Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 – I What should not be remembered

Raven had not fully awakened, he was standing, yet his body did not feel entirely his own, the air had returned, the trees had returned, the shadows had returned, but something had not… something had changed, something subtle, something that could not be seen directly, only felt, and the silence around him was no longer natural, it was not the quiet of a forest, it was a watching silence, heavy, aware, as if the place itself had stopped being a location and had become an eye

He breathed slowly, trying to anchor himself, trying to hold onto something real, but every time he focused, something slipped between his thoughts, something that resisted, something that refused to be understood, something that should not be remembered… not fully… not safely

Then it began

Not a sound… not a shadow… but a flaw

At the edge of his vision, something moved, but only when he did not look at it directly, something that existed just before attention, just outside certainty

Raven stopped, he did not turn, he only focused, and slowly… carefully… without moving his head, he shifted his eyes

Nothing

Only trees… only darkness

But the feeling remained

It came closer… subtly… patiently

Then—

It was gone

As if it had never existed

He blinked once

And when his eyes opened, the world had shifted

Not completely… but enough

The trees were no longer in the same places, not exactly, the shadows were longer… heavier… as if the light itself had changed

He stepped back

The ground made no sound

No leaves… no movement… no response

Only stillness… unnatural stillness

Then he heard it

Not from outside

From within

"You… have seen"

Raven froze, the voice was not singular, it was layered, overlapping, repeating itself from different directions inside his mind, not loud, but impossible to ignore

He closed his eyes for a moment… just a moment

Then opened them

The forest returned

But not entirely

He lowered his gaze slowly

The ground… shifted

Not physically… but in perception

The carved lines he had seen before were no longer still, they were moving… slowly… subtly… rewriting themselves

He took a deeper breath

Then spoke, quietly… uncertain

"I… did not understand"

Silence

A pause

Then something broke

Not sound… but sensation

As if something had laughed… quietly… deeply

Not human… not close… something older… heavier… nearer than it should be

"You are not meant… to understand"

The words were clearer now

But they offered nothing

No comfort… no guidance

Only warning

Or truth

And suddenly—

All sound disappeared

Even the wind… gone

Even his breathing… gone

Nothing remained

Then they appeared

Not in front of him

Not behind him

But between things

Cracks

Small at first… thin… fragile

In the air itself

As if reality had begun to fracture… slowly… quietly

And from within those cracks—

Darkness

Not ordinary darkness

Something deeper… denser… aware

Watching

Raven's eyes widened

This was not illusion

This was happening

He raised his hand slowly… cautiously

Not to touch… but to confirm

And before his fingers reached—

One of the cracks opened wider

For a moment… a very small moment

And he saw

Not a shape

Not a being

But something that should not be seen

He pulled his hand back instantly

His body trembled… uncontrollably

His heart pounded… violently

But it was not only fear

Something inside him… recognized it

And that was worse

"Stop"

The voice came again

Closer… too close

As if it existed behind his eyes… inside his thoughts

He froze completely

"Do not look… again"

Silence returned

The cracks disappeared… one by one

The air returned

The forest breathed again

But reality… did not heal

Raven remained standing

Still… quiet… aware

Breathing slowly… carefully

Trying to understand

But he could not

And in that moment… something became clear

This was no longer a test

No longer a path

No longer even a hidden world

Something had begun to open

Something that should not open

And yet…

He had opened it

He slowly lifted his head

He looked into the forest

But this time—

He did not see only the trees

He saw the space between them

And the space…

Was looking back
