Chapter 16 - The Whispering Wind Festival 1

The wind that day carried laughter.

It had been one month since Ren's visit, yet the memories of their spar still lingered in Kaito's mind like distant thunder rolling across mountains. Training had continued every day under Master Akira's watchful eyes, though Kaito still struggled at times to steady his thoughts. The events of the past weeks had weighed on him more than he admitted.

But today…

Today was different.

Today, the Wind Village was alive.

Banners of white silk stretched across the streets, fluttering gently beneath the endless sky. Lanterns hung from rooftops and market posts, waiting patiently for the evening when they would be lit. Every home, every shop, every pathway carried signs of preparation.

Because today was August 5th.

The day of the Whispering Wind Festival.

A celebration older than most of the village itself.

Long ago, when the Wind Clan stood on the brink of ruin, when storms and enemies alike threatened to erase them from existence, it was said that the Goddess of Wind herself descended from the heavens.

She came not with thunder or fury, but with calm.

With wind.

With salvation.

And so, every year since that day, the Wind Clan gathered to honor her.

Not with war.

Not with pride.

But with gratitude.

The festival was simple in its meaning, yet grand in its celebration. Though many smaller activities filled the day, three sacred events formed the heart of the festival:

The Wind Dance.

The Divine Wind Prayer.

The Lantern Ceremony.

The festival itself would begin in the evening.

For now, the afternoon sun hung gently over the village, casting warm light across rooftops and white stone streets.

And somewhere among the lively crowds walked a small boy holding his sister's hand.

"Lord Kaito, slow down a little."

Kaede's calm voice drifted behind him.

Kaito turned halfway as he walked, grinning slightly.

"I'm not going fast."

"You are when someone with shorter legs is trying to keep up."

Kaito blinked.

Then looked down.

Little Hina waddled beside him, gripping his fingers tightly with both of her tiny hands. Her short white hair bounced gently as she walked, and her round eyes sparkled with curiosity at everything around her.

"Ah," Kaito said sheepishly.

Hina looked up at him.

"Kaito."

"I'm here," he replied softly.

She nodded, satisfied, and continued walking.

Kaede watched them both with a faint smile as they moved through the market district.

The market was far busier than usual.

Vendors decorated their stalls with ribbons of flowing white cloth. Wooden stands displayed colorful sweets shaped like tiny wind spirals. Lantern frames stacked neatly in baskets waited to be purchased for the night ceremony.

Children ran through the streets with excited laughter.

Wind animals drifted lazily overhead—small creatures formed of soft air currents that shimmered faintly in the sunlight.

"Ah! Young Master Kaito!"

A vendor waved enthusiastically from his stall.

Kaito turned and bowed politely.

"Good afternoon."

The man laughed warmly.

"Ready for tonight's festival?"

Kaito smiled.

"Of course."

"Your father is dancing again this year, right?"

A woman nearby chimed in.

"I heard Lady Hana will be dancing too!"

Another person laughed.

"The Wind Dance wouldn't be the same without them!"

Hina tugged Kaito's sleeve.

"Sweet."

The vendor chuckled.

"Of course!"

He leaned over his stall and handed Hina a small wrapped candy shaped like a spiral shell.

Her eyes widened.

"Thank you," Kaito said quickly.

Hina clutched the candy happily.

"Sweet!"

The nearby crowd laughed softly.

Kaede bowed politely.

"You're too kind."

As they continued walking, the sounds of preparation filled the streets.

Workers hung lanterns.

Musicians tuned drums.

Families decorated doorways with wind charms that chimed softly whenever a breeze passed.

The whole village felt like it was breathing together.

Kaito watched everything with quiet excitement.

Even though he had seen the festival every year of his life… it still felt magical.

Kaede glanced at the sun.

"Lord Kaito."

"Yes?"

"We should return soon. Your family will begin preparing for the ceremony."

Kaito nodded.

"Alright."

He looked down again.

"Hina, let's go home."

"Home!"

She raised her arms happily.

Kaito sighed.

"Not carrying you."

Hina pouted.

Kaede hid a quiet laugh.

The Kaze Estate stood peacefully in the southern district of the village, surrounded by elegant white walls and flowing gardens where the wind moved freely through tall grass.

When Kaito pushed open the entrance doors, laughter echoed from inside.

"Ah! They're back!"

The moment they entered the large main hall, the lively gathering came into view.

Many members of the Kaze family had already arrived.

Toru stood near the center of the room, speaking casually with his father Raiden, while Daigo, the oldest of them all, sat comfortably nearby with a cup of tea.

Across the room stood Kazue, Toru's older sister, speaking animatedly with Hana and Hana's mother Aiko.

And near the windows, two younger figures turned as the door opened.

"KAITO!"

A small girl ran forward immediately.

