Chapter 217 - Chapter 217 - As Expected — A Depressing Story

Unlike the somewhat stream-of-consciousness narrative of '5 Centimeters per Second', the storytelling here was very different.

In '5 Centimeters per Second', the female lead mostly felt like a background presence. She only appeared in a few scenes during the first act.

In the second and third acts, she practically vanished entirely until the film ended.

But 'We Made a Beautiful Bouquet' portrayed both the male and female leads in far greater detail.

Su Yan and Shinozaki Ikumi appearing in person in the film was a pleasant surprise, but their total screen time was less than a minute.

The real focus of the story remained on the two protagonists—Yamane Mugi and Hachiya Kinu.

Because they encountered a film creator they both admired in the bar, the two of them finally found a point of connection.

First, they liked the same director.

Then they discovered their values were nearly identical.

Even the shoes they were wearing that day were the same model—just different sizes.

After noticing these coincidences, they tactfully separated from the other two people who clearly didn't share their wavelength and headed to another café together.

They sat at a quiet table inside.

And formally introduced themselves.

Zhong Qianxue blinked.

This actually felt like a rather traditional romance film.

She hadn't expected Su Yan to create something like this.

Yet before they realized it, many people in the theater were watching with smiles on their faces.

The film spent a large portion of its time showing just how similar the two protagonists were.

Whenever Hachiya Kinu brought up a topic, Yamane Mugi could immediately continue it—not pretending, but genuinely knowledgeable about it.

Likewise, when Yamane Mugi mentioned something, Hachiya Kinu also understood perfectly.

Their favorite books.

Their favorite authors.

Their favorite musicians and bands.

And then—

They talked about the exhibition they had both missed.

Both of them had kept their tickets.

When they took them out and compared them—

Their seats at the exhibition had been right next to each other.

They had missed each other there.

Yet met again here.

In reality, something like that might make people suspicious.

Was this some kind of scam?

But in the film, it created the feeling that fate itself was favoring them.

The music began.

The film didn't deliberately try to manufacture a romantic atmosphere.

Yet Zhong Qianxue still felt the romance.

Still felt the flutter of her heart.

Did someone like this truly exist in the world?

Someone you had never met before—

Yet shared so many of the same preferences.

Like…

Another version of yourself somewhere in the world.

And these two people, guided by fate's teasing and arrangement, met tonight in the story.

While watching the film, Zhong Qianxue thought about her ex-boyfriend.

Comparing people really was infuriating.

"If we had gone to the exhibition that day, we might not have met today," Hachiya Kinu said with a soft laugh.

"That's true. Then this ticket must be what brought us together today," Yamane Mugi replied, smiling as he pointed at the expired ticket in his hand.

By this point in the movie, most of the audience had already become immersed.

The next long stretch of scenes showed how the two gradually moved from acquaintance to ambiguity, and then toward liking each other.

"It's said that if you've eaten together three times and still haven't confessed, then you'll just become ordinary friends."

Yamane Mugi's narration sounded.

So—

"I've decided. The next time we meet, I'll confess to him."

Late at night, Hachiya Kinu made that resolution to herself.

Zhong Qianxue watched with an expression full of longing.

But soon she also felt slightly stunned.

Wait.

Had she misunderstood Su Yan?

Was this movie actually a pure romance?

Was he just tricking everyone into the theater to feed them sweet romance scenes?

If two people understood each other to this degree, how could the ending possibly be tragic?

It wouldn't make sense at all.

Was the entire movie just going to shower the audience with sweetness until the end?

On the same day, both of them suggested meeting again.

From daytime onward, they were both secretly preparing the atmosphere for confession.

Their first meeting had happened because they missed the last train.

So this time, they decided to confess during the same time period when the subway's last train departed.

The atmosphere was completely different from '5 Centimeters per Second'.

Although Zhong Qianxue was being fed an enormous amount of romantic sweetness, it genuinely felt sweet to her heart.

Then—

When the moment finally arrived—

The two of them both picked up their phones and checked the time.

Pretending to take photos of the desserts the waiter had just brought to the table.

But in reality, they were aiming the camera at each other's faces.

Preparing to record the moment.

Just as Hachiya Kinu gathered the courage to speak—

Yamane Mugi spoke first.

"Hachiya..."

Her expression changed slightly, as if she had already sensed what was coming.

"Yes."

"Would you be my girlfriend?"

At the same moment, both of their phones lifted slightly higher.

Their cameras pointed directly at each other's faces.

"Yes. I'd love to."

Hachiya Kinu's smile came without even a second of hesitation.

At that moment, sweetness filled the entire theater.

Even though it was pure romantic "dog food," everyone was enjoying it.

[Old sadist… so you actually know how to write sweetness?]

[If you can write sweet romance like this, why did you always make depressing stories before?!]

[Your ability to write sweetness is just as strong as your ability to emotionally destroy us!]

But since the movie was titled 'We Made a Beautiful Bouquet', everyone knew the real story probably lay ahead.

Falling in love was only the beginning.

The male lead was an amateur illustrator.

The female lead had just graduated and was still looking for a job.

Before finding stable work, both of them supported themselves with part-time jobs.

Neither had stable employment, but that didn't affect their relationship.

However, as Zhong Qianxue continued watching, she gradually sensed something was wrong.

