian figure emerging from the ruins of an alley: Orochimaru.
"Art, Orochimaru... that is what these puppets are. If you fall today, you will end up as one forever," Sasori said, his voice icy but charged with absolute determination.
Orochimaru let out a sibilant laugh the sound of a real snake. Sasori couldn't tell if his opponent had already become one himself.
"They seem interesting, but they aren't all that. In the end, they don't use 100% of their power while dead. What's the point of having them?" Orochimaru said, eyeing the details of the puppets.
Sasori didn't respond with more words. His left hand a dark wooden prosthesis with chakra seals engraved on the joints creaked as it closed.
His right hand, of flesh and bone, performed a single activation seal that made the air around him vibrate.
"Aka Secret Technique: Juudan no Gishiki (Red Secret Technique: Ritual of the Ten)," Sasori sentenced.
Ten storage scrolls unfurled in a perfect fan around him, floating on invisible chakra threads. In ten explosions of white smoke, Sasori's Collection of Human Puppets appeared, surrounding Orochimaru in a decagon formation.
Orochimaru licked his lips, his gaze jumping from one puppet to another with a macabre, scientific curiosity.
"Impressive. I recognize those two... quite skilled. A pity they died in the previous battle."
"Indeed. Although they are more useful as puppets. They will help me finish you."
The battle erupted with a coordinated violence that defied human perception. Sasori moved his fingers with a mastery that surpassed anything Orochimaru had ever faced before.
The two Uchiha puppets simultaneously launched a Katon: Gōkaryū no Jutsu (Fire Style: Great Dragon Fire Jutsu). Both dragons roared through the alley with the force of an erupting volcano, turning the air into an oven.
Orochimaru, trapped in the center, performed hand seals at blinding speed, his eyes glowing with a maniacal light.
"Doton: Doryūheki!"
A wall of earth rose to block the fire, but Sasori had already anticipated the move.
Another of his puppets a former Iwa ninja charged its arm with a rock spear and pierced through the earth wall like a climber, seeking Orochimaru's heart with a stone thrust.
The Sannin was forced to dislocate his own shoulders to slide across the ground like a snake, avoiding the blow by millimeters while the air behind him was pushed back by the force of the impact.
Seeing Orochimaru pull away, only one word came to Sasori's mind: "cockroach."
Maintaining ten active chakra threads while moving to position himself better was not something just any ninja could do. However, with Sasori's new hand, it was much easier for him.
From a distance, Orochimaru reset his joints with a single shrug, returning them to their normal shape. But what Sasori saw next would leave him traumatized for the rest of his life.
Orochimaru opened his mouth as wide as possible to begin drawing the Kusanagi from his throat. It was a quick but utterly disgusting process that Sasori did not hesitate to interrupt.
Launching the Iwa ninja with arms shaped into earth spear, he attacked, but Orochimaru wasn't a Sannin in title alone.
With his Kusanagi, he intercepted the
puppet and then sent it flying with a kick.
This didn't seem to matter to Sasori, as in those few seconds, he had already brought the other nine puppets to surround Orochimaru. The Sannin only smiled, bit his finger, and touched the ground with both hands.
With explosions of smoke, five massive snakes lunged in all directions toward the puppets. Sasori, not letting them get close, again used both Uchihas to burn the snakes alive.
However, to Sasori's surprise, when he looked at Orochimaru again, the Sannin still had his hands on the ground.
Suddenly, Sasori felt the earth tremble.
"Jaws of the Great Devourer!" Orochimaru shouted.
The ground beneath Sasori didn't just shake; it opened completely as if the earth itself were hungry. A white snake of colossal dimensions emerged from the depths of the subsoil.
Sasori, caught off guard, was not fast enough to perform a full Shunshin. The beast's jaws closed over him, swallowing the redhead in a whirlwind of scales, mud, and darkness.
Orochimaru watched with cold satisfaction as his snake swallowed heavily.
