He activated the artifact by sending his demonic energy into it, then he felt his aura and demonic energy being suppressed by the artifact.
He could fight the suppression and actually prevent it from suppressing him, but he chose not to for very obvious reasons.
Eventually, his aura and demonic energy was suppressed to the level of a Superior Fiend.