Normally, falling in love was emotional.

As long as the hormones kicked in, that was enough.

But maintaining a relationship was completely different.

It required not only continued attraction and freshness—

But also economic stability and support from family and friends.

Although Zhong Qianxue was only guessing, the following plot unfolded exactly as she expected.

Yamane Mugi's painting career became increasingly difficult.

Eventually, he decided to give up his dream and search for a stable job.

Meanwhile, Hachiya Kinu continued drifting between part-time jobs.

In romance stories, couples usually break up because of financial or family pressures.

Zhong Qianxue had seen such plots many times before.

Yet watching it here in the cinema still made her feel uncomfortable.

Sometimes movies were entertaining for others.

But for you, they felt like looking into a mirror.

However, 'We Made a Beautiful Bouquet' didn't fall into the cliché of the couple fighting over money.

To be honest, neither of them cared much about finances.

Otherwise, Hachiya Kinu—who came from a well-off family—would never have chosen to be with Yamane Mugi.

But no matter how well two people understood each other, they would still have differences.

When men fell in love, they often thought more about the future and responsibility.

But the female lead, Hachiya Kinu, only wanted things to remain the same.

She wanted them to keep living together carefree like before.

One person gradually shifted his focus from games, movies, and leisure toward work.

The other continued doing part-time jobs while enjoying life.

From this point onward—

Zhong Qianxue began to feel uneasy.

When two people started pursuing different things, could they still understand each other the way they once did?

The first half of the film had been filled with sweetness.

But now the story had begun turning in this direction.

Even though Zhong Qianxue had mentally prepared herself before entering the theater—knowing Su Yan's style—

When the turning point truly arrived, her heart still felt unsettled.

From here on, the atmosphere of the film changed.

Yamane Mugi worked hard, but gradually neglected spending time with Hachiya Kinu.

And because they both understood each other's thoughts so well—

Hachiya Kinu knew exactly why Yamane Mugi was working so hard.

She understood.

She didn't get angry.

At the same time, Yamane Mugi also understood the changes in Hachiya Kinu's heart.

His girlfriend was an optimist.

She didn't care how much money he earned or whether he had a promising future.

As long as they could live together, spending more time with each other was far more meaningful than money.

Both of them knew what the other was thinking.

Yet neither could become what the other hoped for.

Zhong Qianxue finally began to understand the things Su Yan had said during the film's promotion.

The answer people failed to find in '5 Centimeters per Second'—

It could be found in 'We Made a Beautiful Bouquet'.

Many viewers believed the couple in '5 Centimeters per Second' separated because of time and distance.

But in this film—

Even when the male and female leads lived together every day and understood each other's thoughts—

A rift still formed between them.

Because Yamane Mugi believed that if they wanted a future together, he had to achieve something in his career.

But Hachiya Kinu only wanted to stay where they were.

"I don't understand what he's thinking—talking about marriage when we haven't even slept together in three months."

"I don't understand how long she plans to keep thinking like a student. Has she never considered spending her whole life with me?"

Their internal monologues, spoken while facing away from each other, made the atmosphere in the theater sink heavily.

By this point, more than 90% of the audience could guess where the story was heading.

But knowing didn't mean immunity.

The sweeter the earlier scenes had been—

The more suffocating it felt to watch their relationship slowly crack apart.

For Zhong Qianxue, '5 Centimeters per Second' had been like a powerful shock.

Its ending suddenly crushed all expectations at once.

But 'We Made a Beautiful Bouquet' was like slow poison.

Everyone could predict the outcome halfway through the story.

Yet they still held onto a small trace of hope.

These two people had once understood each other so perfectly.

Their interests and values aligned.

They were like another version of each other in the world.

Could it really be that even your former "other self in the world" could no longer understand who you had become now?

If that were true—

Then what love in this world could truly endure?

But the more Zhong Qianxue watched, the more suffocating it felt.

Because the film slowly dissected the process of how two people who once understood each other began to blame each other.

Hachiya Kinu tried to move on from her part-time lifestyle.

This even led to arguments with Yamane Mugi.

Meanwhile, Yamane Mugi—already sensing the cracks in their relationship—thought of a way to stop things from falling apart.

He proposed.

During an argument.

But in the end—

He was rejected.

After that came constant quarrels.

Doubts from coworkers and friends about whether the two could truly continue together.

And then—

The most painful scene for Zhong Qianxue.

Hachiya Kinu and Yamane Mugi attended the wedding of their mutual friends.

They stood on opposite sides of the staircase as bridesmaid and groomsman.

Both of them chatted with their respective friends.

Yet while talking—

They kept looking at each other.

The bride and groom walked up the steps.

Yamane Mugi said to his friend beside him:

"I'm going to break up with Kinu."

At the same moment—

Hachiya Kinu said to her best friend:

"I'm going to break up with Mugi."

From beginning to end, the film was filled with this kind of symmetry.

At the start of the story, they both prepared to confess on the same day, at the same time.

Now—

They were preparing to break up on the same day as well.

Even though they themselves hadn't changed.

They still felt like each other's "other self in the world."

Yet the story had still arrived at this point.

Zhong Qianxue felt a painful knot in her stomach.

Even though she had already guessed that Su Yan's film probably wouldn't have a happy ending—

Guessing didn't mean she was immune to it.