"Enjoy your meal," Orochimaru said, moving toward the puppets that had fallen to the ground after losing the puppeteer controlling them.
But inside the snake stomach, Sasori had not given up. In absolute darkness, surrounded by gastric acids that began to corrode his cloak and burn his skin, Sasori activated the secret mechanism of his new hand. He wasn't going to die in the dark; he had goals and things to do.
From the joints of his wooden hand, small circular saws imbued with wind-natured chakra emerged, rotating at speeds that sliced through the fluids.
Sasori began to spin on his own axis, becoming a whirlwind of high-frequency cuts. The sound inside the snake was horrifying: a screech of tearing flesh and organs.
A second later, the colossal snake exploded from the center. Sasori emerged from the animal's belly in a rain of green fluid and blood, landing on his feet in the middle of the street, covered in viscera.
His breathing was erratic, his lungs burned from the effort, and his wooden hand was smoking, revealing that the internal gears had almost completely melted.
"Still alive?" Orochimaru seemed genuinely surprised, but his surprise turned into a predatory smile when he noticed Sasori only had one hand available, seeing the other hand emitting smoke.
Sasori looked around. The pieces of his human puppets those that had taken him months of surgical work and sealing were scattered on the ground like trash.
All his work, destroyed in an instant of survival. Only the two Uchihas remained by his side, but their movements were slow and erratic, having taken damage earlier.
"I still have two left... try to finish the job if you can."
While the duel seemed to be in its final moments, in the main plaza, Daigo and Jiraiya had didn't paused to observe the other fight.
Daigo was in the Fourth Heaven's Breath, his body surrounded by a pink aura that made the air around him vibrate.
Jiraiya, for his part, had torn clothes and shallow cuts on his arms and body. He had underestimated Daigo's versatility.
The young man used the crystal not only to attack but also to control the terrain, catching him by surprise several times saves that Jiraiya only made by the skin of his teeth.
"You're persistent," Jiraiya said, wiping a streak of blood from the corner of his mouth. "But the Shōton consumes a massive amount of chakra, and that breathing technique is forcing your heart. You won't be able to keep up this pace forever."
"I don't need it to be forever," Daigo responded, appearing in front of the Sannin in a blink. "I only need it to be long enough for Konoha to retreat with its tail between its legs."
Daigo launched a series of blows that Jiraiya could barely block. Each of Daigo's impacts felt like a crystal sledgehammer striking the Sannin's bones because of the layer of crystal in his hands.
Jiraiya was forced to use his lion's mane to wrap himself and cushion the blows, but Daigo's crystal began to grow over Jiraiya's own hair, attempting to immobilize him with his own jutsu.
"Gamabunta!" Jiraiya shouted from within his shield of hair. The giant toad looked over, understanding the call, and moved to help him.
Seeing the toad heading his way, Daigo trusted Iron to stop him.
Iron succeeded when he slammed into Gamabunta, who smashed through every house in his path.
However, using his intelligence, Gamabunta launched his giant katana toward Daigo while still being dragged along the ground.
He only had to stop Daigo for a second so Jiraiya could escape and he succeeded.
Feeling something coming toward him, Daigo looked up to see the giant katana flying at him. Without waiting a second, he performed hand seals and sank beneath the ground.
With Daigo out of the way, Jiraiya escaped, jumping between roofs until he reached Gamabunta, who had recovered.
Near the other side of the street...
Sasori, seeing Orochimaru preparing for a final attack, launched his last two Uchiha puppets in a desperate charge.
The puppets ran toward Orochimaru, performing a combined fire jutsu. But Orochimaru simply vanished into a cloud of smoke upon being hit by the jutsu.
"A clone?" Sasori searched desperately around him, not finding him until he thought to look at the ground.
In that moment, Orochimaru emerged from the earth right behind Sasori. It wasn't a clone; it was the original, hidden by a subterranean displacement technique.
In his hand shone the Kusanagi sword, extending with supernatural speed toward the young puppeteer's back.
