The Supervisor finally led him to a quieter wing of the castle, where the noise of combat reached them only as a distant echo. A room had been prepared for him. The place was starkly austere: a stone bed covered with thick furs, a low table where a thick candle burned, and a narrow window overlooking the scorched lands. A servant girl, recognizable by her small obsidian horns, waited near the door. She bowed slightly upon seeing Kaiser.
"Lord Kaiser," she said in a soft voice that contrasted with the gloomy decor. "If you need anything during the night, you have only to call. I will be at your disposal."
Kaiser entered and closed the door behind him. He sat on the edge of the bed, feeling the coolness of the stone seeping through his clothes. He looked at his hands, his palms still marked by the scars of past battles.
