Chapter 176 - War -> Ashes and Agony

Realizing her elemental arcana was useless against him, the Chaos Lich halted her barrage and barked a guttural command, signaling the gargantuan centipede-lich to crush the fearless warrior under her towering weight and thrashing legs.

With the red-skinned elf occupied by the juggernaut, the Chaos Lich pivoted her focus toward the female elf standing beside him. She unleashed a relentless stream of flaming orbs, driving the warrior into a frantic dance of survival.

The elf moved with incredible grace, deflecting the heat with her enchanted blade, vaulting over low blasts, and twisting through narrow gaps in the inferno to keep the flames from touching her skin.

Yet in the chaos of battle, exhaustion took its toll. A split-second miscalculation during a high-speed dodge left her foot catching on a piece of churned earth. The slight stumble was all the Chaos Lich needed—a stray ball of fire clipped her flank, instantly igniting her armor and engulfing the female warrior in a roaring column of flame.

The female elf sprinted in a desperate zigzag, weaving erratically across the scarred battleground in a frantic bid to find cover from the Chaos Lich's relentless barrage. Though the spellcaster missed several deadly shots—fireballs that detonated with enough force to have instantly ash-reduced her flesh—enough stray blasts clipped the warrior to leave her in a truly gruesome state.

Smoldering armor melted into charred skin, and her agonizing burns left her looking less like a proud defender and more like someone barely surviving an execution.

With a final, pain-wracked leap, she collapsed behind the jagged bulk of an especially large boulder.

The towering stone provided a temporary shield against the searing winds of chaos magic. Huddled in the dirt, her chest heaving as choked sobs tore from her throat, she frantically patted out the lingering embers clinging to her clothing, desperate to quell the flames before pulling out what few supplies she had to patch her agonizing wounds.

Yet behind the rock, time was her worst enemy. As the heavy thuds of the giant centipede echoed nearby and the guided fireball still pursued her companion, she knew the stone would only buy her seconds before the Chaos Lich swept around her sanctuary to finish the job.

Instead of pursuing the female elf behind the stone, the Chaos Lich pivoted her strategy. She reasoned that once the two male warriors were erased, any remaining elves cowering in hiding would offer no meaningful resistance.

Her gaze locked onto the red-skinned elf, whose crimson hide was so violently marked with dark, swollen striations that he appeared bruised and battered from head to toe.

Coincidentally, that precise moment marked the end of the seated Lich's spellwork. The air shattered with a sickening tear as the sorcerer's summoning ritual reached its climax, unveiling the towering horror she had ripped from the nether realms. Assessing the ghastly entity now standing guard, the Chaos Lich instantly knew it possessed more than enough brute force to crush the nimble dark elf on its own.

Without hesitation, the Chaos Lich severed the mental link maintaining the guided fireball. The relentless orb chasing the swift warrior sputtered and dissolved into harmless embers, freeing her attention completely.

Directing her full, unbridled ire toward the red-skinned dark elf, she raised both hands as white-hot plasma crackled around her fingertips, eager to see if his strange immunity could withstand the full force of a concentrated chaos storm.

Huddled beneath a jagged overhang of cold granite, Willow's chest rose and fell in silent, shuddering breaths. Guilt gnawed at her insides, sharp and relentless. She had never intended to abandon her adopted family to face such overwhelming monstrosities alone.

Yet the moment those three skeletal Liches had descended upon the barren plateau, the sheer pressure of their presence had paralyzed her resolve. Combined with the lingering trauma of nearly losing her life to the relentless onslaught of the skeleton knight—where she had barely managed to feign indifference while staring into the face of enemies infinitely superior in skill and raw power—the terror had finally broken her.

Yielding to the instinct to survive, Willow had melted into the shadow of the sheer mountain crags.

In that moment of blind panic, she had convinced herself that the desolate peaks were a sanctuary—a remote, unforgiving highland where she could bury her head in the snow-dusted rocks and escape the bloody horrors of battle.

But as the distant roars of the giant centipede-lich echoed across the open stone plains and the bitter scent of scorched earth drifted up the mountain winds, the cold, grim truth settled over her heart.

There was no safe haven. The high plateau offered no immunity from the encroaching darkness, and running from the fight had simply swapped one immediate death for another, slower nightmare.

They had made a choice against their better judgment when they launched a raid on the soul beings' camp, driven by a desperate need for the life energy required to stabilize their deteriorating systems. It had been a brilliant run at first, but now the violent consequences of that gamble were crashing down around them.

Willow knew the bitter reality: her hiding place among the mountain crags was a temporary shield at best. Staying put was suicide, yet in the blinding panic of the ambush, retreating into the shadows had felt like her only choice.

Now, watching from behind the granite ledge, her heart sank. The Chaos Lich was unleashing a relentless barrage of wild arcana upon the three exiles, who fought with a desperate, stubborn bravery. A wave of suffocating despair gripped Willow's chest as her eyes locked onto Sheila.

Sheila had been fighting valiantly, twisting through the fireballs and parrying thermal blasts with terrifying precision. But under the sheer volume of the chaos magic, fatigue forced a split-second miscalculation. One wrong step on the loose gravel, and the flames caught her.

Willow's blood ran cold as she watched Sheila get swallowed in a column of fire, barely escaping behind a massive boulder, scorched and severely wounded.

Watching Sheila bleed and burn in isolation shattered whatever illusion of safety Willow had left.

The realization hit her with crushing weight: staying hidden while her kin were torn apart wasn't survival—it was just waiting her turn. The despair only surged higher when Willow caught a clear glimpse of Sheila's state behind the stone ledge. Sheila's skin was a gruesome canvas of blackened tissue, raw blisters, and deep, open wounds where her armor had fused with her flesh. The sickening smell of cooked meat and scorched cloth hung heavy in the mountain air.

That horrifying sight paralyzed Willow. A heavy wave of hesitation locked her knees, forcing her to shrink back into the shadows as fireballs detonate into the crags overhead.
