Chapter 151 - Episode 148: The library

The school felt different after everyone left.

Quieter.

Larger.

As if the empty hallways belonged to another world entirely.

The sounds of students laughing and calling goodbye to one another had gradually faded until only distant footsteps remained somewhere far below.

Even those disappeared eventually.

Leaving behind silence.

Golden evening light spilled through the library windows, painting long shadows across rows of bookshelves.

Dust drifted lazily through the air.

The old ceiling fans turned slowly overhead.

Near the back corner of the library, Jian stood beside a shelf pretending to search for a book.

Pretending.

Because he had already forgotten what he came looking for.

A few shelves away, Wei was returning borrowed materials before study leave officially began.

The sight should have felt ordinary.

Instead, Jian's chest felt tight.

Ever since last night, everything had felt different.

The classroom.

The future.

Wei.

Especially Wei.

The memory of the empty classroom kept returning.

"Do you think we'll still meet after this?"

The question still hurt.

Because Jian still didn't know the answer.

A book slid softly back into place.

Wei looked over.

"Found what you're looking for?"

Jian blinked.

"Hm?"

Wei smiled faintly.

"The book."

Right.

The imaginary book.

Jian glanced at the random shelf beside him.

"...Not yet."

"I don't think you've looked at a single title."

Caught.

Again.

Wei's smile widened slightly.

Only slightly.

Yet Jian's heart reacted immediately.

Dangerous.

Everything about this felt dangerous now.

Because for the first time, Jian understood exactly why he couldn't stop looking.

Wei walked toward him, holding two books against his chest.

The late sunlight caught in his dark hair.

His expression remained calm.

Comfortably familiar.

And suddenly that made everything worse.

Because familiar things were the ones people lost.

The thought settled heavily inside Jian's chest.

Wei stopped beside him.

Close.

Not unusually close.

They had stood this close countless times before.

Shared desks.

Walked side by side.

Sat shoulder to shoulder on the bus.

Yet now Jian noticed everything.

The faint scent of old paper and sunlight.

The way Wei pushed his sleeves up absentmindedly.

The small mole near his lips.

His gaze lingered there for half a second too long.

Wei noticed.

Of course he did.

"What?"

Jian immediately looked away.

"Nothing."

"Liar."

The word carried no accusation.

Only quiet amusement.

Jian's pulse stumbled.

The library remained silent around them.

Outside the windows, the sky glowed orange.

The entire school seemed suspended in that strange space between afternoon and evening.

Between staying and leaving.

Between endings and whatever came next.

Wei set the books down on a nearby table.

"You've been strange all day."

Jian froze.

His throat felt dry suddenly.

"Have I?"

"A little."

Wei pulled out a chair and sat down.

The sunlight behind him made the edges of his figure glow softly.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It rarely was anymore.

Yet today it felt heavier.

As if too many things remained unsaid.

Jian sat down across from him.

The table between them wasn't large.

Just enough space for scattered books and resting hands.

Wei looked out the window briefly.

"Everyone seemed nervous today."

Jian nodded.

"Yeah."

"Even Kai."

A laugh escaped before Jian could stop it.

"That's how you know it's serious."

Wei smiled.

And there it was again.

The slight point of his teeth.

The tiny shift in his eyes.

The warmth that always appeared unexpectedly.

Jian stared.

Without realizing it.

Again.

The conversation faded.

The room faded.

The sunlight faded.

Everything narrowed strangely.

Until only Wei remained.

The curve of his smile.

The mole near his lips.

The way a loose strand of hair had fallen across his forehead.

Jian couldn't stop looking.

Didn't want to.

Weeks ago he would have looked away immediately.

Now something inside him simply felt tired.

Tired of pretending.

Tired of lying to himself.

Tired of acting as though these feelings didn't exist.

Wei noticed the silence.

His smile slowly disappeared.

Not because he was upset.

Because he became curious.

Concerned.

"Jian?"

The sound of his name felt unfair.

Soft.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

Jian looked up.

Their eyes met.

Neither looked away.

Seconds passed.

The air felt strangely still.

Wei tilted his head slightly.

A small movement.

Yet Jian followed it unconsciously.

Leaning forward.

Not intentionally.

Not with a plan.

Not with courage.

Just... drawn closer.

Little by little.

As if some invisible thread had been pulling him for months.

The distance between them shrank.

Wei didn't move.

His expression remained unreadable.

Calm.

Steady.

Watching.

Jian's heart pounded loudly enough to drown out every other sound in the room.

He could see everything now.

The mole near Wei's lips.

The faint rise and fall of his breathing.

The way sunlight touched his face.

Too close.

Much too close.

Yet somehow Jian didn't stop.

Not immediately.

Not until—

"What are you trying to do?"

The question landed softly between them.

No anger.

No shock.

No teasing.

Just curiosity.

Genuine curiosity.

Jian froze.

Completely.

As if waking from a dream.

His eyes widened.

And suddenly he realized exactly how little distance remained between them.

An inch.

Maybe less.

His gaze dropped.

Wei's lips.

Close enough to touch.

The realization hit all at once.

Heat rushed through him instantly.

His heartbeat became unbearable.

What was he doing?

What had he almost done?

Jian pulled back so quickly his chair scraped softly against the floor.

The sound echoed through the quiet library.

For a second neither spoke.

Neither moved.

Wei remained exactly where he was.

Still calm.

Still watching.

Jian couldn't breathe properly.

Couldn't think properly.

Couldn't even look at him.

"Sorry."

The word came out barely above a whisper.

Embarrassed.

Honest.

Painfully honest.

Wei's expression softened.

Yet before either of them could say anything else—

"HEY!"

Kai's voice exploded through the library entrance.

Both of them flinched.

"WHERE ARE YOU TWO HIDING?"

The silence shattered instantly.

Footsteps echoed somewhere beyond the shelves.

Then Rui's voice followed.

"We've been looking everywhere."

"You're the one who lost them."

"I didn't lose them!"

"You absolutely lost them."

Dev laughed somewhere behind them.

Chen told everyone to be quiet because they were inside a library.

Nobody listened.

The familiar chaos approached rapidly.

Jian had never been more grateful for Kai's timing.

Or more frustrated by it.

Wei looked toward the entrance.

Then back at Jian.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

The unfinished conversation lingered between them.

Along with the unfinished distance.

Then Kai appeared between the shelves dramatically.

"There you are!"

His gaze bounced between them.

Suspicious immediately.

"Why do both of you look weird?"

Rui smacked the back of his head.

"Because you're yelling."

"Oh."

Kai considered that.

"Fair."

The moment disappeared completely after that.

Yet as Jian stood and gathered his books, his pulse still hadn't returned to normal.

Because one terrifying thought remained.

If Wei hadn't spoken—

If Kai hadn't interrupted—

Jian wasn't sure he would have stopped.

And that realization followed him all the way out of the library and into the fading evening light.
