Chapter 197 - Deals and Consequences

The day belonged to Jax.

From the moment they stepped into the city, it became clear—this wasn't a visit.

It was a campaign.

A Merchant King at Work

Jax walked into every shop.

Not some.

Not the important ones.

All of them.

He asked simple questions.

"How long have you been open?"

"What keeps you in business?"

"What's your biggest problem right now?"

At first, the shopkeepers were cautious.

By the end?

They were smiling.

He found opportunity everywhere.

A herbalist struggling with supply → interested in Jax's cultivated herbs

A butcher dealing with spoilage → fascinated by refrigeration

A warehouse owner losing profit → suddenly seeing expansion

And of course—

He bought a restaurant.

Just like that.

The group followed:

Jax

Lexi

Nyxian

Vel

Sera

Sera's husband had offered to join.

She shut it down immediately.

No explanation.

Nyxian's Shift

Nyxian stayed close.

Closer than usual.

Hand in arm.

At his side.

Always.

Everywhere.

Possessive.

Protective.

Territorial.

Lexi noticed.

So did Vel.

So did Sera.

But Vel and Sera weren't watching Nyxian.

They were watching Jax.

The Weight of Power

They saw it quickly.

Jax didn't just do business.

He controlled it.

A negotiation involving one hundred thousand gold passed through his hands as casually as a street purchase.

No stress.

No hesitation.

He was:

Polished when needed

Relentless when challenged

Relaxed when advantage was his

At one shop, after closing a deal, he turned as they exited.

"Some think a negotiation is won when you hold all the cards," he said lightly.

A glance back at the shopkeeper, now smiling behind them.

"I think it's a win when both sides walk away better than they came in."

Vel memorized that.

Every word.

Every movement.

Because unlike her husband…

Jax didn't force control.

He created it.

And people followed willingly.

By the time they finished, it didn't matter whether he made a deal or not.

Every shop they left…

Was happier than when they entered.

That was his real power.

Dinner – The Collision

That night, everyone gathered.

The Vixens.

Vel.

Her husband.

Sera.

Her husband.

Vel's husband sat tall.

Or at least…

He tried to.

An incubus by nature.

A businessman by claim.

But compared to Jax?

He felt…

Small.

He watched Jax closely.

The way Vel had earlier.

But with something different behind his eyes.

Evaluation.

And discomfort.

Because where Jax was smooth…

He was abrasive.

Where Jax built connections…

He pushed for advantage.

And tonight, it showed.

Jax's Offering

Jax had prepared something.

Quietly.

Since the day before.

Dragon steak.

Cooked low and slow.

Infused with butter and herbs.

Finished with a perfect sear.

When it was served, the room went quiet.

Jax stepped forward—not as a host.

But as a guest offering something of value.

Before the meal began…

He presented two gifts.

Gift for Velmora Nightveil

AMidnight Heartstone Pendant.

A deep violet gem that pulsed faintly with energy

Enhanced emotional resonance and influence

Strengthened charm-based magic

Elegant.

Powerful.

Subtle.

Vel's fingers lingered on it longer than expected.

Gift for Vel's Husband

A Soulbound Ledger Ring.

A sleek obsidian band with engraved runes

Allowed tracking of agreements and promises

Prevented manipulation in contracts

A tool of control.

Precision.

Power.

He was impressed.

Even if he tried not to show it.

The Meal

The food was incredible.

No one denied it.

For a moment…

Everything felt normal.

Until—

Bunny spoke.

"Is your mom and sister still doing the ritual with Jax tonight…"

A pause.

"…or do we get him back after?"

Her voice carried.

Perfect timing.

Worst timing.

The room froze.

Eyes shifted.

To Vel.

To Sera.

Vel's husband looked at her.

Finally.

"Are you going through with this?"

Sera's husband asked quietly—

"Are you participating?"

He already knew the answer.

Nyxian didn't speak.

Didn't move.

Didn't blink.

She was listening.

Vel answered first.

"I will fulfill the ritual."

Her voice was calm.

Cold.

Certain.

"It is my duty."

Her husband stood abruptly.

Picked up the ring.

Said nothing.

And walked away.

Vel didn't look at him.

"Find somewhere else to sleep tonight," she said flatly. "Our room will be occupied."

He paused.

Just slightly.

Then kept walking.

Sera watched.

Then spoke.

"I will participate as well."

A glance at her husband.

"I expect you to accept that."

He nodded.

Slowly.

Painfully.

But he accepted it.

Nyxian's Breaking Point

Nyxian stayed silent.

Still.

Listening.

She had hoped for something else.

She didn't get it.

Jax watched everything.

Including Nyxian's father leaving.

He didn't like it.

Not at all.

But Nyxian had told him.

This was inevitable.

The Shift in Tone

Dinner ended.

Tension lingered.

And somehow…

The Vixens weren't upset.

They were amused.

Pixelle started a bet.

Whispers.

Laughter.

Numbers being thrown around.

Jax blinked.

Confused.

Concerned.

Nyxian didn't laugh.

Before the Ritual

Jax stepped closer to her.

Quietly.

"We can stop this," he said. "Leave. Get married in Solmere. Anywhere you want."

A pause.

"Or not at all. I already consider you mine."

Nyxian hesitated.

Thinking.

Weighing.

Then she looked up.

Fierce.

Focused.

"Don't fall in love."

A beat.

"But make them fall in love with you."

Her eyes shifted.

To Vel.

To Sera.

Jax nodded.

The Walk

Jax stood.

Extended his hands.

Vel took one.

Sera took the other.

They rose.

Sera paused beside her husband.

Jax passed him.

Met his eyes briefly.

No words needed.

Then they walked.

Down the hall.

To the master chamber.

The door closed behind them.

The Night

The mansion fell quiet.

For a time.

Long enough…

For doubt to creep in.

Then—

It began.

The Vixens retreated.

Not to listen.

But to surround Nyxian.

To support her.

And that night—

For all the chaos around her—

Nyxian wasn't alone.

Outcome

By morning…

Everything would be different.

Jax didn't just pass the ritual.

He changed the balance.

Of the Nightveil family itself.

And there would be consequences.
