Cherreads

Chapter 40 - May I call you that?(1)

Creeeek!

The stool's cushion and frame creeked slightly as Vanessa slowly sat herself down.

She exhaled a breathe of finalisation as she set her purse down besides to her left on the tiled ground of Alex's hospital room.

The light that shone in this room lit with an even pale yellow glow that emanated the strengths the origin of white light that came from the bulb emmited.

Vanessa sat not far from Alex's bed where he lumbered as his broken body dreadfully healed as he effortlessly dreamed in his sleep.

But about what? His family? His friends? Or how to get out of where he was as fast as possible?

No knew this. Well, no one except Banessa at least who smiled gently yet genuinely at Alex with hint of desperation and gladness in her eyes. But it wasn't for Alex. No, for it was person whose name she'd long been dreading and dreaming over since they met. Or maybe before that. That person who meant so much to her whole was Cronix.

The man we all know by name but not by personality or true identity or status even.

This man whose name had left the mouth of even an unknown entity like Omek whose origin and identity were far from comprehensible by the common folk let alone even Vanessa.

Whose appearance in this story far more vague than his friends' in his whole life.

Cronix....

"Haaah."

The name made Vanessa's heart pump with a heavy tremble to it and yet sooth her mind with a greater calmness than even a mother's coaxing voice ever could. Like a lullaby to child so was Cronix's name to her mind. A lullaby that made her rest in the dread stormy mess that occurred right where she stood.

The light bulb flickered twice. And Vanessa snapped out of a momentary daze. What could she have been thinking about? Oh well, time will tell but if we had to guess who...

"Hwaaaah." Vanessa yawns.

It would most undoubtedly be him. Cronix.

As she then slowly rested and folded her arms into a pillow and rested her head facing the direction to which Alex's paled face slumbered.

She looked at him with an odd comfort that made her mind drift further and further away. To where though? Well, to a place where the common folk in this world drift off to to either escape the torment of reality or enter into the deeper parts of it. A dream.

Her vision faded for a while until her eyes fluttered shut and all she could see was the bitter darkness that served as an entry into an even more mysterious world.

When she opened her eyes not long after she was somewhere byt couldn't grab hold of where she lain.

The place was dark. With a sky that stretched endlessly with a deep midnight hue that was tinted off with tiny sparkles that made it look more lively than the night sky of her world. Of earth.

She wanted to look round but her body or what felt like it refused to obey her mental command and coordination.

She wondered how she had gotten here but at least remembered who she was and what everything felt like at least.

Her breathes shallow and laced as if she was dying slowly which suffocating to her and also very abstruse although with all though she couldn't be more confused as even her own actions weren't made of her own unconscious will. All she could do was see and feel.

But not long after she felt the sting of the cold creep up her skin and into her blood and flesh as she then horrifically realised something. She was definitely within the dreamscape. But she was also within a dream within that conscious dream that mirrored a glimpse of her past there that she just quite couldn't properly grasp memory of.

She then felt her gaze slight as her eyes lids blinked rapidly in response to the resistance against against the ever freezing cold that surrounded her. Her body shivered and so did her jaw as she had no true control over her bodily reactions to her environment in this state she was in.

She wanted to move or at least find where to find the slightest bit of warm in this deathly cold place. But as time went on she would no more than watch, feel and think helplessly as death approached her with silently.

Suddenly her head snapped to fight and left and all she could was.

"Ahhhh!"

Dead bodies. Of children and men no less than she could have recognised them to be. Her scream was not of her own but of this body's that her consciousness had unknowingly crept into.

Right after she stood up and tumbled around as she struggled to hold of her feet and legs so she could gain balance and at least be able to escape this horror, but unfortunately.

Thud, "Oof!"

She could not. For her response was just a tad too late and the blood in her legs had already frozen so much so that the sensory neurons within her legs her died out along with her hope of ever serving in a place like this.

"Hah... hah... hah.... wh-why?" She muttered to herself her body slumped against the steel wall of what was once a train that had reduced to nothing more but a ruined cemetery for these innocent dreamers.

"Why did it have to end up like this....", she said as she then bir her bit but with barely any strength to cause it harm but rather at least keep in and suck on. But why?

Well, judging the look on her face it could be because she dud not want to let out any noises that could attract nearby beasts of the sort nonetheless to say that one could have the reason or source of this entire mess.

And two, she just simply...

"I'm cold. Im hurt. I'm hungry.... so so so so hungry....", she whimpered as quite whimpers escaped her mouth and nose. As her eyes and throat burned, giving her the satisfaction of the little warmth she had so desperately tried to escape to before finally found her in a truly hopeless moment.

She wanted to cry, to rage and hide. Away from this place. To her parents about the horrors she had faced. About how cruel life without loved ones is such a nightmare. But alas, for there was no point i doing such feeble actions at this moment.

Shhhh, thud!

When death gave her a call. Her vision blurred. Her breathes thinned as the tears from her eyes stung with a searing cold as they froze in place.

She no longer had a hope. To live. To care. To worry. To hunger like she did so much before. No. She was... free. Soon at least. And as her consciousness faded with her body now rested on the ground that whispered death into very being louder and louder.

Stomp!

She heard a faint distinct noise through the deathly hum of the furiously cold winds of this terrain. And her eyes slowly closed shut her intruding consciousness suddenly tempered something.

'Ahhh, he he. Now I remember when this was.'

She thought as the approaching stomps grew closer and louder until they grew into a numerous number of them signaling that this was just just a singular party a whole one. And for what the had arrived to do the dying girl.

'This is when....'

Only the dreamers knew what the didn't didn't.

'When I met... him.'
