Chapter 97 - Chapter 96 – What Kael Doesn't Say

The evening had started with wiring.

Not because anything needed fixing urgently. Site B's electrical system was functional, Cass had seen to that. But Kael had come back from an afternoon of Davan research feeling like something in him was running too fast for the container it lived in, and the only thing that had ever helped that feeling was having his hands in something real.

So: wiring.

The junction on the north wall had been bothering him since the first day. Not broken. Imprecise. The kind of splice that worked until it didn't, held together by someone else's expedient decision made in a hurry years ago.

He'd been meaning to do it properly.

Tonight felt like the night.

The others had drifted out over the course of the evening, the same organic dispersal that happened when people who lived and worked in close quarters needed air without needing to say they needed air. Nia and Tal, Suri, Rell upstairs to his mother, Mara long gone back to her side of the city.