"Yumi!" Kaito said.

The six-year-old girl stopped in front of him with bright excitement.

Then she noticed the tiny girl beside him.

Her eyes widened.

"Hina!"

She crouched down instantly.

"Hi!"

Hina stared at her.

Then giggled.

"Hi!"

Within seconds, the two girls were already playing with each other, laughing softly.

From across the room, a tall teenager walked over.

Reiji.

He ruffled Kaito's hair.

"So."

Kaito frowned.

"Don't do that."

Reiji grinned.

"How's life as a big brother?"

Kaito crossed his arms.

"It's normal."

"Normal?"

Reiji pointed at Hina, who was currently trying to climb onto Yumi's shoulders.

"You call that normal?"

Kaito watched quietly.

Then smiled slightly.

"…Yes."

Behind them, Daigo called out.

"Kaito."

Kaito turned respectfully.

"Yes, Great Grandfather."

Daigo's old eyes studied him carefully.

"How has training been?"

Kaito hesitated.

"...Good."

The old man nodded knowingly.

"Akira pushing you hard?"

Kaito nodded.

"Always."

Daigo chuckled.

"Good."

Servants and personal maids moved quietly around the room preparing robes and ceremonial items.

The house felt warm.

Alive.

Family voices mixed together with laughter and teasing.

For a moment…

Kaito simply enjoyed it.

Later that afternoon, Kaito stood inside his room.

Spread across his bed was the festival robe.

Pure white silk.

Soft flowing sleeves.

Subtle patterns that resembled drifting wind currents woven into the fabric.

Every member of the Wind Clan wore a special robe during the festival.

But the robes of the Kaze family were always made with the finest craftsmanship.

Kaito carefully tied the sash around his waist.

He had just finished when a gentle knock sounded at the door.

"Lord Kaito."

Kaede.

"I'm ready."

He opened the door.

Kaede stood outside wearing the ceremonial robe as well.

For a moment, Kaito blinked.

She looked… different.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

The flowing sleeves and long white fabric suited her perfectly.

"You look nice," Kaito said simply.

Kaede smiled warmly.

"Thank you, Lord Kaito."

Then she tilted her head slightly.

"And you look very handsome."

Kaito scratched his cheek.

"Let's go."

They walked downstairs together.

And when they reached the main hall…

Kaito stopped.

The entire Kaze family stood gathered.

All dressed in the same flowing white robes.

The air felt calm.

Powerful.

Beautiful.

Kazue laughed first.

"Well look at him!"

Reiji whistled.

"Kaito actually looks noble for once."

"I always look noble."

"Sure you do."

Kaito walked over to his parents.

"You both look amazing."

Hana smiled softly.

"Thank you."

Toru leaned slightly closer to her.

"You always look elegant no matter what you wear."

Hana glanced at him.

"Flirting again?"

"Always."

Kazue groaned.

"Please not in front of the children."

Everyone laughed.

Finally Toru turned toward the door.

The evening wind brushed softly against the open entrance.

He smiled.

"The wind is waiting."

His voice carried calm authority.

"Let's not keep it waiting."

The Kaze family stepped out together.

And the Whispering Wind Festival truly began.

Night had fallen.

And the Wind Village had transformed.

Lanterns glowed along every street.

White banners flowed like rivers of silk above the crowds.

Thousands of villagers walked together beneath the soft evening sky, all dressed in ceremonial robes.

Music drifted through the air.

Wind animals glided gracefully between rooftops.

As the Kaze family walked through the streets, people stepped aside respectfully.

Some bowed.

Some waved.

Children stared in awe.

Parents gently pulled them back.

"Don't run!"

Kaito held Hina's hand carefully as they walked.

She looked everywhere at once.

"Pretty."

"Yes," Kaito said softly.

"It's the festival."

Hina nodded seriously.

"Festival."

Kaede walked beside him.

"Lord Kaito."

"Yes?"

"You remember the three sacred events tonight, correct?"

Kaito nodded.

"Wind Dance."

"Correct."

"Divine Wind Prayer."

"Correct."

"And Lantern Ceremony."

Kaede smiled gently.

"Very good."

Hina tugged his sleeve again.

"Dance?"

Kaito grinned.

"That one's my favorite."

Just then someone approached from the crowd.

Tall.

Calm.

Composed.

Master Akira.

Kaito immediately bowed.

"Master."

Akira nodded slightly.

"You look presentable."

"Thank you."

Nearby, a group of young women whispered excitedly.

"Is that him?"

"He's even more handsome up close!"

Akira ignored them entirely.

Kaito glanced back awkwardly.

Kaede covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Akira simply said,

"The Wind Dance will begin soon."

And together, they walked toward the gathering crowd.

Where the drums were already waiting.

And the first sacred event of the Whispering Wind Festival was about to begin.
