This answer was a bit special, and Polaris had no objection to it.
Still, it sounded a bit too much—no one could handle that! Was that even possible? Wouldn't that wear the poor ox out?
Although she had asked him to tell the truth, she hadn't expected him to tell the truth!
Her bright eyes sparkled with mischief, shyness, and a hint of anticipation.
Polaris didn't know what she was expecting—maybe two hours?
"You're not bragging, are you?"
"You'll know when you get the chance to try it," Steve Rogers replied with a teasing smile.
Why did he suddenly feel like the big bad wolf from those old stories?
He quickly changed the subject, becoming serious again, as if what he had said earlier had just been a joke.
"Just kidding. I see you as a compatriot—a beautiful compatriot that I respect. You have an indomitable will to fight. It reminds me of the day I decided to join the army to fight the Nazis.
Give me half a month. It's fine. Your father will be okay."
Although it would take some time, with Captain America's help, the success rate would be ten times higher than if she tried alone.
They chatted for a while before heading out to lunch together.
When it was finally time to say goodbye to Steve, the smile on Polaris's face faded slightly.
Abandoned by her team and with her mother gone, her only remaining belief was finding her biological father.
"Maybe starting a family with Steve wouldn't be so bad…"
Polaris was startled by her own thought. She longed for family—something that could fill her loneliness. Loneliness could drive a person mad.
When Steve returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, bad news awaited him.
Tony Stark had been attacked while participating in a car race in Morocco!
It wasn't surprising. Once a superhero's identity was public, retaliation was inevitable.
Since announcing that he was Iron Man, Tony had stirred up quite a storm. Many terrorists and arms dealers had been arrested because of him, and those people had deep, powerful connections.
It was possible that many of them were working for influential figures who had suffered heavy losses after Tony's interference.
The remnants of the Ten Rings organization, destroyed in Afghanistan, sought revenge—giving Whiplash a chance to strike.
Tony's real genius lay in something no one else on Earth could replicate: the Arc Reactor.
The miniaturized version was essentially a portable power plant—its efficiency and energy output unmatched by any existing technology.
The U.S. Congress had been trying to seize Tony's Iron Man suit and Arc Reactor technology for themselves, even holding hearings to pressure him.
But Tony had resisted every attempt.
Now, Whiplash had succeeded in replicating the Arc Reactor—an event that would shake the global balance of power.
When you're the only one with such advanced technology, you can negotiate from a position of strength.
But once that exclusivity is broken, trouble is inevitable.
Just then, Steve's phone rang.
"Dear, please come to the office when you have time," Sharon's lazy, content voice came through.
Though she couldn't match Steve's stamina and often ended up exhausted, her super-soldier serum allowed her to recover quickly.
The stronger one's body, the harder it became to conceive.
Especially since she was also a super soldier, the odds dropped dramatically.
That only meant trying more often—maybe luck would eventually favor them.
"Anytime," Steve replied with a small smile.
If it was his wife calling, he'd make time. Anyone else? That depended on his mood.
He wasn't called the King of Fishing for nothing.
When he arrived at the Secretary-General's office, he found Sharon and Maria Hill there—along with another woman.
She wore fluorescent purple sunglasses, her shoulder-length black-and-white hair slightly tousled, with a streak of white in her bangs. Her elegant makeup couldn't quite hide the faint wrinkles and crow's feet that hinted at a hard life. She was clearly still beautiful, even past her prime.
The woman stood up and extended her hand with a carefully practiced smile.
"Hello, Captain. I'm Valentina, Deputy Director of the CIA. Nice to meet you."
Valentina? The name sounded familiar.
"Are you Nick Fury's wife—or his old flame?" Steve asked dryly as he shook her hand briefly, glancing at Hill and Sharon.
Hill looked tired, lounging in her office chair. Since becoming pregnant, she had been unusually sleepy.
Her position as Secretary-General allowed her to take maternity leave whenever she wished, and it also made it easier to conceal her pregnancy.
No one could know. The child of an agent had to remain a secret—one worth crossing any line to protect.
Meanwhile, Sharon looked sharp and composed, dressed in a stylish urban outfit and hollow-pointed heels.
She sat on the main sofa. Tea had been poured—but no coffee. That meant the discussion was going to be long and serious.
If it were just a casual visit, coffee would have sufficed.
"Haha, Captain, you're joking," Valentina said smoothly. "My husband passed away long ago. He served with you in the Howling Commandos."
Steve blinked, then gave her a curious look.
"Are you also a centenarian?"
Pfft—
Sharon burst out laughing. Her husband was too sharp-tongued for his own good.
It was clear Steve didn't trust Valentina. The moment he sensed trouble, he struck first with humor.
Sharon, as Peggy Carter's niece, had always admired his quick wit.
Valentina's smile stiffened slightly.
She had heard that Captain America had become a bit "different" after waking up from the ice—but seeing him in person was truly eye-opening.
"Captain, you're such a comedian," she said, keeping her tone light. "I'm here to ask a favor. The CIA has a mission that requires S.H.I.E.L.D.'s cooperation."
"Then you should talk to the Secretary-General or the Director," Steve interrupted before she could finish. "I'm just a Level 6 agent. I can't help you."
He didn't bother hiding his distrust. Everything about Valentina screamed bad intentions.
[Valentina's favorability toward you: 20. Her mission involves mutants—and the vampire princess Danica.]
Steve's mind began working rapidly.
Mutants?
Vampires?
What connection could there possibly be between those two groups?
He tapped his fingers rhythmically on the sofa, watching Valentina's every move.
No matter how he deflected her words, she just kept smiling.
A smiling tiger, indeed.
It's a trap.
