Esme's POV
Then I left the room to handle the ones that had been watching me outside. I turned to the forest where they hid.
"You are not above the law."
Unlike Sanya's usual judgmental tone, this one sounded like she pushed me on.
Even without her support, I always wanted to beat up rogues guilt-free after what Uncle suffered.
"But you are not constrained by it either."
I quietly closed the door to avoid waking him. I hadn't even asked his name yet.
I locked eyes with them. I wasn't expecting three of them to walk out from the forest, claws out and snarling. They were brutish low-lives, but as Sanya said, capable of emotions.
Hence they'd feel pain too.
"By law, rogues aren't supposed to be within nobles' regions," I told them. "Whether the excuse is to kill another rogue or not."
One of them flexed his claws. His hair was a curly bird's nest filled with twigs and mud. If he came closer, he'd have reeked of dung.
