Chapter 116 - Episode 114: A Place to Stop, Not to Stay

They stopped where the trail widened into a small clearing.

Not open enough to be called a break point officially—just a natural pause where the ground flattened, a fallen log resting to one side, a few rocks scattered unevenly like seats no one arranged.

"Break," the teacher called from ahead. "Five minutes."

That was enough.

Kai dropped his bag immediately. "I'm not moving," he declared, collapsing onto the log like he had reached the end of his life.

"You said that ten minutes ago," Rui pointed out, sitting beside him.

"And I meant it then too."

Dev leaned against a tree, shaking his head. "You're dramatic."

"I'm realistic."

Chen set his bag down more carefully.

Wei remained standing for a moment. Then moved a little aside—just enough to lean lightly against a tree. Not isolated. Not inside either. Just—between.

Jian stayed closer this time. Not hovering. Not obvious. But he didn't drift away like before.

He took a seat on one of the rocks, just a step or two from where Wei stood. Close enough. That was already different.

Kai wiped his face with his sleeve. "If this is the easy part, I'm reporting the school."

"Report yourself first," Chen said calmly.

Kai looked up at him immediately. "Excuse me?"

"You signed up for this."

"I was misled."

"No one forced you."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"You assume too much."

"You talk too much."

Rui let out a short laugh. "Here we go again."

Dev crossed his arms. "Round two."

Kai pointed at Chen. "You've had an attitude since morning."

Chen replied without missing a beat, "You've had a personality since birth. That's worse."

Dev choked on a laugh. Rui covered his mouth. "Okay—that was good."

Kai sat up straight. "Oh, so we're all against me now?"

"No," Rui said. "Just reality."

Kai turned to Dev. "You too?"

Dev shrugged. "I'm enjoying this."

"Unbelievable," Kai muttered.

Chen glanced at them once—then, almost casually— "You guys didn't sleep either, right?"

Kai blinked. "What?"

Chen's tone stayed even. "You look exhausted." A pause. Then, just slightly— "Or busy."

Kai's expression changed. "…what is that supposed to mean?"

Chen tilted his head faintly. "You know."

Rui snorted. Dev looked away, already smiling.

Kai groaned. "Oh my god."

"Relax," Chen said. "It's obvious."

"Nothing is obvious," Kai shot back quickly.

Chen raised an eyebrow. "…right," he said.

Wei's fingers tightened slightly against his sleeve. Not visibly. Just—there.

The words slipped back. He's with Yanyan, obviously.A quiet laugh. Of course he is.

His gaze lowered. Not fully. Just enough.

Rui leaned back. "So who actually didn't sleep?"

Dev added, "Yeah, let's hear it."

Kai pointed immediately. "Not me."

"Liar," Rui said.

"I'm serious!"

Chen didn't look at him. Instead—his gaze shifted toward Jian. "What about you?"

The question landed clean. Direct.

Jian didn't react right away. He leaned back slightly, resting his hands behind him on the rock.

Kai glanced at him. Then grinned. "Oh, he didn't sleep either," Kai said.

Jian shot him a look. "Shut up."

"No, seriously," Kai continued, ignoring him. "He had a whole thing last night."

Rui looked interested now. "What thing?"

Dev raised a brow. "Wait—what?"

Chen's gaze stayed on Jian. Calm. Waiting.

Kai leaned forward slightly, enjoying this far too much. "He broke up with Yanyan."

A pause. Then— "He said it's over."

Silence followed. Not heavy. Just unexpected.

Chen blinked once. "…is that true?"

Jian didn't look away. Didn't hesitate. "Yeah."

Simple. Clear. No performance.

Wei's head lifted. Not fully. But enough.

The words reached him before he could stop them. It's over.

Chen studied Jian for a second. Not judging. Not pushing. Just understanding something.

"Why?" he asked. Not sharp. Just honest.

Jian exhaled slowly. Didn't rush the answer. "Because it wasn't right," he said. A small pause. Then— "It wasn't real."

The words came steady. Not loud. Not defensive. Just—true.

Kai leaned back again. "Told you."

Rui shook his head. "Still didn't expect that."

Dev nodded slightly. "Yeah… same."

Chen's gaze shifted. Briefly—toward Wei. Then back. "…you ended it properly?" he asked.

Jian met his eyes. "I did."

Another pause. Then, quieter— "I should've done it earlier."

Chen held his gaze for a second longer. Then nodded once. "That's fair."

Something loosened. Not completely. But enough.

Kai stretched his arms. "Wow. Emotional morning. I wasn't prepared for this."

"You're never prepared for anything," Rui said.

"That's because life attacks me unexpectedly."

Chen said dryly, "Life isn't your problem."

Kai sat up again. "You are this close to getting pushed down this mountain."

Chen didn't even react. "You won't."

"Try me."

"You'll trip before you reach me."

Dev laughed again. Rui grabbed Kai's sleeve. "Sit down."

"I'm serious!"

"No, you're tired."

Kai resisted for half a second—then gave in. "…fine."

The teacher's voice called again from ahead. "Time to move!"

Groans followed. Of course.

Everyone stood. Bags lifted. The group shifted again.

But something—felt lighter. Not resolved. Not fixed. Just—less tight.

Chen adjusted his strap. Then, almost offhand— "You guys aren't that bad."

Kai blinked. "What?"

Chen shrugged. "For loud people."

Rui laughed. Dev smirked.

Kai stood there for a second—then— "Okay, that's it."

He lunged forward. Rui and Dev grabbed him immediately.

"Leave him!" "Not on a slope, idiot—"

Chen didn't move. Didn't flinch. Just watched. Unbothered.

Behind them—Jian let out a quiet laugh. Real this time. Unforced. It slipped out before he could stop it.

Wei stood beside him. Still. Silent.

But—not as far. Not as closed.

The sound reached him. That laugh. Light. Familiar.

Something—shifted. Very small. Very slow. But there.

Like warmth returning to something that had been cold for too long.

Wei didn't smile. Not yet.

But his chest—felt different. Less heavy. Less certain.

And for the first time in a long time—not completely guarded.

"Move!" Kai shouted from ahead. "I'm being attacked!"

"You started it!" Rui yelled back.

Dev just laughed. Chen walked on like nothing was happening.

Jian stepped forward. Wei followed. Not behind. Not far. Just—there.

Same path. Same group.

And this time—something between them didn't feel entirely broken anymore.
