The journey back from the borders of the Land of Water unfolded with a sepulchral tranquility, a dense calm that sharply contrasted with the chaos the group left behind.
Thanks to the voluntary and savage sacrifice of Garō and the adults of the Kaguya clan, who crashed like a storm of bone and blood against Kirigakure's front lines, Yagura's forces were left completely blinded and occupied.
There were no pursuits at sea or alerts on the coasts; the path toward the Land of Tea was completely clear.
Upon reaching the underground tunnel that connected to Sunagakure, the group repeated the security protocol. However, before crossing completely, Daigo stopped at the entrance of the cavern and stared intently at his escorts.
His decision for this stage of the plan was different.
"Kisame," Daigo called, his voice resounding with firmness.
"I will return to Sunagakure escorting the children personally. Their walking pace will be slow and they will require constant attention. But the work in the Land of Water is not yet finished for you all. I want the five Shadows of the Desert to go find the Hoshigaki clan. Find out if they are willing to abandon the Mist and join the ranks of Sunagakure you know them better than anyone."
Kisame, nodding immediately as the undisputed leader of the Shadows, adjusted the massive Samehada on his shoulder and showed a shark-like grin.
"Understood, Kazekage-sama. I will arrive and speak with the current leader of the clan, though I doubt he will accept, I'll give it a try," Kisame responded readily, then narrowed his eyes with doubt.
"Do you want us to take advantage of the trip and look for the Hōzuki as well? They could help with sword teachings in the village."
Daigo shook his head textually, without hesitating for a single second.
"Do not waste your time with them," Daigo sentenced. "The Hōzuki will flatly refuse. They will not forget that because of me Mangetsu died in battle and that I stole the sacred swords of their village. Their pride and blind resentment will keep them in the Mist until it is too late. Focus only on your clan."
"Makes sense. We will move immediately," Kisame concluded.
In a blink, the five Shadows of the Desert vanished into the shadows of the tunnels, returning to the depths of the Land of Water to fulfill their diplomatic mission.
Daigo was left alone with the group of Kaguya children, who were watching him. He began a slow, leisurely, and quiet walk through the silent tunnel.
The Kaguya infants, despite their physical weakness, did not take their eyes off the young Kazekage; they observed the tunnels with absolute fascination and reverential awe because Daigo, to entertain them along the way, told them that he had built all of these himself.
Conscious of the fragile physical constitutions of the minors, Daigo ordered multiple stops to rest and eat.
Seeing that fatigue was beginning to overcome the smallest ones, Daigo performed a sequence of hand seals and bit his thumb.
"Kuchiyose no Jutsu!"
In the midst of a dense cloud of white smoke, Zoyu emerged in the path. His large body though sufficient to pass through the tunnels observed the group of malnourished children with curiosity.
"Hello, Zoyu. I'm sorry to call you, I didn't know if you were busy," Daigo said, looking at him.
"No problem, I wasn't doing anything. How can I help you, and why are you with so many children?"
"It's a long story, but I need your help to carry them. As you can see, they aren't in very good condition and we still have a way to go to reach Suna, so could you carry them on your back?" Daigo asked.
"Sure, why not? You know I'm the fastest elephant in the valley!"
Thus, Daigo carefully arranged the children on Zoyu's back, allowing the journey to take on a much more comfortable and safe pace for everyone.
Days later, with Zoyu taking a peaceful path, they began to notice the light at the end of the tunnel along with an ANBU patrol that appeared.
Daigo simply showed himself, causing them to bow, until Zoyu reached the exit of the tunnel, which was right in the middle of the village. Daigo descended from Zoyu and stared fixedly at the ANBU.
"Take all these children to the hospital immediately," Daigo ordered, looking at them.
"I want a complete and exhaustive medical checkup for each of them. Analyze their bone densities, their lungs, and apply a strict diet high in nutrients. Tell the reception that all medical and maintenance expenses run directly on my account. Have them send the invoices to my office."
"Right away, Kazekage-sama!" the ANBU exclaimed, quickly organizing themselves to escort the infants to the medical facilities.
With the children under professional care, Daigo walked with a firm step toward his tower, finally entering his main office.
Pakura followed him closely, closing the door behind her.
The woman could no longer contain the questions that had been swirling in her head since she saw the caravan.
"Daigo… how did it go after I separated from the group?" Pakura asked, leaning her hands on the Kage's desk.
"Why are there only little boys and girls in that group? Where are the adults of their clan? Who is going to take care of raising them, watching over them, and teaching them in an environment so different from theirs?"
Daigo sat in his Kazekage chair, intertwining his fingers over the desk while locking his gaze onto Pakura reflectively. He kept a brief silence, analyzing the weight of his own strategy, before speaking.
"Calm down, Pakura-chan, you are asking too many questions at once," Daigo said with a smile.
"The adults of the Kaguya clan are all dead, Pakura. They were consumed by a degenerative disease in their bones caused by the geography of their country, and they preferred to die in a suicide attack against Kirigakure rather than live as refugees. So, I managed to take all the children so they can grow up here."