Daigo, who had dodged backward and fallen near the fight, noticed the moment Orochimaru emerged from behind Sasori.
He could only scream his name.
"SASORIIII!" Daigo shouted, completely ignoring Jiraiya for a second.
But the warning was too late.
The sword pierced through Sasori from side to side, exiting through his sternum. However, instead of red blood, a thick brown liquid gushed out.
Sasori's body fell apart into pieces of wood a last-second puppet Kawarimi.
Sasori appeared a few meters away, falling to his knees and coughing up real blood.
Although he managed to get out, he didn't do it in time, taking a hit during his escape. His wooden hand detached from his arm, hitting the ground like a dead object.
'Almost,' Orochimaru hissed, retrieving his sword. 'But you have no tricks left, Sasori-kun.'"
Just as Orochimaru lunged to deliver the finishing blow and Jiraiya prepared a massive Rasengan to end Daigo, the battlefield was split by a twenty-meter-high wall of iron that surged from nowhere, separating the Suna combatants from those of Konoha.
"This sand..." Orochimaru muttered, recoiling by instinct.
From the sky, a figure descended with a presence that demanded respect. Floating on a platform of Iron Sand, the Third Kazekage surveyed the scene with absolute coldness.
Beside him, Rasa landed firmly, his gold dust already beginning to seep through the streets, ready to bury any enemy. Behind them, a legion of Suna ninjas appeared on the rooftops, surrounding the perimeter with jutsus and kunais at the ready.
"That is enough, ninjas of Konoha," the Third Kazekage's voice echoed throughout the city. "This city is under our command from this moment on; it is Sunagakure territory. If you do not wish to die, retreat to your village."
Jiraiya, who had just leaped onto Gamabunta's head, cursed under his breath. He was exhausted, his chakra was below half, and he was facing a Daigo who refused to stay down.
Now, with the arrival of the man considered the strongest Kazekage in the history of his village, the user of Gold Dust, and adding Pakura with her Shakuton into the mix, the chances of victory had dropped to negative.
"Orochimaru!" Jiraiya shouted, never taking his eyes off the Kazekage. "If we stay, Kanzaki will be our grave. We are no longer fighting children; we are fighting an entire village."
Orochimaru hissed, glaring with hatred at Sasori and Daigo, who was leaning heavily against a wall while trying to catch his breath.
The Sannin of snakes knew Jiraiya was right. Facing the Kazekage and three elite ninjas while already drained from the fight against Daigo and Sasori was suicide.
"What a waste," Orochimaru said, sheathing the Kusanagi into his throat with a fluid motion. "But you're right. For today, Suna can keep its ruins."
"Summoning: Release!" Jiraiya exclaimed.
In a massive explosion of smoke,
Gamabunta vanished, leaving Jiraiya and Orochimaru on the ground.
Both Sannin threw simultaneous smoke bombs as the Konoha ninjas began a tactical retreat, moving with the speed of shadows between the destroyed buildings.
The Suna ninjas prepared to pursue them, but the Third Kazekage raised a hand, stopping them.
"Let them go," the Kazekage ordered. "Our priority is to secure the city and our warriors."
Rasa quickly approached Daigo, who finally deactivated the Fourth Breath, leaving his body trembling from the overexertion. His pink aura faded, leaving only the trail of broken crystals around him.
"You were right the Kazekage was on his way. Your mind work on every detail," Rasa said with a rare tone of respect while looking at Daigo and then at Sasori. "Holding off two Sannin for this long is a feat that will be told in the history books of our village."
Sasori, looking at his severed arm and the remains of his puppets, only nodded bitterly, while Daigo stared toward where the Sannin had disappeared.
"I don't think I could have defeated Jiraiya he was holding back while fighting. And Sasori... he almost went to the other world," Daigo said.
"Yeah, but the experience is what counts. I think I know what's holding me back from reaching a new level," Sasori added.
