Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: The Unsettling Silence

The rain fell softly over the city that evening, turning the glass walls of Belonia Group's headquarters into a shimmering mirror of blurred lights and distant movement.

Inside, the office had emptied, leaving behind a quiet that felt… almost deliberate.

Elina sat alone at her desk.

A single lamp illuminated her workspace, casting a warm glow over scattered files. Her fingers moved across the keyboard with quiet determination, but her thoughts weren't entirely on the screen in front of her.

They hadn't been for days.

Not since him.

Belonia.

Even thinking his name felt like stepping into something dangerous.

He was… impossible to ignore.

Not just because of how he looked — though that alone could unsteady anyone. Tall, broad-shouldered, every movement precise, like a man who had long mastered control. His face carried that effortless, almost unreal beauty, sharp and defined like something carved from marble.

But it wasn't just that.

It was the way he looked at people.

Like he could see straight through them — and choose whether they were worth his time.

Elina leaned back slightly, pressing her fingers against her temples.

Focus, she told herself. This is just work.

But something about this place… about him… made it hard to keep things simple.

"You're still here."

The voice came from behind her — low, controlled, and unmistakable.

Her breath caught.

She turned slowly.

Belonia stood a few steps away, jacket draped over his arm, sleeves slightly rolled up. The relaxed look somehow made him even more dangerous. Less distant. More… real.

"I had some things to finish," Elina replied, her voice softer than she intended.

His gaze lingered on her for a moment longer than necessary.

Then he walked closer.

Each step was measured, deliberate — like he knew exactly what his presence did to the air around him.

He stopped beside her desk, glancing at the documents she had been working on.

"You're thorough," he said.

It wasn't praise.

It wasn't criticism either.

Just an observation — but somehow, it made her chest tighten.

"Thank you," she said quietly.

Silence followed.

Not empty silence — the kind that presses in, that fills the space between two people with things neither of them are saying.

Elina became suddenly aware of everything.

The faint scent of his cologne.

The closeness of his presence.

The way her heartbeat had… changed.

Belonia leaned slightly forward, one hand resting on the edge of her desk.

Too close.

Not inappropriate. Not obvious.

But close enough that she could feel the heat of him.

"You don't leave early," he said.

"I… prefer to finish what I start."

A pause.

Something flickered in his eyes — interest, perhaps.

"Good," he murmured.

Elina tried to focus on her screen again, but it was impossible.

She could feel him still there.

Watching.

Not in a way that made her uncomfortable… but in a way that made her aware of herself. Too aware.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

"Is there something else, sir?" she asked, forcing professionalism into her voice.

Belonia didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he studied her.

Really studied her.

Her long, coily hair falling over her shoulders.

The softness of her features.

The quiet strength in the way she held herself — even now, even under pressure.

She didn't look like someone who had fought battles.

But something about her said she had.

"You don't talk much," he finally said.

Elina blinked slightly. "I… didn't think it was necessary."

A faint curve touched his lips — not quite a smile.

"Most people talk too much," he said. "You don't."

Another pause.

This one felt heavier.

Closer.

Elina's breath slowed as she turned slightly in her chair, now facing him more directly.

Their eyes met.

And for a brief moment — just a moment — something shifted.

Not authority.

Not distance.

Something quieter.

More dangerous.

Then, just as quickly, it was gone.

Belonia straightened, stepping back, the space between them returning like a wall being rebuilt.

"Finish your work," he said, voice cool again.

And just like that, he turned and walked away.

Elina sat there, unmoving.

Her heart was still racing.

Her thoughts… scattered.

What was that?

She didn't know.

But she knew one thing for certain:

Something had changed.

And whatever it was… it wasn't going to be simple.

Across the room, Belonia paused briefly before entering his office.

His jaw tightened slightly.

His mind replayed the moment .. the way she had looked at him, the quiet steadiness in her voice, the unexpected pull he hadn't planned for.

He exhaled slowly.

Controlled.

Measured.

"Just an employee," he muttered under his breath.

But even as he said it…

He didn't quite believe it.