Daigo leaned forward, looking intently at his companion.
"Also I send the other to talk with the hoshigaki clan because I don't think they will join and the Terumi refuse to join they prefer to stay and fight kirigakure"
Pakura looking a Daigo have a suggestion that something else Happen but didn't say anything
"I was thinking on the way... Pakura, what would you think about having the Kaguyas adopted by civilian families?" the young Kage asked, surprising the kunoichi.
"I want them to stop being lovers of fighting and blood, just as their parents were. I want to give them a peaceful life in Sunagakure, a life where they finally have the power to decide what they want to do with their future. I will not allow anyone in this village to take them or see them simply as tools of war to inflate Sunagakure's military power. They will be free citizens."
Pakura was even more surprised, moved, and deeply impacted by the maturity and nobility behind Daigo's words. A warm, determined smile formed on her face.
"It's a huge task, Daigo... but if that is your wish, you know perfectly well that I will support you in anything you decide," Pakura responded.
"I will make sure that the families these children go to are happy."
"Thank you, Pakura," Daigo nodded with sincerity.
"Furthermore, with the children safe, it's time to resume other pending matters. Starting tomorrow, I will officially begin Guren's intensive training to polish her Crystal Style."
Shortly after, Daigo summoned a meeting of the Sunagakure Council. The advisors of the Desert sat around the large circular table, murmuring among themselves until the Kazekage took his corresponding place.
Daigo, with an imposing presence, laid out some papers on the table all of them were records of each child from the Kaguya clan.
"We have successfully rescued and brought the future generations of two of the strongest clans in the Land of Water: the Yuki Clan and the surviving children of the Kaguya Clan," Daigo informed the table.
"Both possess Kekkei Genkai of invaluable worth. However, we have an immediate problem to solve. The nature of their abilities, especially that of the Yuki Clan with their Ice Style, requires a specific residential location within the village... They need a place where there is a great availability of water to be able to train and adapt properly. In this desert, that is a scarce resource that I don't see how to resolve."
The councilors began to argue, talking about the lack of oases and how expensive it would be to constantly transport water for a residential sector.
In that moment of tension, Chiyo, who had remained in silence observing all the documents, let out a sigh loaded with nostalgia and gently tapped the table with her wooden fingers.
"My... hearing this brings back old memories," Chiyo spoke, capturing the attention of the entire room.
"When I was young, I managed to hear a story from my own master, the Second Kazekage. He mentioned that in the times of the village's foundation, it was discovered that beneath the deepest layers of sand and rock of Sunagakure, there existed an immense, colossal amount of underground water. The problem is that all that mass of water was completely frozen, compacted under the desert in such a dense form that it had remained motionless there for centuries."
Daigo listened to the old woman's words and his eyes opened with a slight surprise. This was perfect; if it was true, he could find a way to use it both to help the Yuki clan and to help Sunagakure with its water problem
"Frozen water beneath the village..." Daigo murmured, a calculating smile beginning to form on his lips.
"That changes everything."
The Kazekage rose from his seat, looking with determination at the members of the council.
"Keep the Yuki Clan in the temporary residential zones for now," Daigo ordered, his voice resounding with a new and intriguing ambition.
"Do not make any decisions regarding the land. I will go to the depths of the earth myself to verify the truth of that information from the Second Kazekage. If that ice is real, Sunagakure will have found the perfect home for its new clans."
"That will be fine, Kazekage-sama, but what is going to be done with the Kaguya children you brought? They have no parents to take care of them and you will be too busy to do it," a councilor ask.
Faced with this, the others gave their points of view on how to train them so they would be strong and loyal ninjas.
"That will not happen," Daigo said, calming the entire council down from their crazy ideas.
"As I have said since I took the Kage hat, Sunagakure is not going to follow in its old footsteps. My idea to help both the Kaguya clan and Sunagakure is to let civilian families adopt them," Daigo said before everyone, to their surprise.
"Uh, Kazekage, wouldn't it be too much to give these children to civilians, especially since they aren't trained?" another councilor asked.
"That is the very reason why these children, no matter how strong they are and despite their lineage, are empty children without love or attachment to the village. If they are only trained and thrown into missions, they would end up being the same as the Mist," Daigo said.
Ebizō, who had said nothing while sitting next to Chiyo, raised his hand to speak, and Daigo gave him permission.
"I see what you are thinking, Daigo, and I believe it is for the best. You have my support. If these children grow up in families that love them and are loyal to the village, their viewpoint on Suna won't be that of a village they just live in, but the village that their family belongs to and that they are a part of," Ebizō said.
"I accept. Furthermore, these children do not all have to be ninjas. Let's let them choose to do whatever they want, because in future generations, these children will grow up and their children will have their lineage, and perhaps those ones will be ninjas. The civilian population will improve, causing us to have stronger ninjas in a future where we don't depend on clans."
With this, the meeting turned to a different point, looking for loyal families that could adopt one of the Kaguya children.
In the end, they finished obtaining the exact families so each Kaguya would grow up happy, changing their chaotic pasts.
