Chapter 12 - BHBS: Chapter 12

"Charge to 200!" Choi shouted over her, in full anger.

"Dr. Maeng, clear the bed!"

Maeng didn't seem to hear.

"Dr. Maeng! CLEAR THE BED! I SAID..."

Next he didn't wait for her to move. And gestured the nurses with him, and then next without any alert, three pair of hands grabbed her at once. Two grabbed her arms from either side and one sturdy female nurse grabbed her from her waist and all of them together pulled her away from the patient, throwing her away. She hit the floor, her knees slamming against the tile.

Dr. Choi cried.

"CHARGE"

"Look at me!" she screamed, shaking him so hard that his shoulders jerked. "Wake up! COWARD!"

And then she hit him.

She swung her hand back and brought it back, across his cheek with a vicious, stinging crack. The slap echoed over the beeping monitors, sharp as a gunshot. It snapped his head to the side, leaving a harsh, blooming red handprint on his ashen skin.

The entire trauma bay stopped breathing.

"MAENG SE-NA!" Dr. choi cried.

The frantic movements froze. The cluster of onlookers by the door, phones raised to record a tragedy, stood paralyzed. It was unthinkable. A doctor had just assaulted the dying "Medic of the Century" in front of an audience with world in their hands.

"Did she just...?" a nurse whispered, horrified.

"How dare you?" Se-na was shrieking at him, ignoring the gasps, and clearly ignoring the cameras.

The Hospital Director broke the paralysis. "Clear it!" he roared, his face purple and swollen with anger. "Everyone out! Get those cameras out of here! Curtains! Now!"

Nurses surged like a tidal wave, shoving the gaping crowd backward and violently pulling the heavy blue curtains around the bed, sealing them in a small, suffocating cube of fabric.

"Get her off him!" the Director yelled over the noise. "Pull her down!"

Hands grabbed Se-na's shoulders, pulling at her waist, trying to drag her off the bed. She fought them off like a feral animal, kicking out and throwing elbows like a wounded cheetah.

"Don't touch me!" she cried, a raw, ugly sound that she had never made in her life. She ripped herself out of Choi's grip, throwing herself back over his body. She locked her hands together and slammed them down again.

One. Two. Three.

"You preached to the whole world!" she spat at his face, her arms pumping, her muscles screaming in agony. "You told them you had a heart! Use it! Beat!"

Crunch.

Under the heel of her hand, his rib gave way. It was a sickening, wet snap. Dr. Choi gasped, reaching for her again. "Dr. Maeng! You're breaking him! Stop! We have defib…"

She just gritted her teeth, tasting the copper of her own bleeding lip, and pushed again. Her arms were feeling severe the heat and pain of the exhaustion now. But again she didn't care if she broke every bone in his body, or hers…as long as he woke up to feel it.

"He's not a machine!" she screamed back at Choi, though she didn't look away from Ra-ik's face. "Get it away! I'm fixing!"

"Charge to 200!" Choi shouted over her, in full anger.

"Dr. Maeng, clear the bed!"

Maeng didn't seem to hear.

"Dr. Maeng! CLEAR THE BED!"

Next didn't wait for her to move. And gestured the male nurses with him and then three pairs of hands grabbed her at once. Two grabbed her arms from either side and one fit female nurse grabbed her from her waist and all of them together pulled her away from the patient, throwing her away. She hit the floor, her knees slamming against the tile.

Dr. Choi charged.

"CLEAR"

"SHOCK", The defibrillator fired and Ra-ik's body jolted off of the mattress, all rigid and violent, before collapsing back into a lifeless heap.

"AGAIN"

"CLEAR"

"SHOCK"

"THUMP"

Se-na got up again but the nurse held her down. She scrambled to her hands and knees, her chest heaving, her eyes glued to the monitor. The green line slid across the screen. Flat. A single, unending tone pierced her ears.

Eeeeeeeeeeee.

"Again!" she croaked, trying to crawl back toward the bed, but her arms finally betrayed her. "TRY AGAIN!"

Her arms were shaking so violently that they couldn't even hold her weight now. She freed herself again but this time a resident grabbed her waist, holding her back. She thrashed against him, her vision going dark around the edges.

"Let me go!" she begged, the anger finally breaking, leaving behind a pathetic, hollow terror.

TRY AGAIN!!! CHARGE IT!"

No one moved

WHAT ARE DOING! I SAID AGAIN! CHOI! DO COMPRESSIONS!

Its already more than 20 minutes Dr. Maeng, the resident holding her said solemnly.

SHUT UP! I SAID TRY AGAIN!

Dr. Maeng we tried everything we could…saying this choi looked toward chief and then at director who were both looking very regretful and then director gave a reluctant nod. Choi looked back at Maeng who was trying to set herself free now, "Time of Death…" Choi looked at the clock.

"NOO…DON'T! DON'T YOU DARE! NOO"

And then, it broke.

A tiny, static crackle on the monitor. Then, a stutter.

The flat line bumped. Once. Twice. Then another and other and then it spiked a jagged, peak on the screen.

Beep.

Se-na went completely still in the resident's arms.

Beep... Beep.

"ROSC!" Choi yelled, his voice cracking with disbelief. "We have a pulse! He's back!"

The space inside the curtains erupted into a frenzy of life, but Se-na couldn't hear them anymore. She looked at Ra-ik. His chest hitched, just a tiny bit, a small mechanical movement, but it was there finally.

And then adrenaline drained out of her veins, leaving her completely empty. The resident holding her tried to let her go to help the nurses, but Se-na just folded. Resident held her strongly and cried her name but she couldn't hear anything now and last thing she registered before the darkness pulled her under was his limping hand now pulled back on the bed under the sheet and the sound of the machine beep beep beep…
