Chapter 29 - Chapter 28: The South Zone Trophy

The victory over Mumbai U-16 had sent ripples throughout the state. Karnataka had not only beaten a fierce rival, but Rudra Sharma had showcased his uncanny ability to turn the tide of any game with his masterful tactics and skill.

Now, the team was preparing for the South Zone U-16 Tournament, which would pit them against the best from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and, of course, the defending champions, Tamil Nadu U-16.

...

The team was gathering at Karnataka's training ground on the outskirts of Chinnaswamy Stadium, the place that had become their second home. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows over the field. The mood was electric. Players ran through their drills, sweating under the pressure of what was to come. But there was an underlying sense of purpose in the air. The victory against Mumbai had bonded the team together.

...

Raghav Kothari (captain):

"Alright, lads, this is the one that counts. We've proven ourselves in the local circuit, but this... this is our moment. No more underdogs, no more surprises. We make our own destiny now. Let's show the South what we're made of!"

...

The crowd's buzz grew louder as the tournament kicked off, and Karnataka's first match was against Kerala U-16. The atmosphere was electric, with fans pouring into the stadium. They were ready to watch Rudra perform again.

...

Action Anand (Commentary):

"Welcome, folks, to the much-anticipated South Zone U-16 Tournament! Karnataka, fresh off their victory against Mumbai, are looking to extend their winning streak. And what a team they've got this year! Rudra Sharma, the prodigy, is ready to take the South by storm!"

...

Dr. V.V. Subramanium (Commentary):

"Rudra Sharma... a name that is making waves in the cricketing world. The precision in his batting, the analytical mind, and now his bowling prowess... Karnataka has a future star in the making. But can the team handle the pressure? That's the real question."

...

The match began with Karnataka winning the toss and electing to bat first. Rudra walked out to bat at No. 4, the crowd roaring as they saw him take his stance. His form had evolved since the start of the year, and now, his technique was near flawless.

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"Yeh hai Rudra Sharma! Team ka future, abhi present mein! Aaj ka game, toh bas ek aur step hai is ladke ki legend banne ki raah mein."

(Here is Rudra Sharma! The future of the team, already in the present! Today's game is just another step in this boy's path to becoming a legend.)

...

Rudra was ready. The Kerala bowlers had shown promise in their previous matches, but Rudra had faced much tougher challenges already. The moment he took strike, it was clear: he wasn't just here to play; he was here to dominate.

...

The first ball from Kerala's Benny Thomas was full, but Rudra stepped back, letting it pass. The next ball was a good-length delivery, and with a flourish, Rudra leaned forward and drove the ball effortlessly through the covers for four. The crowd went wild.

...

Action Anand (Commentary):

"Boom! Four runs off the first real delivery. And Rudra Sharma shows once again why he's considered the future of Karnataka cricket. Elegant and powerful in equal measure!"

...

Rudra didn't slow down. As the bowlers tried to adjust to his style, he kept them on edge, waiting for any sign of weakness. But the first breakthrough came at 28 runs when he played an expansive shot, looking for another boundary. The ball cut off the outside edge and was taken by the wicketkeeper.

Karnataka was 132/4. The stage was set for Rudra to showcase his skills as a bowler now.

...

Raghav Kothari (Captain):

"Rudra, it's your time again."

...

Rudra nodded. He had already mentally mapped the field and set his strategy. Kerala's batsmen had been strong, but there were gaps in their game—especially against spin bowling. The conditions were just right. The ball was turning.

Rudra walked up to the bowler's mark. The game, once again, was in his hands.

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"And now, here comes Rudra Sharma! The man of the moment! Spin master, strategy genius! Let's see how he handles Kerala's batting lineup!"

...

He took his mark, released the ball, and it spun viciously, landing just outside off-stump. Krishna Menon, the Kerala opener, lunged forward, attempting to cut the ball. But the extra turn beat him, and the ball spun onto his stumps.

The wicket was clean.

Dr. V.V. Subramanium (Commentary):

"Incredible. A textbook delivery from Rudra Sharma. That turn was something special. This boy doesn't just play the game—he controls it."

Rudra walked back to his mark. He wasn't done yet. There were more wickets to come. His eyes narrowed as he assessed the next batsman, Ravindra Reddy, a solid left-hander. Rudra knew that left-handed batsmen often struggled with spin bowling when it turned sharply in. His plan was set.

...

The next ball was a flighted delivery, drifting in before it spun away sharply. Ravindra Reddy played a big drive, but the ball skidded off the surface and flew straight into Sandeep Kumar's hands at gully.

Two wickets in quick succession.

Action Anand (Commentary):

"That's it, folks! Two wickets in two balls! Rudra Sharma is playing chess, and Kerala is completely out of moves!"

By the time Rudra had finished his spell, Kerala U-16 were all out for just 151 runs, a complete collapse. Karnataka had won the match by 83 runs, with Rudra finishing with 3 wickets for 32 runs in his 7 overs.

...

As the players walked off the field, Rudra's contribution had once again been the difference-maker. The atmosphere in the Karnataka dressing room was jubilant, but Rudra knew that this was just the beginning. The road to the South Zone Trophy was still long.

Raghav Kothari (Captain):

"Well done, Rudra. You were exceptional. This win is because of you."

Rudra gave a small nod, his focus already shifting to the next match. The trophy was in sight, but his mind was elsewhere—on his next challenge. As the team celebrated, he couldn't shake the feeling that something bigger was coming.
